His exams were fairly easy, though he likes to put some trick questions. Problems from the book are the midterm and final. He also emphasizes theory over computation. Overall a good professor.
He can be hard to understand sometimes but just ask if you are ever confused. I am a native Spanish speaker and meet with him every week for help. I so far got 17/18 and a 18/18 on midterms and aced the final. People are just not working hard enough. You learn alot by going to discussion, but people say lectures are confusing but to me they are not
Everyone unfairly hates on Garcia. Garcia is nice and cares about the students. He just expects students to be more independent and work more from the book. Homework, midterms and finals are all reasonable, just students are being lazy. Take Garcia if you are a real student, not a slacker offer.
I love mathematics but this man made me hate it. How can he get away with grading so dang hard? I got a 2 out of 30 points on the midterm when I thought I did okay. He gave me my first ever D in a math class in my whole math education. He created such a bad experience for me that I have never been able to let go of to this day. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I've had a bit of time to think about this class and it was simply unreasonable. Garcia hit below the belt by assigning material that was not covered in the book and by giving test problems on material he told us we did not need to worry about. He provided very little help in offices hours. Five engineering graduate students dropped this class.
He is a hard prof but fair, the average on the midterm was low but he gave a bunch of opportunities to make it up, a lot of students stopped going after the midterm so they ended up with poor grades since they missed the quizzes, I ended up with an A because I stuck with it and took the quizzes. Just don't take him if you plan on not showing up.
To be fair, he is enthusiastic about helping students. Otherwise, I disagree over his fairness despite of the extra credit, and would extend to say he is completely disconnected from how well his class is doing. His HW is long, repetitive, and lacks variety. One-third of class didn't show up to his final. Only a masochist would take him for 118!
His class was straight from the book. He had to give us extra credit because he grades so hard (but he also grades the extra credit hard so beware). If your answer makes sense but is not his verbatim expect a zero. Although the class material is excrutiating I would never take this teacher for any other class.
While the average on the midterm was 26% (highest score a 50%), and while he did not curve the class, he offered nine easy quizzes worth 2% of the total grade each, plus a bonus question on the final worth 10-15% of the total class grade. Overall, quite fair. He is also extremely helpful if you talk to him during office hours or outside of class.
Don't take any class with this professor at all costs. Average on the midterm was 26% and he did not curve. That should say enough.
He is incapable of teaching. I was not able to understand what he was talking about. I learned nothing in his CCS vector calculous class. I will go out of my way never to take a class from him again. It was a complete waste of effort.
This professor talks fast with a spanish accent and is hard to understand and comprehend in class. He is rude in lecture but I guess he is nice if you talk to him personally. The mid term was simple and the final was very hard. Thanks Garcia-Cervera for my only C in college!
He is a nice person (he would help you as much as he can if you go to his office hour), but not a good professor. you won't ever understand his lecture at all. also, final is extremely hard.
I got a 67% on the midterm, a 55% on the final, a 100% on all of the homework (worth 40%)and got a B in the class. Garcia scales the class so that 60% is solid C. Instead of going to lecture, GO TO CALVIN KAO for CLAS...you wont regret it.
By FAR the worst professor I ever had. It was impossible to understand him, there was no curve on his exam, and even my TA wasn't able to prepare me for the completely abstract and ridiculously hard final. Do NOT take him under any circumstances, wait for another professor.
Terrible. Everything that the 5A students said about him is completely true, except that he doesn't have a curve for his ridiculously difficult, not homework related, unstandardized tests. I got 100% on the homework, 90% on the midterm, and ended up with a B- in the class because the final was impossible. DO NOT TAKE HIM. You will regret it.
Lecture was boring. His explanations were too conceptual. CLAS helped me get through this class. HW is long and redundant, but it's well worth it since it's 40% of your grade.
Garcia's lectures were utterly useless. I went to about 3 or 4 of them total. Do CLAS with Calvin Kao (if he's still doing it) - he got me an A in the class. Tests are hard, be prepared to know conceptual stuff beyond the scope of the homework. Good curve though and 40% homework grade. Some homeworks were long but expedited with Mathematica/Maple.
All around horrible professor. Lectures were unclear and impossible to follow, the HW was often redundant, and the tests were just poor. Most likely aware of his obvious shortcomings, he did institute a ridiculous curve, with 50% being a C-, and HW counting for 40% of your grade. You'll pass, but will have trouble grasping the concepts.
ONE question in the midterm = 0 pts for most of students a LOT of hw nd his lecture notes are helpless for either HW or TEST No curve either. Can't understan d professors that gives theorical based question including proving(it was 1/3 of the midterm grade...) I would take a quarter off of math nd take it with another professor if i had the chance
His lectures and notes are completely useless. Many students stopped showing up to class and went to CLAS instead. Every quarter, he has a midterm with one question in which he gives most people a zero.
His lectures do not prepare you for the test. I recommend that students attend CLAS instead.
Not a bad teacher, but not a good one. Tends to speak over your head most of the time and thrives on abstract explanation. Considering 3C is my first math class with any abstract thought, it was a bit of a struggle. But his presentations are rigid and structured, so if you work hard and use the TAs, you won't die.
This professor is imposible to follow in class. I never learned anything from him. The TA was the most helpful and was the reason I got through the course. I felt that he would have done a better job of teaching the course. Also, there were problems on the exams that we had never covered. When the class protested, he didn't care.
