Very knowledgeable professor who is passionate about what she teaches, she often brings up examples from firsthand experiences. Lectures have a lot of information. Reading and films required, but the info from the readings are often covered by the lecture material. Pretty easy GE class, grade is more dependent on your TA.
Kind professor, very knowledgeable about the subject. She reminds me of my mom. She includes lots of info on their slides that cover the info in the readings. A lot of material that has to be covered, but it is manageable and she does a good job being thorough. Overall good prof., not a difficult class, and grade is more dependent on your TA.
she reminds me of my auntie, a very kind and passionate professor. lots of reading on syllabus but you can get away with doing almost none of it, but i suggest going through some of the films. midterm is bluebook with ID questions/short essay (2-3 paragraphs) + multiple choice, final is same + one full essay. 1 film essay, be prepared to write!!
Prof. Mayfair is really kind, passionate, and knowledgeable about her subject. (You can get away with not doing the readings since the PPs are very text-heavy.) She offers a lot of anecdotes from her field work in the 90's which I appreciate. She felt like my cool Asian grandma.
Really kind and clearly passionate about her subject. Lectures could be a bit long and dry at times but I enjoyed myself overall. Lots of extra credit opportunities too. Lecture attendance was required and there were a lot of assigned readings (but I didn't do the latter and did fine in the class).
Tests were part online, part IDs on terms from the lectures and readings. Would take another class with Dr. Yang
Prof. Yang is really friendly and she cares for the students. Lectures are long and sometimes a bit boring but her slides are clear and easy to follow. She is willing to answer questions from students from an unbiased angle. Grading depends more on your TA, but the exams are pretty fair.
She's very knowledgeable in her area, so talking to her during her office hour can help students interested in cultural study (and ANTH, perhaps). The lecture is a bit boring but all information you need is on the PPT, which makes exams fairly easy. I will see her courses are very beneficial for people loving Asian culture. And her dress style slays
Very professional and caring.
EACS/RGST128: 25% presentation 30% midterm 45% final(75% tests for nonstem?!). Yapped so much and barely lectured. Didn't provide much academically relevant material/information. No instructions for presentation, graded exponentially harder on final despite extra final essay. Extra credit didn't make a difference(she didn't even add it).
Thoroughly enjoyed taking KOR 113 with Professor Hwang! There are weekly readings and a short quiz at the beginning of each lecture on the readings. The quizzes are straightforward and not trying to trick you. Her papers are also straightforward and enjoyable to write. She's a great lecturer, a passionate prof, and wants you to do well!
I took Professor Hwang KOR 153 class and it was such a nice class to take at the end of your school day! It's not easy because it's simple, it's easy because she's super engaging and makes the topics entertaining to learn. Even as someone who's not a reader, I enjoyed the reading she assigned and the conversations in class abt it :) would do again!
professor hwang is amazing! i took KOR 153 with her and she made lectures engaging and interesting. we had weekly reading responses, 2 weekly discussion questions, a midterm, and a final project. one of my favorite classes that i've ever taken at UCSB!
As a RG ST major this was the worst professor I've had. Her lectures were packed full of random information and there was no clear layout to the course. As a side note the neon colors she's used on her slides gave me a headache every class. Tests were hard but at least the final was online. Would recommend avoiding this teacher.
I took Asia 132 (didn't have this class as an option on RMP) with professor Hwang, and I HIGHLY recommend taking any class with her. The lectures are engaging and she makes it an active class. she's humorous, attentive and overall a great teacher.
I really enjoyed this class! The lectures and readings are interesting and insightful. She is really understanding and helpful. I definitely recommend this class. The course was made up of weekly readings, weekly short reading quizzes, a multiple choice midterm, and a paper final.
I loved this class so much! really unique opportunity to learn more about Korean literature/history, and Professor Hwang is a fantastic lecturer. about 60 pages of reading per week, reading quizzes and one page write-ups, in class midterm, and a final paper. i really enjoyed the material and looked forward to going to class each week!
Very easy class. did not do any reading cause the TA was very nice to conclude everyting from reading. Extra credit was watching a opera. She is a nice person but sometimes very stereotypical of how China is right now.
This class is CHIN 32 or RGST 32. Same thing, just can enroll under either. She is a nice lady, her tests are mainly essays, but she gives study guides and adheres to them. Although attendance isn't done by iClickers, she sometimes gives pop quizzes but they're easy. Not hard to get a good grade if you study.
People can have different opinions, and she listens very carefully about our questions and opinions. She has really been helpful and was in her office hour every time.
Encourages good discussions.
SO MUCH READING. But other than that it was a pretty easy class. The Mayfair is a pretty chill, funny lil lady. Showing up to class is mandatory but she posts lectures online anyway. Downside- midterm and final were mostly essay questions so my hand was hecka cramping by the end
So much reading is involved in this class. She is a bit technologically challenged which can get a bit old. You have to be on top of your stuff for the midterm and final! If you work hard you can pass without a doubt.
Lectures were boring, but available online. Reading is basically required in order to do well on midterm & final. LOTS OF READING. Wish we had gotten more preparation for final. Grade based on midterm, final, group project, & attendance. Class is hard because of so much reading and difficult midterm/final, but work hard and you'll probably pass.
