Dr. Lichtenstein helps his students succeed by giving clear expectations and grading criteria for essays. Very labor studies focused
Nelson is a phenomenal instructor! He is passionate about the material and has many stories of his own experiences. He was very accommodating with the return to in-person and posted lecture recordings. Grade based on two papers, 1 final paper, and a quiz. Write thoughtfully and you'll succeed. Also, he enjoys chatting in office hours!
Nelson rocks! He is very knowledgeable, easy going, and a good lecture. He can ramble a bit but it's usually when he's sharing his own experiences that occurred during the events we're learning. Very straight forward. No surprises. Two in class multiple choice quizzes. 7-8 page research paper. 3 page final essay. Read and follow the material easy A
an A is doable if you put in effort! essays were a bit tuff but the final was fair. lectures were a bit boring at times but overall good class and I enjoyed learning
A very approachable professor! Loved his class. Quizzes are not bad and the research paper was interesting. Never was stressing about this course which was nice. He knows his stuff when it comes to the Civil Rights movement & Labor, would for sure take him for any history class
Lichtenstein is a fantastic professor and probably the best I've had at UCSB. He is highly respected in the academic community for labor studies. Attendance was not mandatory, but it was refreshing when I did attend. The readings are not challenging, if you're a good writer you will do well. Also he wrote a rec for me which was very cool of him.
He's very nice and helpful during office hours, but during lecture he rambles about labor and has difficulty talking about anything else. They drag on and on, but it's also very difficult to make the Great Depression "fun", so ragging on the guy isn't really fair. Two small papers, one long paper, and one relatively cut-and-dry final.
He was a really great professor overall. Personally I think his lectures can be interesting and he shows a lot of passion, it's more like a one sided conversation cuz he can go on interesting tangents. There are three papers but two of them are really short. He's a really nice and knowledgeable guy. He pretty much doesn't use gauchospace at all
He's definitely knowledgeable about labor and capital during the Great Depression, but he's prone to rambling during lectures. It feels like his comments on the powerpoint slides go through one ear and out the other. He's passionate but it's hard to pay attention in class a lot of the time. Really nice guy overall and always helpful office hours.
Easy class. It's only 2 essays and a final, but the only down side is lectures draaaaaaag on
Easy class, 3 papers. The books required are very cheap, some are just a few dollars. He truly cares for his student, always willing to help whenever you need. He passionate, funny, and easy going. Over all, a great class. Take him!
Only 3 papers for your entire grade and he was a relatively easy grader, but unless you're CRAZY interested for labor in the 19th century, the lectures are reeeeaaaaallyyy booooorrrinnggg
I loved this class! If your not interested in the material then dont take. BUT if u are interested in capitalism and the rise of labor unions LICHTENSTEIN IS THE ONE TO TAKE! He is an expert when it comes to labor history. The lecture is not mandatory but definitely helps 2 understand all of the extensive reading so go! Just 3 papers! No M or F!
Lectures are hard to follow but Prof is extremely helpful and willing to meet in office hours. Three papers constitute your final grade and prompts entail analytical analysis and response. He is very knowledgeable about this subject but lectures are boring.
If you already know everything there is to know about the topic, then, great, you might be able to make sense of this class. Assumes way too much prior knowledge of economic history for a class with no specific prerequisites. Grades harshly with unclear directions. Lectures are hardly ever on topic for long, and very unhelpful. Take ANYTHING ELSE.
Such a nice guy! The class is super easy, never need to go to lecture. Grade is based on 3 papers only, and they're on the books not lecture so you never need to go. He offers a lot of extra credit and also allows you to fix your papers for a better grade. Great guy, very nice and entertaining.
Such a nice guy. Very passionate about the labor movement, and def knows his stuff. I had absolutely no knowledge of it prior to taking the class, but I find myself looking forward to his lectures because he is just so damn endearing. i've gotten consistent B's on the papers so far after only having read two out of the four books. do recommend!
Fairly interesting material. Prof is a good lecturer & very helpful but the essay prompts are slightly difficult. Tough on grading the essays. No tests, just 3 essays.
Decent course, decent professor. Easy enough, i went to 4 of his classes and got a B+
I didn't know I had signed up for a labor class. It said history from 1930-1959, but it was all about unions. His lectures are jumbled and he is constantly out of order. Walter Reuther is his god, constantly dwelling on the book he wrote about the man. If you can sit through lectures and take notes and read, it's a breeze. Boring, but easy.
Enthusiastic lecturer who makes listening and taking notes a pleasure. Welcomes comments/input from students. Well organized lecture, 2 papers (moderately difficult, will do well if you FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS). Charming professor with thought provoking presentations. Not necessary to do all reading, but fun/helpful. Office hrs helpful!
Great!
I loved this class. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and very helpful when you go into office hours.
Silly me, I thought I signed up for a class about US 20th century history. All I got from him was Walter Reuther (just because wrote a book about him) and labor. I feel like I wasted my time in lecture, especially since he states that the lectures don't do anything for you and you need to read the book. Too much reading for one class.
