Awesome guy, he is one of the best math professors here. I learned so much in a quarter than an entire semester of math I learned in my cc. This is the professor you need that can guide you to academic success.
All of these people giving him poor reviews from Math 2A, there is a reason you are taking precalculus in college. Matt Porter is an excellent professor. Unfortunately during Fall Quarter, Matt wasn't able to teach at quite his full potential, but I could really tell that he is a great guy and teacher. Wish I could take him again.
Material is different than all of the other lower div math classes. Taking it with Porter made it a smoother transition and always had examples that he went through with us carefully.
Amazing. His lectures are straightforward and exam questions will almost always replicate his lecture examples. His grading goes by homework (70% of your grade), 2 midterms and 1 final (all 3 exams being 10% of your grade). Hw is graded by completeness/correctness so as long as you do hw you're already good for an A. Please give this man a raise.
My favorite math teacher in UCSB. Clear organization of the courses. Acceptable loads HW. Quiz and final are pretty basic and easy if you put enough efforts in his lecture, HW and materials.
Porter is a really nice professor. His exams are really easy, as long as you follow along the lecture and homework, you can get an A. He's also really considerable, you can discuss with him if any problem came up, and he would even adjust his grading scale according to the situation.
Professor Porter is amazing - he really wants you to succeed. Stay on top of the homework, use unstuckstudy ai for study prep, and you'll ace this class. Lectures are super helpful, and he's very accommodating.
Matt literally just mumbles to himself and doesn't teach. He uses examples but doesn't really explain how to do them. I've given up going to class and just went to CLAS because it was so much more helpful. He always cancels class and is always "under the weather". Just do the homework, study the review problems really hard and you will pass.
One of the best Professors that I've had so far. He is very caring and clearly explains what is going to be on the exams. Do all the HW's and you will be able to get a good grade in the class.
This is the greatest math teacher to ever exist. He deserves everything he has ever wanted, everything his heart desires. He wants you to succeed so badly and gives you every opportunity to do so. If you fail it is quite literally on you. Do your homework and have a good note card for the test, you will get a 100% I can guarantee it.
amazing came thru in the end to cancel our final and extended all homework, understands students really well
Porter was extremely accommodating to his students, adjusting the grading scale when needed. Grades were based on weekly webwork homework, 2 exams, and one final. The workload was very manageable and he had frequent office hours if you had any questions. Lectures were very informative. He had a very dry humor which made class interesting and fun.
Love Porter! Had him for Math 34A and now Math 34B. For both classes, he adjusted the syllabus so that homework is weighed more than the exams. Not only that, but he also gives students an extra point boost in their overall grade. No doubt, he is the best professor I've had through out my first year in college.
He is so kind. Go to lectures!! Matt really cares about his students. Would definitely take again and will always preach about THE matt porter.
He's an absolute legend. I had him for 34A & B. I'm HORRID at math, and ended both classes with an A. He really listens to his students, and his Dad jokes during lecture are adorable. Don't take any other math professor but him, I promise you're going to regret choosing that 11am math over his 8am. I promissssse.
Porter is truly such an amazing professor who cares a lot about his students. He always prioritizes his student's concerns and safety above all else and will listen and adjust to any feedback given. Highly recommend taking his class.
Porter was an amazing professor who cares a lot about his students. He takes everyones concerns into consideration and adjusts accordingly. Class is really easy as long as you are caught up with lectures.
I love Matt Porter. best professor ever, please take his class. Two midterms and a final.
Grades super easy, and helps with any problems you may have.
I have never had a professor who cares about his students more than Matt Porter. Not only did he rearrange the syllabus for this class(after being requested) so the tests would be worth less than the homework, but he also canceled the final exam because the student felt unsafe on campus. Go to lectures and you'll get an A.
Porter does not make attendance mandatory and posts all lecture notes online. He does cancel lectures quite a bit, but again, all notes are posted online. Overall, he shows that he cares for his students and will change the grade weights to benefit them. Porter is a great guy, and I would definitely recommend taking one of his classes.
Everything is posted online. I only went to lecture maybe 4 times during the quarter. 2 midterms and a final which he lets you bring cheat sheets to all. There's homework due every week but you can honestly get by using chatgpt for each question. He's a nice dude but so boring, class was super easy tho and he has a very generous curve at the end.
Not the best lecturer, but works with all students to do well, he is really compassionate. Just go to office hours for both your TA and him, and you will be fine. His review packets for tests are harder than the real one, use those and note problems, and CLAS practice tests to study.
i had porter for math 34a/b. i find that his lectures weren't super clear and his teaching can be a bit confusing at times. but, i did the CLAS tutoring sessions they were super helpful, and made the course much clearer. porter is also a lenient grader and is very understanding, also incorporated a huge grade curve at the end of the quarter.
