Super sweet and understanding prof. Lectures are interesting and easy to follow, but expect to take notes the entire class time. Graded on in-class essay for the midterm and cumulative final, as well as 8 total short responses. Learned so much about American history that helped shape my overall perspective.
Dr. Case is my favorite professor I've ever had. She is so knowledgeable and will always give you her time. I have had the privilege of taking multiple classes with her and she has truly helped shape my time at UCSB into something amazing. If you have the chance, take her classes, you won't regret it.
We wrote 10 papers, had two quizzes, a midterm and a final. She is REALLY tough on grading the papers but is generous for the quizzes. The midterm was a pain since there was little time and the prompts asked about SPECIFIC people. She does NOT post lectures on GS; they slides wouldn't help anyhow. BUT the material is very interesting.
Professor Case is AMAZING!! This isn't an easy class if you're looking for that but it is seriously great. She makes it really easy to participate in class and super comfortable at office hours. There is lot's of reading but it was all really interesting. I think anyone who is interested in the material and studies will do really well.
SUCH A TOUGH GRADER. I tend to receive A's on my papers in all other classes and in this class the highest I got was a B- and that was after I had spent weeks writing it (outline & all) and proofreading it with others. She expects students to already know America's history so she teaches the course without explaining much and tests are really hard.
Very hard grader, even if you do the reading and attend lecture
Turned out to be really interesting. Her lectures are easy to follow and well organised and I felt comfortable participating in class. 2 papers, 1 midterm and a final. She was very knowledgeable and the readings were actually really interesting even though there was a lot. I really enjoyed this class!
Professor Case is a really great teacher. She knows a lot and cares about her students. I was sometimes confused during class but she always helped me to improve. And I really improved during the semester. I took the feminist class and I was not disappointed about the material. I learnt a lot. Don't hesitate to go and see her to her office!!
She is nice but her lecturing is very boring and she is awkward. I wish she has info on her slides. If she didn't give us a study guide I would not have done well.
One of the most brilliant professors I have had at UCSB. She lectures with minimal notes, and is very clearly passionate about what she teaches (but be prepared to take a lot of notes, i recommend using a computer so you can type). The material is very engaging, and would recommend any class taught by Professor Case.
She was alright, not my type of professor. She gives us essays on the tests but we have no idea what it's going to be on. Her powerpoint presentations have no information so you have to listen to her, which is hard to do. The amount of terms we have to study for is a bit. If you know nothing on feminism and are not interested really, do not take!
Professor Case was really nice and the class material was interesting, covering a lot of antebellum-south, civil war, progressive era and into World War I. Also dealt heavily with issues of race relations in America. Since there's so much material the class and her lectures move pretty quick, but if you are dedicated it is very rewarding.
Case's biggest strength lies in her lectures - she is exceptionally clear and detailed, and it's clear that she's passionate about what she teaches. However, you can easily passdo well in this class without going to the lectures and simply going to sectiondoing the readings. A lot of reading.
Case's best quality is how clear she is. Lectures are to the point and concise, although there's a few boring ones in there. She's not hilarious, but she's not a snoozer. 1 essay which is pretty easy, midterm is fine if you prepare, final is long, but a B+ is very reasonable given basic prep.
She says, "umm" a lot. She does this thing that when she lectures she comes out from the podium and go right back as if shes scared of coming out. I realized that when she talks about certain subjects you can hear the passion in her voice. Everything she talks about in lecture is surely to be in the book. BE PREPARED TO WRITE FAST SHE SPEAKS FAST
Case talks at a moderate pace during lectures, so you won't be stressed out as you take notes; go to class and read the book and documents (check the syllabus; she never makes you read all the documents), and use her study guides if you want to do well. Participate in section. All the resources you need to do well are provided.
Didn't go to lectures, skimmed over the readings and midterm wasn't that bad. Midterm was bluebook, identifying terms and a short essay question. One essay and a final. Go to section, it helps.
Her power points were unhelpful (they were pictures without titles) and she was a tough grader, especially on papers. She assigned 3 different writing assignments over Thanksgiving break. She had incredibly high expectations and was mousy and quiet while lecturing. She made an incredibly interesting period of American History boring and rote.
Dr. Case is a pretty good teacher. But she doesn't really test on what she teaches, you are tested on what you read. She gives no guidelines for her exams everything is game and you read the entire text book! Overall she was ok. The topic was interesting and I like American history but the class could be better.
Case is very kind and considerate. Her lectures are clear and to the point. She's not the best speaker and answers q's in a timid manner. She knows her stuff though. Do the reading, listen to lecture, take notes. 2 papers, in-class midterm, 1 quiz and a final.
The best history professor I've had at UCSB (and that's hard to say!). Her civil rights class is so eye-opening and she is incredibly intelligent and kind. I was so excited to come to class twice a week. I learned so much, the readings were incredibly engaging, and her grading was very fair. My insight was always welcome and encouraged. great class
Super nice, and helpful. Her class isnt easy and she is reluctant to give out A's. Go to office hours and do your reading and you should be fine
She was an easy professor. She stumbled a lot during lecture, but the course was a breeze. No final, no midterm, what more can you ask for. Just show up and and do daily skims of reading and come up with easy questions, and you'll do good.
For a giant lecture, Case does pretty well. Interesting subject material and easily consumable lecture style that stays on target.
