This guy's lectures are him reading essays other people have written on the books he assigns. You can find them all online. His opinions are ridiculous, but are apparently the only right ones. Extremely boring and not worth it for the GE. However, get a good TA, draft your final and midterm essays before class and you'll get an A.
uses unnecessarily large words, pontificates if you will. shoves his view down your throat, even though his interpretation can be ridiculous. and has you read alot even for a literature class. to ace this class: buy online summaries instead of books, write down every page reference from lecture and discussion, and regurgate everything on the final.
Very insightful professor, lots of reading though. Very helpful and knowledgeable; the midterm is timed essays, the final is a paper. If you aren't a literature person, might not want to take this class as the lectures are based completely on the novels you read.
Professor lets the students do a lot of the talking. He seems to want the class to get to the point that he has in mind, it means we have to listen to a lot of random comments by the class before we get to the point. All in all, the class is pretty easy, just show up and write a few papers.
Very great class! Luved the reading Cuz it was very interesting! I recommend if u like to read and if u like writing papers...
Really cool class. I loved it. Even though there is a lot of reading I had fun reading the books. Section is mandatory every week, but it's not that bad because it usually interesting. I suggest this course if you're not taking a heavy load, otherwise it might be too much reading for you.
lots of reading. weekly quizzes in section, but not difficult if you read. some of the books are boring and some are better. not a very hard class. you can pretty much write anything as long as you have evidence to back up your thesis. he gives you options on the test, so you don't have to do all of the questions. take this class!
Very much a literature based class, so unless you're used to, or like, English/Lit-type classes, it can be a lot of work and confusing. However, he's very insightful and has really great ideas. Really knowledgeable about the historical background and his points really help in learning how to appreciate the books. Great prof!
I'm not a big fan of this guy. Lectures consist of nothing but reading his awkwardly written notes aloud. Seems to like to find the most convoluted way possible to make his point. His exam questions and exam instructions are very unclear, wordy. Your TA does all the grading, and my TA (M Kwon) was very clear about things, and very good in general.
Great class, and Jim is an excellent professor. A lot of reading, but the books are interesting. I enjoyed his teaching; it is more discussion than just plain lectures. He always invites the class to share and has a lot of interesting thoughts about the books. Highly recommend both the class and the professor.
Class is pretty easy and straight forward. You get to read some interesting novels, but can be much at times. Lecture is boring and uninteresting. Didn't really need to take notes. He basically recaps what is going on in the book and reads from his notes. Midterm and final is pretty simple. Nonetheless, a pretty insightful class.
he's nice. he's helpful. he's easy. and hey, he's cute.
This class was awful. Jim reads papers he's written about the books you read and it's boring as hell. Too much reading. The only good thing about this class is that section is 35% and the final (take home 5 page paper) is 45%.
the midterm and the final paper are easy. lectures lack a conversational tone. he relies on his notes too much. personally, he is really really really nice and helpful.
All Jim does, is read from his notes, every lecture. I hated my TA, she was discriminating an horrible. A lot of people did very poorly on their papers, Jim was very unclear in lecture, and put you too sleep every time. I do not recommend this class
lectures in a way which is really easy to follow, but rather hard to take notes too
Great class and great professor. Lots of reading, but I found most of them very interesting. He's very funny and brilliant, as his analysis on the the works of literature are very deep, detailed, and insightful. I highly, highly reccomend this class.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful.

He talks really fast, no lecture notes just sit there and listen to him talk. He can put you to sleep. A lot of books to read but interesting. Some authors of the books we read came to talk to us that was cool. midterm is in class essay and take home paper final. Sections are 35 percent of grade.
Jim is brillant, organized and a wonderful professor!!!!! He is always willing to help and makes class enjoyable!
I was bad and only went to a few lectures but i read every book word for word. I actually realllly liked the books he chose although the first two were kind of slow. Everything about this class is extremely fair and from what i saw, he is a really nice guy
clear and concise lectures, although he just reads from his own notes so it can be somewhat boring. midterm is an in-class essay/short answer questions which he gives you a week before, and the final is a take home essay. good course overall...five long books to read, but theyre interesting..
