Rambles in lecture; the wording is incredibly nuanced and complex. He expects you to have the complex material understood like the back of your hand. Material is interesting but that fact was defeated by his harsh grading. Made me dread the class and every assignment. I'd suggest avoiding this class if you can.
I like him he is funny. And the class is not hard and very clear and interesting. 5 stars! I am a history major now.
Professor Bouley lectures are entertaining, and very well detailed! He is always making sure that everyone in lecture understand and asking questions. I did not skip or miss any lectures which I can defintely say is the reason for my A in the class. If you're thinking about taking the class, do it!
Took history-9. Very well structure course, clear directions on every assignment. Amazing lecturer, and is funny and approachable. Helpful in-class and is very accessible via email or office hours
Bouley is clearly passionate about the material and does his best to make lectures interesting. Go in w/ reasonable expectations bc RMP had me thinking lectures would be absolutely captivating. Not always - it's still class. He's extremely accessible during Office Hours. Rlly sweet guy. TA was a harsh grader but made section fun.
He is passionate about what he teaches but his lectures don't make much sense and he kind of just rambles on without much explanation.
Lots of reading but also it is so interesting and the films chosen are so beautiful. he's very enigmatic and you can tell he cares alot about his classtopics
The readings were long but some of them were really interesting, and the fact that you only have to do six of them allows you to pick and choose in advance. Best history lecturer I've ever had, I'd literally spend the lecture before his thinking "I've just got to get through this and then I've got bouley". My section wasn't great but YMMV
Lectures are pretty interesting but you HAVE to go. Attendance only taken in section, but he lectures with few words on the slides so if you're gone you'll be lost. Super funny guy though. TAs vary but most are good. You read maybe
The best professor I've ever had. He'll make you love topics you thought would be extremely boring. Amazing lecturer, extremely engaging and funny. There's a good amount of reading but he tries to use primary sources that are intriguing and narrative. Genuinely cares about his students and what he teaches. Very approachable.
Closest you can get to Harvard at UCSB.
My experience in Professor Bouley's online summer course 121A was fun and intuitive. His lectures were pre-recorded and there were basically two major assignments, as well as weekly responses which were only about a page. It is definitely worthwhile to have good communication with your TA, made my session smooth as my TA was supportive
Lecture is good, but unclear grading criteria.
It is all depend on TA grading. grading criteria is unclear.
Overall pretty easy class. Lectures were super interesting because of Bouley. Quizzes were weekly straightforward but really relied on lecture. The assignments weekly were based on the readings and were pretty easy. The readings were super long though averaging 50 pages a week. Participation in section is also really important.
Such an easy class. Provides a clear understanding of class materials and is willing to explain in other ways. Don't do the readings, he'll talk about the readings in class. No homework or class work. Class is made up of one midterm and final. Study guide provided, super easy, no need to study if you come to lecture. Plus, he sure is a cutie pie ;)
Watch movie for lecture quiz every week 30% 3 multiple choice. Sometimes you need choose more. 2 papers take home.
2 take-home paper and some questions for midterm. 2 take-home paper assignment.
Two papers for midterm And final Two papers assignments. About 5 pages.
Bouley is a gem of a lecturer. Essay prompts are very straightforward, and if you attend OH or lectures, he will tell you exactly what he is looking for. However, I wish he would add options for essay prompts that go beyond just synthesizing the material. Overall, wonderfully interesting course with a deeply passionate professor!
Great professor! You can tell he's really passionate and loves history because his awesome lectures make history way more exciting than other professors. Grading scheme is 2 papers, take home midterm and in class final. Both include a small essay. Very doable if you just pay attention!
Not even a history major but Bouley is one of, if not the best professor I've had at ucsb. His lectures are informative and funny, which make it easy to stay engaged with the material. Midterms/papers were fair and based entirely on lecture material. He is really helpful and welcoming in office hours, I highly recommend taking any of his courses
If you pay attention in lecture and at least glance at a few of the readings you can swing a high B or A. If you're a relatively competent writer, the SAQs and short paper will be a breeze. All you have to do is gain a conceptual understanding of the trends Fogu touches on in Italian history.
A lot of people will complain about his grading but their notes were probably not enough. it is hard to get lost in his lectures at time but I literally typed everything that came out of his mouth word for word and then went through after to understand. Yes it was tedious but it was key for my success in the class. Great if global studies major.
