Prof. Tober was amazing that I changed my major to soc! Assignments were weekly posts (500 words) but not hard, just make sure to cite correctly! Section attendance is mandatory. The textbook helped me a lot, and each chapter was $1. 1 midterm, and 1 final + 1 essay on a sociological topic of your choice. Super interesting intro course to take!
Definitely recommend Tober for any class. Only HW is 500 words a week, but not hard as you can cite lecture as source. Section attendance is mandatory. There is required reading weekly, but not really necessary to do as most if not all midterm and final content is covered in lecture. There is one essay, but TAs really help. Take this class!
The professor is awesome shes very cool and the subject matter is easy to enjoy.
I loved this class, and I loved Tober. Her lectures were organized, she used examples from her own life to support the material, and posted stuff online so if you missed class it was no big deal. There's a decent bit of reading each week, but nothing serious, and a weekly forum post that goes off of the material for that week. Def would take again!
This class was seriously easy and enjoyable/applicable. Tober is super cool and relatable, and her lectures were great. Work was a 500-word blog post each week based on the weekly reading/lectures, an article-based research paper, and open-book 50 MC for both midterm and final. Little effort needed for an A, wish I could go back and take it again.
fun and interesting lectures
Dr. Tober was definitely one of my favorite professors that I've had at UCSB thus far. Her lectures were relevant, engaging, funny, personable, and extremely informative. I actually looked forward to going to her lectures and hearing what she had to say each week. Highly recommend and hoping to take more of her classes in the future!!
She is an angel!!!! She is passionate about what she teaches and the sweetest. 2 short essays and a book review but not hard at all!! I love her and her TA is super sweet and helpful as well! Definitely taking more classes w her! 12/10 recommend!
Professor Tober is sweet and an engaging lecturer! SOC1 was an intro class that was very surface level & gave a good overview of sociology. 2 multiple choice midterms (easy, unlimited time), weekly forum posts (500 words), and one informal essay. Grading done by TA. Lecture basically as textbook, so you could skip lecture if you wanted
This is an amazing class I tell everyone to take. Tober is an incredibly clear and engaging lecturer. The time would fly because of how interesting the subjects were and she would always incorporate personal anecdotes. This class made me switch to a double major in sociology. Grading is clear+ fairly easy. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
weekly 500 words forum discussion, a midterm, a final (both unlimited timing but must complete within one sitting), and a research article essay. The lectures are copies of the reading, so make sure you either go to the lecture or read the textbook. Overall, the lectures are pretty boring. TA matters. Some give solid feedback some don't.
Very easy A - lectures were posted online, so attendance was not mandatory. Weekly forum posts - as long as you referenced material from textbook & cited correctly you got full points. Midterm & final were open book/note and not timed. I would highly recommend to anyone who needs to fill credit.
I loved this class! May even consider a major in Sociology because the content was so interesting and Professor Tober clearly loves teaching, so lectures are engaging. There are weekly writing posts that aren't too hard to get done and tests are easy.
This has been my favorite class at UCSB so far. Dr. Tober is so passionate about what she's teaching & genuinely cares about how her students are doing. There are weekly forum response posts which seemed hard/annoying at first, but now I kind of love writing them. There was one paper, and the midterm and final are MC and online, no time limit.
I did not get the chance to talk to her personally but it's an easy class. It's cute she brings up her husband a lot, he makes guest appearances sometimes. You can tell she is passionate about her field which makes it easy to connect with the material. I enjoyed reading the chapters in the text, personally. 2 papers, mc midterm and final. Keep up.
I took this class for the area D GE requirement and I highly recommend. Lectures were very interesting, reading was pretty easy (you can just read the summary of each chapter in the textbook and be ok), and the midterm and final had no time limit and was really easy if you watch the lectures.
Lectures are very engaging and made info easy to understand. There was a good amount of reading and note taking needed to do well on midterm and final (MC) but it was interesting. Criteria to succeed was very clear and if you put in an effort you will do well. Weekly chapter reading, one lecture (1hr ish), disc post and respond. Loved Dr. Tober!!!!
This class assigned a ton of writing. Not just writing though, unnecessary writing. You had to write 500 words where 200 would do. It's manageable, but boring, and I (a naturally verbose writer who's usually at the upper length limit) felt the need to pad my writing. I would not recommend, although the class was otherwise tolerable.
Professor Tober seemed really cool, and I wish I could have taken the class in person. The homework/reading load was really manageable and relevant. The textbook was really inexpensive, and we only had to buy the chapters we actually read which was nice. Only one chapter each week to read and the lectures weren't too long. She was super organized.
Professor does not teach at all. She just puts up her past recorded lectures from last year. She's very hard to contact and super rude when you do reach out. She acts like you're bothering her when you're reaching out, and is very unprofessional when contacted. Relies heavily on TA's and lets them take full authority on your grades. Unresponsive.
She does not teach. Uses the same recorded lectures as past quarters. Assigns a lot of reading, most of it difficult theory that is hard to understand then expects you to grasp it yourself from there. Mandatory forum post and forum reply every week ends up feeling like you are writing a (short) essay every weekend plus a paper, midterm, and final
I loved Dr. Tober's lectures and the class in general, but my TA was kinda strict and unclear with what she was grading on.
Dr. Tober's class is interesting and not at all difficult. Her grading criteria is very clear and the class is well structured. The exams connect to textbook readings and lectures, and there is only one (short) paper. There are also weekly discussion board posts. I highly recommend Dr. Tober for Soc1!
Each week there is 1 prerecorded lecture, textbook reading, a forum post responding to a prompt, and 2 responses to classmates but overall manageable. The material isn't hard at all so easy A if you put in the work.
