CAMPO J E
nice guy, but lectures were long and it was difficult to stay engaged. quizzes and exams were easy enough but lots of reading. would recommend looking elsewhere for a ge.
I took Modern Islamic Movements this spring. Professor Campo is clearly an expert in this field, and his academic clout is warranted. The material is difficult and there is a lot of it, but because the Professor writes Encyclopedias of Islam, he knows how to present the material clearly and concisely.
Pretty cool class concept, but a lot harder than it seems. All assignments were very straightforward, but the quizzes are horrible. Absolutely horrendous quizzes (class avg. was a C). The hardest part is memorizing middle eastern dishes and their importance/context in the course as well as the ingredients. Nice guy tho & does food lab with his wife
Seriously had to take this because there was nothing left. My 3.8 gpa dropped because of this class. Regret it completely. Got a C I would advise you if it’s not your major don’t take it don’t take him. He will give you a study guide but then put other questions and the final is BS
Professor Juan Campo is opinionated and dogmatic in his approach to teaching; he doesn't welcome alternative perspectives and ideas. The subjective portion of exams is harshly graded if you do not regurgitate his opinions. If you don't toe the line, your grade will suffer, and you will receive lower marks, so be warned.
Dr. Campo is such a nice person. He genuinely cares that you succeed in the course. While there were many interesting lectures, I do feel that some details were not very relevant or important and had too much time allocated to them. It might not be the most exciting course I have taken, but I do think that it was interesting/ and an easy A.
This class is a good for a low stress GE. There's a good amount of reading but if you keep up you should be fine. The midterm and final are easy enough and there's one 8 page paper. I'd recommend going to lecture.
I took 2 classes with Campo, 140C and 140D. He was good at conveying the information. The reading is the most tedious part
Prof Campo is a fantastic lecturer and very well versed in Islamic studies. His lectures are jam packed with info that you use for online posts and assignments. Readings are extensive but very interesting. He is very helpful as well. Texts needed are extensive and reading is mandatory.
Take him if you want a lot of reading that has nothing to do with preparing you for the final
Campo is a great professor. Had no prior knowledge about or interest in Islam, barely did any of the readings, and ended up with an A+. He's very friendly and approachable - talking to him at office hours will definitely help. Overall great class.
A LOT of Reading...wants you to do well and grades very easy. Multiple choice is hard on the exams, but other than that, his tests are not hard at all.
