The class is nothing you expect, its more the science of language. At the beginning it is really tough, but after a few assignments you understand what is expected. Definitely go to office hours of TAs or you will be screwed on assignments. Kennedy isn't too helpful. Assignments are 40% of your grade. Not an easy class, midterm is really specific.
He's a hit or a miss. Some students love him while others don't find his lectures to be interesting. The workload is do-able. Definitely go to Office hours for hw help. He's very passionate about linguistics. I think he's a great and supportive professor for the department! :)
Kennedy leads a very fun class. He shows entertaining video clips (SNL, stand-up comedy, etc) to demonstrate what he is teaching about. He material is usually interesting because it is so immediately applicable to everyday life. Online readings instead of textbook (which aren't required), barely any homework.
Kennedy is not very friendly and never wants to hand you answers, even if it would be part of an explanation. He is pretty condescending. For this class, do the reading (really), attend lecture, and section. They do not do a good job explaining the assignments, but go with gut feelings and try to get points. Asngmts are useful in learning material.
Ling20 The material is harder than expected; if I wasn't interested in linguistics I would have hated it. Assignments are worth 40% of the grade and they usually aren't explained that well, but practice assignments are gone over in section. He is very wary of grade grubbers, and therefore can be unhelpful when asked questions. I enjoyed the class
This class was interesting and fun at times. Overall wasn't entirely difficult. Tests consisted of long answer reiterations of notes from lecture and there was a study guide for both the midterm and final.
Professor Kennedy is very clear and straightforward. To get an A, you need only to be able to re-articulate the arguments and descriptions made in class. The homework assignments are very entertaining, there is NO textbook which is bomb, and the final project was easy. pay attention in class = A
Kennedy is simply a funny guy. His lectures are always fascinating and to lighten the mood he peppers them with movie clips and funny pictures/cartoons. A VERY easy class with assignments being simplistic and tests consisting of 20 multiple questions and 4 free response questions, only 3 of which need to be done. & the TA's are pretty cool.
This class is more difficult than one would think. Material is tough, but not impossible. Section is not mandatory but is very helpful. Assignments are worth 50% so put effort into it and don't miss any. Kennedy doesn't give the best definitions but he is a decent teacher. Tests are very fair.
He's a kinda goofy guy, and be goes through lectures as fast as he can talk. Fairly difficult and involved class, but it's the subject matter and not the prof. Go to class everyday, do all the assignments, do all the reading, and you should be fine.
Great teacher really into his subject and made it interesting and relevant to the class. The assignments are easy and there's only one paper due at the end of the quarter. I highly recommend him and this class.
Great professor, fair and clear. He's the nerdy and kinda goofy type, but really funny and really helpful. I wasn't looking forward to the class at all, but he made it totally enjoyable and one of my favorite classes at UCSB. I would definitely take another class from him.

This guy knows what he is doing. His presentations are crystal clear and easy to digest. He lightens up the class with a few videos from youtube that pertain to the course material. Funny funny. Valerie the TA was really good too.
Class was pretty boring, mostly common sense with a few exceptions. Professor Kennedy (who insists you call him Dr. Kennedy) was just weird. He seemed stuck up at first, but he made a lot of random jokes. Go to class to sign attendance sheet, but sit in the back so you can fall asleep.
