Schley is a caring person, but he is not a good lecturer at all. His lectures do not prepare you well for the midterms and barely taught anything. Made his final short, but very point heavy and brought my A down to a B+. I suggest going to CLAS and teaching yourself if you want any grade above a C. Offered extra credit.
Prof was nice caring guy but he could barely teach the class. He did not prepare us well for the midterms. Made 1st midterm wk 2 of class, and for the other ones he did not provide an answer key for practice exams. Lecture was really useless and I had no idea what was going on. If you want to get an A in this class, GO TO CLAS and drop in hours.
Professor Schley is one of the nicest teachers I've had here at UCSB. He is super kind and cares a lot about his students doing well in his class. The lectures can be slightly disorganized, but there are so many helpful resources provided if you don't understand the material. He offers plenty of extra credit and even rounds grades up. He's great!
He doesn't post the solution to problems done in class so make sure you attend lecture, WebWork hw is insane but he does give extra credit if you do it early, but sometimes it's impossible to do it because he hasn't even gone over those topics yet. Exams are very confusing, and he's unclear on what's gonna be tested; you never know what to expect.
It is very clear that Dr. Schley wants his students to succeed. HW is unlimited tries and you get extra credit for completing homework assignments early. He removes exam questions that might've caused confusion. He is very accessible outside of class. He truly cares about his students and it shows. If you put in the effort, its easy to succeed
After reading these ratings at the beginning of the quarter I thought "Maybe he isn't that bad" I greatly underestimated just how bad someone could be at teaching. The lectures were unorganized, he constantly made mistakes, made topics overly complicated, etc. Possibly the worst experience I've ever had with an educator. Avoid if possible.
His lectures aren't organized, he has poor time management and expects us to know almost everything already so he teaches us as if we're reviewing the topics, never really getting deeper into how to do problems. He's very nice and wants his students to succeed but he is just horrible at teaching
This professor is absolutely horrible, he teaches only by giving examples and is horrible at explaining any of the concepts. The average on all of the midterms have been extremely low and he is claiming that he will not curve the class
Schley is one of the worst teachers I've ever had, for ANYTHING. He's very nice and personable, but his teaching style is impressively horrible, teaching the whole course through example problems and only briefly explaining core concepts. The homework is also useless and unhelpful, as he likes to jump around without ANY consistency whatsoever.
bro everyone said this was an easy class but there is no curve and the average on the midterms has been consistently below 60%
Horrible at explaining, and the homework and tests do not correlate to what we learn in class. this should be an easy class but he has made it extremely difficult
This class is terrible. The TA is unkind and not helpful whatsoever, he also is extremely judgmental. The teacher is nice but the lectures make zero sense and neither does the homework. Compared to the other teachers that teach this taking this class with him is like taking a completely different class.
He's a very caring professor and you can tell he wants his students to succeed but I don't think he prepares his students well because his lecturers consist of examples on topics he expects u to already know. I don't think he's good at teaching only because I never felt prepared enough even with CLAS, you basically teach urself all the material.
Does not explain anything and only uses examples to teach. I am always confused in lecture
I just started this course but genuinely wtf
Lectures were very helpful in understanding the content. Walked students through each step. Practice exams were very similar to the real exams. Explained concepts clearly and offered to go over hard homework questions before they were due. Book isn't the best, so youtube will be your friend.
Nathan is a great person and very kind and you can tell he does want us to do well and pass his class. However, he just does not explain concepts and problems clearly. You end up just teaching yourself on your own time. Wouldn’t recommend to people who already struggles in math, you’ll just end up more confused.
Man does not know how to to teach, only sets up practice problems for each lecture. It is a self taught course and be ready too be mad. I did not enjoy his course one bit at all
Very disengaging lecture and hard to follow. Skips steps in his math and is super unclear. Unclear exam dates. Nice guy, but honestly more cut out to teach algebra 2.
Mr. Schley was a good teacher and was very passionate about his lectures. He always tried to explain the complicated concepts in compressed ways and was very good about answering questions during lectures. That being said, the course material itself is quite complicated, so make good use of him, TAs and CLAS help! Allows index cards on exams!
The lectures were really good and helped explain material in a very intuitive way. The weekly section quizzes were way too hard, and not completely the same concepts that we learned in lecture. Midterms and finals were just like the practice problems he provides, and there aren't many surprises. Nice guy who genuinely wants students to succeed.
Professor Schley does a great job at teaching Math 6A since he always tries to explain the abstract concepts in the most simplest ways he can, and so it makes the course a lot more easier to digest. My only complaint would be the weekly section quizzes as they are unnecessarily difficult and test obscure/niche topics from section.
We had two midterms and a final that were pretty similar to the practice we were given however, we had really hard weekly quizzes in section. They curved them at the end because everyone was failing them and it only counted as 10% of the grade. The professor is super nice and the class is lecture heavy however I did a lot of learning on my own.
I have had prof Schley for 2 classes now, I think he is much better in upper division style classes that are more concept heavy than raw computation heavy. Both classes had a lot of homework and difficult weekly quizzes. If you want an easy A and to learn very little you probably wont like him as a professor.
