ENG134AA . Huang Yu 4 Months Ago

the class was graded by participation, mini research paper, 4 film reviews, pop quizzes, and a final paper. he grades based off of letters and not numbers (you'll receive an A instead of 90) and he never inserts grades into canvas so you wont know your grade until it is in gold. never answers emails and does pop quizzed based on readings.I did p/np

Lectures were so so messy and all over the place. If there weren't TA sections, I would have failed this class. Would drift off topic during lectures as well.

I stopped attending lectures because I got nothing out of them; the professor would ramble on about things that did not correlate to the reading, like his hometown. The test is fill-in and blank, if memorization is not your strong suit, you will suffer. Do anything in your power to not take this class; it'll save you a lot of stress.

graded solely on section attendance, midterm, paper, and final. the paper and final occur around the same time. both tests have a fill in the blank section, which was absolutely ridiculous and taught nothing. the paper had no prompt, the only requirement was the page count. did not specify in the course description that the class was only poetry.

Lectures were unorganized/all over the place. Didn't know what was going on half the time. Only graded on section attendance, midterm & final, and paper. Exams are fill in the blank and a short response. Really didn't like the fill in the blank part, as that teaches nothing about the content of the readings and was hard to study.

Kinda funny, but that's it. Unorganized and confusing lectures. Doesn't post grades and only accepts assignments through email, but he won't email you back. Spontaneously assigns writing assignments during class rather than sticking to the schedule in the syllabus. No grading criteria. For a poetry lab, we never actually write poetry.

You won't know any of your grades until he uploaded to Gold, so you won't have a chance to change PNP or DROP the class. The Final Paper accounts for 50%, and his rating is very harsh.

If you attend lecture and take notes, it’s an easy A. attendance is mandatory but his lectures are amazing!

Loved Professor Huang! He was really funny and the class was interesting. Super easy. Graded on a take-home midterm, take-home final, and 5-7 page final paper. Easy A. He has some really interesting stories and insights.

Grading criteria weren't transparent. Did not update grades throughout the term - We only knew what we got when grades appeared on gold. However, has great stories about immigration and is highly respected! Take his class with caution

Professor Huang was super engaging as a lecturer + incorporated a bunch of different material in his course -- books, poems, videos, movies, music, etc. I didn't really know what I was signing up for when I chose this class, but he blew away any expectations I had. Show up to class, pay attention, take good notes, ask questions. Be engaged!

Good Professor. The class consists of just reading lots of poems. Tests make sense - you're graded on the key ideas that the professor talks about (the hardest part) and then matching these quotes to the poems and poets, so mainly memorization. Don't bother with the textbook you can just look up the poets/texts.

I didn't go to this class for 6 weeks or read any of the readings before the day before the midterm and final and got a B. if you put in very minimal effort you will get an A. He's a cool guy but the class was graded very oddly.

This prof is awesome! No idea why he's rated low. If you show up and do the work you'll do well in the class. That's all anyone can ask. They check your thinking but incorporating an essay at the end, and check your knowledge with the fill in the blank tests. They're not everyones favorite, but if you go to lecture you will get a lot out of class

God I should have listened when I was told as an English major to skip this professor. I scored a 90 on the midterm without ever going to lecture (they're truly useless, I've gone to two all quarter). That said, the test format is truly ridiculous. Someone said it before, I'll say it again, fill in the blank ID is not the point of an English class!

For this class there are almost no grading criteria, and some of the deadlines lack a clear date. We were assigned his own book, and it did not relate with the curriculum thus far.

Took this class for a GE and was far better than I expected. Reading is a max. of 10 pgs prior to every class. Majority of tests consists of info off the syllabus such as author names and titles of poems, and the memorization is usually just a single key word that he has emphasized in lecture. Midterm, final, and one 5-7 pg paper. Highly recommend.

This is by far the worst English class that I have taken at UCSB. He spends most of lectures stating his political opinions and giving stories about his personal life. He does not produce developed insight about the poetry and short stories read for class. He encourages participation, but challenges and mocks everyone that volunteers.

Worst class ever. The lectures were fine but pretty dull but the tests are RIDICULOUS. He will select two lines of poetry out of the hundreds of pages of poetry you read for this class and take out two words and expect you to remember exactly what they were, the author, and the title. Rote memorization is not the point of an English class!

His tests are fill-in-the-blank and a short essay. Very easy if you do the readings and attend lectures. He is very passionate about his subject and very funny. Very helpful during office hours. Two essays and he makes it very clear that they can be about anything related to the readings (no essay topics), so be ready to get creative. Great class.

I really enjoyed this class. It's about poetry, and his lectures seem very confusing at first. Just know the tests are super easy.

Awesome teacher. Tests are incredibly easy if you do at least some sort of skimmingspark notes of the texts. Go to class because anything he talks about could be on the tests. He is hilarious anyways so you won't get bored. lectures were sometimes hard to follow but if you generally pay attention you will be fine. Wish I could have him again.
