This seminar focuses on storytelling and the genre of "microhistory" in understanding the past. Microhistory has as its goal the recovery of daily life and experiences of those who had tended to be ignored by traditional historiography--e.g. peasants, women, and slaves. Through focusing on a specific story, event, or set of documents, proponents of microhistory argue that the individual experience can open a window into a wider understanding of the past. This seminar will focus on fascinating microhistories-- e.g. a heretical miller, a daring impostor--but also give students the chance to write their own stories.

CollegeEven though this lecture was asynch and we just watched pre-recorded video, but Bouley is such a great lecturer and his videos are very engaging! We had weekly quizzies and two papers and a final paper. The grading is not very clear so going to your TA's office hour and Bouley's office hour really helps!
Bouley is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about history and makes the class fun to be in. Class was 100 students and he still made the effort to learn names and talk to students during discussions. He is excited to tell you about cool things and wants you to think they're cool too!
It's simple: 1. I see a class Prof. Bouley teaches.
 2. I take that class.
Its like talking to your dad about history. Every lecture is story time, he pauses for questions, keeps it engaging, and even though it's a lot of info, the structure and expectations are clear. If you focus and attend lecture, you can pass with near an A.
The lectures felt like story hour -- very engaging speaker and obviously very knowledgeable.
Took Pass/No Pass. Professor Fogu is really cool and passionate. Go to office hours! Lectures can be hard to understand bc he uses very complex language, only clarifies if you talk to him one on one. Quizzes every week on the movies (3Qs) and a midterm essay and a final (which is quite hard) shows sequences from any movies and u write about them.
midterm gets a cheat sheet, and the final is a paper. Each week has a reading and a short writing assignment, but it's def manageable. He's really nice and passionate about the class. My TA was also great
