COBURN K M
Frequently made mistakes on example problems and often did not give clear answers to student questions. Resulting slow pace led to us missing 2 full weeks of content. Didn't really promote understanding of material, just how to plug in formulas. Honestly not even worth the easy A for PSTAT majors. Take someone else if possible
Dr. Coburn is a really sweet lady and posts all her lecture videos online for 120C. The exams are tough and you won't find the answers in hw or anything, but doable if you watch all the lecture videos in entirety. Pay close attention to hw because it is graded with scrutiny. She is super caring and helpful in office hours so definitely go.
confusing lectures, doesnt teach and doesnt respond to emails. the midterm was hard (way too hard for undergrad class) and you dont really learn anything so if youre a stats major pls dont take her
Her lectures were pretty incomprehensible and hard to follow. She will literally never respond to emails and TAs can't get a hold of her. Homework and quizzes were graded on completion which helped your grade but did not help you learn. The midterm was extremely difficult that she had to make the final exactly like the review and midterm.
She was really organised for this class and fair and it was pretty easy to do well. 5 homeworks - one due every two weeks worth 10% each, and you were allowed submit up to two homeworks up to a week late with no penalty. Final project worth 50% which you could do on whatever and she tells you all about that right at the start.
I took Coburn for 120A my junior year and didn't love her as I felt like she didn't teach us enough. This course, on the other hand, she teaches very well. It's a lot of fun as 50% of the class is working on a final project and the rest is homeworks that help you with that project. She's genuinely fantastic at teaching this class.
She is a fantastic professor in all aspects. My only qualm with her is her unresponsiveness over email, but this is mostly because I don't go to class :)
Dr. Coburn is very accessible and easygoing. She exhibits an optimistic and caring attitude during her lectures, which are quickly paced and heavy on content. Even though course material is challenging, homework problems from the textbook are graded on completion, with online quizzes provided weekly and a single note sheet allowed on each exam.
Coburn is easily one of the sweetest and kindest professors, but i was not a big fan of her teaching style. Lectures are very theory based, which doesnt transfer over to the homework and midterm material. The midterm and final are extremely difficult, I got a C on both exams despite studying 20+ hours for each and going to office hours
Don't expect an easy class, times have changed. 30% midterm, 30% final, 40% basically guaranteed. Tests were graded nicely, but it was hard to solidly learn any of the concepts at all during lecture. She was a cootie pootootie and really nice and respectable. If she could change her teaching style slightly, learning outcomes would be better.
Exams felt hard, and the slides didn't help me study for them. The only resource that was given is a list of textbook problems, but I would have appreciated having actual practice exams since many times the questions end up being different. HW and quizzes are graded on completion, so if you're unable to keep up, you may end up cramming at the end.
Coburn is an alright teacher but good if you are ready to learn without the pressure of grades. The tests are identical to problems in lecture/homework, and sections are super organized and teach you a lot. Lectures themself went slowly but lots of time was spent on each problem, and it took very little work outside of homework.
