I like Ograin. He's a good lecturer. He often puts things into common language so it's easy to get what he's saying. Homework load is light. Office hours are worthwhile.
Definitely one of the best math profs I've ever had! The questions on tests always had familiar concepts; it's just a matter of self-discipline when it comes to studying. Ograin gives out about 10-20 practice problems per week, but only assigns 1 to be due each class. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS. Not doing them is why I almost failed: lack of studying
I have this professor for 4 of my undergrad classes and so far 2 of my graduate classes. He is easily one of my favorite professors at UCSB. I would definitely recommend taking his courses. He clearly enjoys teaching and is more than willing to go the extra mile to make your experience in his class enjoyable.
Great professor! The exams are very fair and he does a great job at covering all the required content in lectures.
Prof Ograin was great. Very organized class. His lectures were easy to follow and he was always available for questions. No curveballs on exams because he truly tested for understanding of the material. Homework took a while but was helpful to understanding course content. 5 exams worth 75% and 9 webwork sets worth 25%.
Best math prof I have EVER had. He cares a lot about what he's teaching, which makes the students have a love for the subject too. Encourages questions. Class was based on 5 tests, one given every 2 weeks, and weekly webwork problems. Totally handleable and he managed to make it fun. Take him if you can!
Prof. Ograin is one of the clearest and most organized professors in the math department. He never throws curveballs on tests and his homework and exams are all direct applications of what he covers in lectures (not always easy). The class can be a little dry sometimes, but he is genuinely so kind and helpful when needed. Would highly recommend.
Professor Ograin is great, very clear lecturer and let's you know exactly what is expected of you. He allowed me to submit a test late because of a technical difficulty which saved my grade big time. The only downside is Exams are worth 75% of the grade so you have to be sure not to mess up on them.
This professor knows math and knows how to teach it. I learned so much. It was challenging, but he cares a lot and will help you if you ask. Class was always engaging.
Chris is an excellent professor! Lectures are engaging and fun. He assigns a lot of homework but puts all the same stuff on the exams so no curveballs. I would 100% take his class again.
No Answer for everything, you must be learn by yourself. TOOOOOOOOOOO, Difficult toooooooooo study.
He assigned a book but then would make up his own proofs that were much harder. He couldn't even do his own proofs when we asked him during office hours. Chris is a "nice" guy but makes material much more difficult than need be. Also incredibly harsh grader.
Chris is a great guy and great lecturer but ridiculously harsh grader. The hw is doable but the exams are way harder. Make sure you really understand the material if you want to even pass. The average for the midterms was 50%. Final was exceptionally challenging.
Chris is super down to earth and is by far best math prof at ucsb. He really cares about his students. Pay attention and take notes in lecture. He lets you know what will be on exams.
Best math prof at ucsb. His lectures are incredibly engaging. He really cares about his students.
Chris is the best math Professor at UCSB. He actually cares about his students and is very down to earth. If you put in the work, show him youre putting in the work and go to office hours, then he will pass you regardless of your test scores. His lectures are super engaging. He is by far the best professor at UCSB.
The only reason I would go back to Ucsb is to attend his class. Hes great, smart, and cool!
Ograin was a great professor. He was very helpful in office hours and helps guide you to figure things out yourself verses just telling you the answer. Class is mostly working with those around you to work through the topics. Class was curved like crazy: 90-100% was A+, 80-89% was A, 70-79% was A-, 60-69% was B+, etc.
Chris has a great class structure. He spends about half of the time lecturing and half having students work on problems together. He presents concepts clearly and concisely. He really teaches you how to approach abstract math problems in a way that youre not overwhelmed.
I've had professor Ograin for math 102 A and B. He really cares about class participation and interaction between peers. He only spends a little bit of time lecturing and focuses more on students having hands on learning. He makes the class fun yet challenging
Loved his teaching style. Class is lots of memorisation but once you get the hang of it, most problems are doable on your own. Plus, he is very helpful during class. Really teaches you how to figure things out on your own.
He intentionally made this class more difficult than it should've been. On tests he didn't give any partial credit. He only had office hours once a week for two hours. Even during office hours he wasn't too helpful. His TA was just awful. I didn't like how he would look over your shoulder to see if you were doing the problems right.
Don't take 102a with Ograin. Every proposition in the class is tied to a number as defined by the book he chooses. i.e. prop 2.8. Since we are memorizing proposition numbers instead of learning about the theory behind the subject, the knowledge is non transferable to any other class that doesn't use this book. He says there is no need for memorizat
Not very helpful in office hours, started to prove a proof and got lost trying to prove his own proof. First midterm was doable with 5 proofs total, and he asked you to prove one. For the second midterm, he made us learn 26 proofs and put 2/26 on the midterm. Class is pure memorizing, lecture goes over one proof a day (far too slow). Do not take.
