Applebaum is amazing. so sad that his house burned down. definitely one of my favorite classes
appelbaum is an absolutely amazing teacher!! if you are going to take this class, make sure you take it with him. get a good ta and then tests are easy. there is a lot of reading but it is all interesting and worthwhile. the paper is an easy A if you put in the effort. great class!!
Amazing class! The subject material is very interesting and the professor is a good lecturer. He also posts the lectures online which are helpful for studying and if you don't get everything from class. Do ALL the readings to do well (basically the same for all Global classes). TA Jeff was great.
He's a great professor, but do not take him if you are bad at multiple choice tests; they aren't just hard, they are impossible. For this class, I recommend Juergensmeyer because he's just as informative and he's an easier grader.
This class made me change my major to global studies. The lectures are fascinating. I think I learned more from him in that one class than I did in my previous two years at UCSB. There is a lot of reading, and you should keep up because cramming is super stressful - I know this from experience. Take this class! Love this prof.
He's a great, energetic lecturer. I never once fell asleep in this class, and almost every lecture had me interested. The tests are pretty hard - you HAVE to read the books, but if you work hard he grades fair. I think I learned more from this class than I had in a year at UCSB.
He is awesome! He is very passionate about what he teaches, and the lectures are very interesting! The tests are MC anc can be a little tricky, but they aren't that bad.
Cool prof. easy and fun
My favorite professor to date. truly inspiring and thought-provoking lectures that will completely change your perspective on our world. an excellent and humorous lecturer. as for the tests, read your books and notes, and then read them over a few more times because his tests are difficult but very passable. Remarkable class and professor!

He bought us pizza, hell of a nice guy!
Will educate and inspire you. He's a remarkable man who will open your eyes to the world in a unique and compelling way.
Move to canada if you like this professor. He needs to learn that for a public school, this is not a liberal institution.
Appelbaum is the best professor so far after completing two quarters. He has a sense of humor, and his class is interesting. He's also very passionate about the subject and shows it. Tests were pretty hard, even doing all the readings and going to class. Take if you're interested
Way too biased - doesn't even attempt to achieve intellectual balance - and I'm a liberal!
Appelbaum is an awesome professor. By far the best I've had to date, but I'm only a sophomore. He is clear and his lectures are informative. He has a good sense of humor which makes his lectures that much better. However, the TA has a 10% influence on your grade, and I got screwed by that.....
Not an easy class to be sure, but it's awesome. Rich is great, helpful, and nice, and really passionate about his subject. Exams are hard if you don't read and take notes. I suggest the honors section because it rocked, though you end up 'forgetting' to do readings & some h. people are pompous jerks
Applebaum is awesome, yes he comes from a liberal perspective, holy**** he acknowledges that, if you can't listen to a differing view without complaining about bias you should probably go back to high school. Anyway his class is immensely interesting and I highly reccomend the honors section.
Class is intersting, tests are hard. If you're liberal, you'll love it, if you're not, you probably won't. Biased, but still fun. Readings are interesting, but the tests can be difficult. Nice guy though.
easy class, funny professor. can be a bit tedious at times but for the most part interesting. take global 2!!
Awsome guy... very passionate, intelligent, and humorous. Not the easiest class but he keeps your attention and interest...
Superficial, closed-minded prof who's far-left agenda is utterly transparent. This is 2004, not 1917, ok?!
First rate professor. He is passionate with an excellent sense of humor, knows what he is talking about(from experience),and is quite fair in his approach to controversal topics.Tests are fair and paper topics are interesting. He actually cares about student
Too much neo-Marxist sermonizing, not enough unbiased substance.
