STEWART J C
Unsure how to feel. Good for getting your GE credits done, and Jeff is a wonderful person. Its just the amount of work to a class like this is a bad ratio in my opinion - if you could P/NP I would not be giving it a 1. I just saw this as an overall waste of my time. If the lectures were not mandatory, this rating would be a 2.5 probably.
never ever ever ever doing a blst class again. steward is a kind and nice man. he adores his students and is very nice. however the class sucks, lectures are boring, ta was awful and acted more like the professor, and this just made me hate jazz and black studies. the only thing i learned was to avoid BLST, nothing about jazz lmao
AWFUL CLASS. Very activist heavy, get ready to stand against brainwashing. Our TA was very over the top and put a lot of stress on my fellow students and myself. If I had to go through another one of her sections I would just lose my mind. Just avoid the black studies department like it is the plague. Good prof though, he is a great man. TA is bad.
Honestly, this class has me at mixed emotions. On the one end of things, the prof is a great man. However, the class itself is highly boring and I feel like I could've missed lectures and still do a decent job. (lectures are mandatory, and are quite boring). TA was ok, but sections were just over the top for a class such as this.
i cant with this class. this was such an activism class that it hurt my brain, i am never taking a class from the BLST department again. ta was awful, she was so snoopy and just was such an activist over anything. a complete waste of my time, and i dreaded going to every. single. boring. lecture. awful, awful, awful, class.
Mandatory lectures which will solve any sleeping issues you have. Mandatory "coffeehouses", which are a waste of your time unless you like to be crammed in a tiny room with music blaring, hurting your ears. The TA this year was also bad, and I highly disliked her section. Overall, this class was a waste of time.
I dislike this class. The professor was chill, my TA was more of an activist than anything. She took the class very seriously and graded us very harshly. Tried too much for a stupid GE. The mandatory lectures is a pain as well and they are so stale everyone is sleeping. On top of that, we had our TA snooping at all of us. I really hated BLST 14.
I decided to take this class for summer credit & I was regretting it at first. However, Professor Stewarts lectures are entertaining and he only assigned us weekly blogs. They were roughly 600 words but completely doable. His final composed of 3 essays at roughly 1000 words. Besides this, I enjoyed this class & would recommend!!
Big essay for the final but overall a very interesting class. My favorite class for the online year.
This class is not an easy A or a throwaway GE, but the material is super engaging and the work is rewarding. The bulk of the grading is based on short writing assignments, a long take-home midterm essay, and a final group video project. Prof Stewart is quite accessible out of class and very receptive to student feedback. Definitely go to lecture!!
Prepare your hole for a 9000 word midterm exam. Lectures are also mandatory, which makes sense because no one would normally sit through something so stale. If you don't like it, you're sheet out of luck, this class can't be taken PNP..
If you are considering taking this class, I would recommend it because it is actually really cool but make sure you can handle the workload. There are 3-4 mandatory jazz performances, 4-5 blog posts (300 words each), a 10-15 pg midterm, final group project (video pres. & 8 pg paper), self/class evaluation, and 2 section presentations.
