One of the best teachers I have had at UCSB. "coaxes you to a higher level of thinking in a way that makes you think you did it yourself" ;). Helpful on a personal level and a fine addition to UCSB. If you want the feeling of a smaller school where professors actually care about YOU (the individual) take any class with Foran.
134RC : Best Class in the Sociology department! So incredibly interesting and if you do the reading and come to class once in a while (he plays a lot of really awesome films), its an easy class!
EXCELENT!TAKE HIM, AT FIRST I WAS SCARED BECAUSE THE CLASS HAD TWO FAT READERS BUT YOU CAN GET BY SKIMMING IT, HE IS SUCH AN AWESOME PROFESSOR EASY GRADER.

(130ME)such a good teacher, you had to read alot but didnt have to read it all in able to do well in the class.All you had were papers, no more than 6pgs, attendance was a must. He e-mails you all the lectures, very nice, VERY knowledgeable, has a dry sense of humor but it is hilarious! very passionate, wants his students 2 do well. Take his class
Very diverse and interesting readings. Class format is unconventional, not much lecturing for me to critique. The few remarks he makes are very thoughtful. He's someone I greatly respect and he shows respect for his students. Biased, but he at least is upfront about what his biases and politics are like. Made me want to study more about MidEast.
Professor John is the essence of what studying at a university should be. His classes are thought-provoking and interactive. His dry sense of humor may or may not be your style, but underneath the calm exterior is a passionate professor who really cares about his students- all of which he knows by name! I would definitely recommend Professor Foran.
Professor Foran is one of the best. He gets the class in lively discussions and he listens. Unlike a lot of professors he doesn't force his ideas on anyone.
Prof. Foran is a smart professor who is passionate about helping students learn. However he does have a monotonous voice so you might find his lectures somewhat boring. Way too much reading, but a good class if you are interested in the subject.

John was one of the best professors I have ever had. He was funny and engaging, and truly just wants his students to learn. He's not out to trick anyone, or to make life hard for you- he just wants you to get the most out of the course as possible. I had him for a methods course, which are innately bad, but he made it as fun as he could. A+++
He's a good professor, he taught a lot of good material. For those that say he sucked, it just shows the type of close-minded people you are. I definitely recommend his classes.
He is one of the most amazing professors you will ever take! He allows the student to engage in the material and learn for themselves win a vibrant way. You could tell he has passion for his work, for teaching and making the world a better place. Only the narrow-minded or/and the extremely ultra-republican could oppose his class. He is careful to respect everyones views no matter how ignorant, and teaches with respect and patience.

Foran is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's funny, thoughtful, reflective, and is one of those teachers who will coax you to higher levels of thinking but does it in a way that makes you think you did it on your own. If you want to learn a lot, take a class with John.
