he is one of the nicest professors ive had! always willing to help, specially in office hours! his congress class was far the best class i have taken in college! there is a lot to know and may be time consuming but completely worth a while!!!
Terrible teacher. He never clearly explains how you're going to be graded. Also, he makes it seem like he really doesn't want to talk to you or help you. I would never take him again!
Smith is a great guy and his politics of the environment class was by far the most informative class I took at UCSB. He is merciless on reading assignments so watch out.
the class was so boring, completely focused on oil drilling off of coast. Prof stated many times that he didn't care about or take evaluations seriously because he is already tenured and he is only a prof to do research.
dont chat with him if he hasnt eaten his lunch...or he will be grumpy

He was an advisor for an internship I did. Great guy. Knows a ton about Environmental & American politics.
The most fun class you will ever take at UCSB. It is a lot of work, but well worth it.
Good lecturer, seems like an overall nice guy, term paper really sucked, boring topics for it. He is interesting but the 9am thing was hard to stay awake in, knows his stuff though and makes small jokes that are cute cause their not very funny.
great teacher, interesting lectures, term paper was a pain in the gludious maximus, overall easy class.
midterm and final pretty easy, 12 page research paper though...
The lectures were interesting, but at 9 am were pretty harsh. Smith is very clear and uses a vocabulary students can understand. Overall, I liked the class and professor a lot. The 15 page paper- also harsh, but grades are really fair.
his class was okay I HATED THAT TERM PAPER THOUGH!!! UGH!!! anyway final and midterm are pretty easy.
Solid lecturer...pretty easy-going guy. You will learn about our government. If you don't like writing 12-page research papers tho, don't take it.
Great professor. Very eloquent and clear. Tests weren't bad and the papers were graded fairly. I strongly recommend him to anyone.
It's a good class, the paper is pretty easy to get through if you are organized and start planning about a week or two in advance. I didn't do a lot of the readings after the midterm and still did pretty well in the class. Overall a good class, but sort of boring.

He's a great prof. He's very helpful. Notes are a major part of doing well in the class. You have to write a 12 piece paper, start early, and don't let this prevent you from taking this class.Interesting proffessor, and if you're taking this class in the morning get some sleep, it helps a lot.
He knows his stuff, def recommend this class.
a very good and interesting teacher. i really enjoyed his class and the lecture was full most of the time, so i'm assuming others did too. i'd definitely recommend this class.
Prof Smith may not have the most exciting sense of humor, but it's not too hard to sit through. Nice nap if nothing else. BUT he is extremely kind and helpful with whatever help you need and that is not something to over look
This guy doesn't know how to teach but knows everything about his subject.
