Slideshow with no pictures guide lectures. Material is generally dry for someone with basic background knowledge in linguistics, with occasional jokes. Concepts are well explained with examples used to parse out distinctions. Weekly checkpoints have an unlimited number of attempts and usually detailed feedback.

Super funny. The words that he uses to describe the topics can be a bit confusing but if you read the textbook beforehand its alright. His mask and mich combo might put you to sleep tho. Very interesting class as well

Kennedy is one of the funniest professor's I've had at ucsb so far. You're graded on participation, quizzes/assignments online that you can retake until you get 100%, and 1 midterm and 1 final. You do need to actually understand terms and the material in order to do well, but his class wasn't too bad and it's not difficult to do well.

Two quizzes a week, unlimited attempts. Super easy class. One midterm and one final both very short. You do have to show up to the lectures because he doesn't post them online. I never touched the textbook and still passed so... he's that professor that tries to be funny too.

Prof Kennedy is great! His lectures are accessible online but he alters them, so it's worth going in person. Mostly graded on weekly reading quizzes/assignments that you get unlimited tries for. Midterm and final were only worth 15% each. Highly recommend this class if you need a GE/extra units!

I took 3 classes with him and he's amazing! Really passionate and understanding and makes linguistics easy to understand. Midterm and exam are online and open book/open web. Lectures are in-person but if you can't make it he can send you a recording of the lecture. Overall an awesome and caring prof that wants his students to succeed :)

Kennedy is a great teacher and this class is a great start into linguistics. There are weekly online reading quizzes and the midterm and the final are online and at home. Overall, pretty easy and very interesting

While not many students would attend his lectures in-person but rather online via zoom. He seems very passionate about teaching the material. Easy GE class to take by just being graded on a few things: weekly checkpoint quizzes, midterm, and a final along with your section attendance.

I wonder why this professor's reviews are so high. Maybe because of Ling 20+70. Assignments are a big part of your grade for this class. It's only fortunate that the TA was more chill on grading because whenever the professor did, it was extremely harsh as if we were expected to be masters already at our craft. TY TA for being more considerate

Prof Kennedy's really awesome! Possibly my favorite professor at UCSB. In addition to the 3 tags I chose, I would've also picked "hilarious" and "accessible outside class." Although I marked LING20 as the class here, I've taken others (Ex: 15) and upper division classes with him too! They've all been awesome. Good at teaching and explaining + fun.

Professor Kennedy is caring and fun, and it's not his fault the topic of Ling20 was pretty boring and tedious. One or two long chapters for readings every week, which you should definitely do. He also does live zooms and recordings, which is so helpful. Definitely excited to take him again for higher-level linguistic classes!

Very boring class in general. Bob Kennedy is a good professor, but he does not teach me anything and I am not learning a single thing in his boring class about linguistics. Very bad and boring lectures, ranting about stupid tangents back and forth all day long. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! YOU WILL FAIL!!!! do not recommend unless going to sleep bored!

Very easy class, the midterm and the final were both online. Graded mostly by weekly quizzes and weekly assignments which are both easy 100%s since he made it so the quiz/assignment lets you redo the questions if you get them wrong. Would 100% take again

I appreciate the leniency on homework, the weekly quizzes and the online exams, but Professor Kennedy's teaching style is monotonous and dull and does not provide a good sense of the material most of the time. The textbook is similarly unhelpful, and he expects students to know/understand far more than we would for an introduction course.

Super flexible, caring, understanding of student's situations and worries about covid. Tried very hard to relate to students and make it an enjoyable experience. Lectures and slides were posted and they had all the information you needed. Great professor, highly recommend.

Lecture always recorded, sections optional if make-up work is done. Prof was very communicative and wanted to give easy points where he could. Pretty flexible and nice! Grading was a little inconsistent though... Super difficult midterm (5+ hours, scored a C) but final was a breeze (30 min, scored an A+). Content was clear.

bob is genuinely one of the better professors on campus. he's very understanding and is always pretty willing to help with extenuating circumstances that might make class hard. he's fantastic with giving feedback and helps his students understand the material really well. I'd take him again for any of his other courses!

Professor Kennedy was an amazing professor who deeply cares about his students. His lectures are entertaining and he includes breaks and humor. Very nice and funny guy. On april fools he rick rolled everybody. Funniest professor I've had. assignments are guaranteed 100 and attendance is just show up and just exists and you'll get a 100. The exams were kinda hard for me even though they were open note but I think its fine considering every other grading criteria is basically guaranteed 100.

Fifth time taking Prof. Kennedy. He is very caring and supportive. The exams and assignments are not hard but inspiring. My favorite professor in ling department!
