Baron is really fair and really does want you to succeed. You will enjoy him as a TA! He will go far in life!
Professor Hiltner is such a kind person and you can tell he truly cares about the course material which is always a bonus. The class was graded 20% on attendance, 40% midterm, and 40% final. For both the midterm and the final the only studying I did was about 4 hours the day before, rereading the prezi. Make sure to pay attention and youll pass.
This class is an easy pass but I wouldn't say an easy A. His tests were surprisingly specific, with questions I wouldn't have even thought to study. Exams are only 50 questions each, so there wasn't a lot of room for error, causing me a very borderline B+. He is a nice guy, has a voice of a yoga instructor.
Amazing TA. Really cares and puts lots of effort into helping the students.
Personally, that class was really boring and he always talked in a monotoned voice which made it worst. I tried really hard to study for that class and I did all the readings, attended the lectures and I still ended up with a C. It's only an easy class if you understand what he's talking about. I would definitely just do a pass or no pass .
took his class in the summer but I highly recommend him! obviously you have to do the reading (it's an English class, its a must) but the midterm and final were both straight forward. come to class daily and do the readings, then you'll do fine. his tests are pretty easy if you did the reading. got a B+ in his class with just doing the readings.
Very interesting topic, sometimes interesting lecture. Reading is a must and attending movie days is a must (dont say you will watch it on your own bc you know you wont). Loads of the questions off the midterm and final are based on the reading and movies, not everything is covered in lecture. Attended the honors section which was just a discussion
Ken is an AMAZING professor. His lectures are very organized and clear. He is always open to answer questions that students have. The class is not hard to get an A as long as you look over the slides and the readings. Watching the movie also helps. He is an awesome professor and I definitely recommend him.
Professor Hiltner's class is very easy and organized. As long as you do the readings and watch the documentaries, the class should be an extremely easy A. Both the midterm and the final are multiple choice, so as long as you have a basic idea of the answer, most likely you'll get it right. The readings and documentaries were pretty interesting.
Professor Hiltner has been the most influential and inspiring professor I've had at UCSB. He cares a lot for his students, answers all questions, and is one of the most positive/non-biased professors I've had. Definitely would take again!
Really interewsting class. If you do the readings, pay attention in lecture and study the slides you will be fine.
Ken's very passionate about the Environment, sometimes lectures get a little boring if you're not as enthusiastic as he is. I took this class because I heard it was an easy GE, but I'm not interested in ENG/ES so the information didn't really stick. However it was a good and informative class overall
easy teacher. Take it for an easy GE class. Just read the reader (not that long to be honest.) And before the midterm or final, just study the prezi online and you'll do fine. Movies are interesting too and no section. One of the best classes offered here at UCSB for GEs
He's an excellent lecturer, although you may lose focus at times. His slides are rich with information and the Prezi form is incredible. Show up to lectures for iclicker credit. Tests are extremely fair and there are no surprises if you study a good amount. you dont have to take notes, just listen. when reviewing, look at the slides online.
This course was INCREDIBLE. Ken Hiltner is awesome. He posts all of the official student evaluations, which are similar to these comments, to his personal website: kenhiltner (dot) com under "Student Feedback." There are hundreds of comments there. (Why don't more professors do this???) He is clearly one of the most popular professors at UCSB.
Great course. Amazing professor. It is up to you how involved you become, as the readings can be a bit hard and the lectures long. However, in terms of environmental issues and thinking, the course can be eye-opening, even life-changing, if you give it a chance. Really great lectures if you care enough to actually show up for them.
Lectures are 2 hours long. Don't waste your time going to them. You can get the information online. Do the readings. The tests are at least 3/4 based on the readings. Easiest Area G GE class you can take. Boring, but easy.
The lectures are online in case you miss them but his lectures were really long and cover a lot of time periods. His lectures seem to repeat the information over and over again. The tests were easy if you know the basis of the assigned readings. Overall, the class was graded fairly with chances to improve.
In the beginning I would go to lecture, but it was too long to sit through (1 hour & 50 mins). I ended up only going to the lecture before the midterm, the day of the midterm, the lecture before the final & the day before the final. As long as you read the reader, watch the films, & study his Prezi, you will pass no problem.
Should read to pass. Not a bad class to learn the environmental aspect of literature, but the class was just really late in the evening and they were also long lectures.
Ken is a very smart man. His voice will inspire you to talk like him for the rest of the quarter. The overall purpose of this class is to read stories and understand the environmental implications from them. Not a hard class. *Side Note* He is against deforestation yet uses a 550 PAGE READER with most pages only using 1/4 THE PAGE.. haha oh man
Hiltner is a great lecturer. It is clear that he cares deeply about the environment which makes the class even better. It is a lot of reading but if you go to lecture and take good notes theres no need to sweat if you miss some of it. I would highly recommend.
Professor Hiltner is the best. He really cares about his students and takes the time to listen to every response. He always ask for students opinion. Some professors like to hear the sound of their own voice but not Hiltner. Every comment is important. His tests are based on lectures. He is super personable and is big on Environmental literature.
probably the coolest person at ucsb. he has the voice of a white morgan freeman. and he deeply cares about his students. def recommend
