I took Coburn for 120A my junior year and didn't love her as I felt like she didn't teach us enough. This course, on the other hand, she teaches very well. It's a lot of fun as 50% of the class is working on a final project and the rest is homeworks that help you with that project. She's genuinely fantastic at teaching this class.
She is a fantastic professor in all aspects. My only qualm with her is her unresponsiveness over email, but this is mostly because I don't go to class :)
Dr. Coburn is very accessible and easygoing. She exhibits an optimistic and caring attitude during her lectures, which are quickly paced and heavy on content. Even though course material is challenging, homework problems from the textbook are graded on completion, with online quizzes provided weekly and a single note sheet allowed on each exam.
Coburn is an alright teacher but good if you are ready to learn without the pressure of grades. The tests are identical to problems in lecture/homework, and sections are super organized and teach you a lot. Lectures themself went slowly but lots of time was spent on each problem, and it took very little work outside of homework.
Seems most people either hate or love Dr. Coburn but as long as you go into it without the notion that you're getting an easy A & actually study - you'll do well in her class. She is a bit tough to reach outside of class & does make calculation errors in her slides but the study guides prepare you well for the midterm/final + cheat sheets allowed
so cutie patootie i love her
Dr. Coburn never cared about the students. Super hard exams and low-quality assignments. Avoid her at all cost.
So many mistakes in her slides. Lecture is a waste of time.
I am not a great fan of unreasonably hard exams, highly disorganized slides, and amateur professorship. Dr. Coburn clearly don't have a good grasp of how to teach. Previously, she gained popularity with easy-A's (which is toxic); now, she tortures the class a lot. I will recommend Mouti or Ravat instead.
I got an A according to my assignment grades + my Gauchospace grade and on GOLD I have a B. I reached out to Coburn about this but she's highly unresponsive so I reached out to my TA TWICE as well. My grade is STILL wrong and probably won't ever be fixed. I just graduated so like whatever but this isn't an issue students should have to deal with.
Love Coburn so much. I took 120B and 131 with her. She's the best professor in the stats department period!
50% homework and 50% final project, very clear about the grading critera and very very generous about grades. Super nice prof and an easy A for basically all classes she teaches. Never responds to emails though, so go to office hours/lecture for questions. Great professor and I learned a lot.
Dr. Coburn was great. She's a really nice person overall. Also probably the easiest A you can get in the PSTAT department for every course she teaches. One problem is that she never responds to emails so you have to find her in person during lectures. Take her if you want good grades but don't expect to learn deep into the materials.
Dr. Coburn's PSTAT 120A is one of the best options you have if you want to get A. However it might not dive in as deep as other 120A. The only imperfection of her is that she will never respond to your email. Other than that the class is generous on giving As. section attendance required and hw graded on completion.
Professor Coburn's class is easy and she is a nice person. She is also not a tough grader. However, the lecture is always behind the homework, and she does not respond emails. She teaches way too slow, and we were not able to finish all the materials we need to be prepared for 120B.
Professor Coburn is a very easy professor, graded 50% on section attendance and homework (which was graded on completion). She, however, taught the material very slowly and would often lag behind assigned home work. Her in class examples were very simple while the homework was very complex. I didn't learn a lot.
Nicest professor I've met. The grading scheme was very generous with hw being half the grade and only graded on completeness. She is very helpful during office hours. Her implementation of R in the course was most useful too. Especially compared to the majority of the PSTAT department, Dr. Coburn is amazing!
Absolutely one of the nicest professors at UCSB, but not that great in terms of teaching. Lenient Grading. Should be your first choice.
Had a group project. No exam. Topics are quite interesting.
