Class is a joke. Lectures are boring/hard to understand. Often cancels lecture or doesn't show so I never made the effort to go. Weekly webwork hw is annoying but easy if you watch the lecture videos from a different prof. Still did well on the exams and you get to use a 3x5 card. Randomly changed the grading week 10 but made it easier to pass
goes rlly fast in lecture. but the tests are really easy
Before taking this course, I used to love math, HOWEVER, Matt Porter made me hate calculus and anything it had to offer. Although it was my first time taking a calculus course, Porter made it 100 times harder to understand and made me dread going to class. In short, if you are looking to pass Math 2A with a good grade, DO NOT take Matt Porter.
A professor that provides different aspects to think about the questions and concepts. Though sometimes it's a "trust me, it works" scenario, but he did the proofs and canceled all the doubts. Unfortunately he had some family issues to deal with during my quarter, which forced him to cancel a lot of classes. I would like to take more of his class.
Amazing professor. Pay attention in his lectures but he posts his notes anyway. Exams are exactly like the practice exams so make sure to do the review.
terrible, seriously. his lectures are monotone and just examples, no real explanations of how to do the work. i spent a majority of the class teaching myself. the homework took hours but at least it was a good cushion for grading. he curves the grades at the end a lot but that doesn't change the fact that his teaching abilities are nonexistent
His lectures are equivalent to a double dose of valium, he makes no effort to explain topics clearly and basically just whisper mumbles through a few irrelevant examples. He cancels class pretty often, and on multiple occasions he just did not show up to class, forcing 100 students to get out of bed at 8am and come to class for no reason.
I really liked Matt. I took him for Math 2A this fall quarter, and was surprised about how easy the subject was. It was most of the things covered in my Highschool AP Calculus AB class, so the content is not too challenging. If you do the Webworks (weekly assignments), you already secure yourself a C. The rest is really on your test performances.
Porter cares about his students. If you put in the work, you'll get an A - simple as that.
I never went to lecture and still did fine. The exams were pretty reflective of the practice tests so it was easy to cram right before the tests. Weekly webwork homeworks which were pretty annoying but not that bad. Huge curve added at the end of the course which was awesome. He just wants everyone to do well
I never went to lecture he uploads vids of another prof that are easier to follow along. Weekly webworks were so hard but u can do as many times as needed to get full credit. 2 midterms, 1 final all insanely easy compared to webworks. Section attendance mandatory. Not the best at teaching but he seems nice and the class was easy so
Could not comprehend a single thing Professor Porter said during lecture. Stopped showing up after the first midterm. He grades fairly and is a kind person; however, he mumbles his words and you literally cannot understand what he is saying. Go to CLAS. TA Emily will get you through this class.
Honestly hes pretty chill. This class is more of a reflection of you. Put in the work? Good grade. Dont go to class/look at notes? Dont get a good grade. I did less than the bare minimum and got a B so its pretty chill. Just be sure to study cause if you miss 1 thing it stacks.
His lectures may be boring at times as he only goes over problems and speaks softly, but was helpful to understand when it comes to preparing for midterms and the final. His exams were fair as he graded them based on effort and accuracy and gives a curve at the end if we show exordinary effort. Overall, chill professor that made course fairly mid.
You would have to attend his classes to understand material. His teaching style is very boring, he only does problem examples to teach you (I learned best this way so it was easy for me). His practice exams are somewhat like his exams but shaped differently. He is a very nice teacher, just attend lectures and do homework.
Very boring class, so I stopped showing up after the first week. However, Porter is such a nice professor and very accommodating with making up grades. One of few professors who truly wants you to succeed.
Material is different than all of the other lower div math classes. Taking it with Porter made it a smoother transition and always had examples that he went through with us carefully.
My favorite thing about him as a prof is the way his notes are laid out. They're so organized and "fill in the blank" style. He is generous with his grading scale. Also very sweet and makes silly jokes :) He explains very well and goes through every little step. Answers all questions until we understand it completely.
The most BORING professor ever in the history of professor ever. I stopped going to class after the first week and had to study everything on my own
After week 1 I never showed up to lecture and only attended section, and a day before the midterms and finals I just watched the lecture videos he posted online and managed to get a B. Only attendance that matters is section as it is 5% of your grade. Prof Porter is a chill dude but his lectures are kind of boring so thats why I would not attend.
Great personality as a person but as a teacher, horrible! Most class materials in comparison to hw and tests insanely different. Literally whispered into the mic and doesn't really teach the materials. Go through practice problems really quickly I can barely keep up w/ copy, not to mention understand materials. Best bet is TA, math lab and CLAS.
Good professor (im kinda stupid but still got a B+). He bumped my grade up 2% no idea how that's even legal but he did it. His voice is so smooth and silky it puts you to sleep. I downloaded some of his lecture videos and listen to him explain homogenous systems of differential equations when I cant sleep. Would take him again.
Good professor overall. If you put in the work and study the HWs & study guides, you can get an A. He is pretty quiet during lectures but he posts video recordings of them online for his students (I found it most effective studying with this instead of actually going to lecture.) I would love to take his class once again if I had the chance.
Porter really cares about his students, was always trying to accommodate and help out when he could. He spoke pretty quietly and the exam reviews were much more difficult than the actual exams but overall a really kind professor and the class is doable if you do the homework.
