Prof Moak is hilarious and makes learning a new language fun! He genuinely cares about his students and I want to take an upper div with him next quarter!
It's so clear that he cares about his students. I've taken an endless amount of french courses but this is the first one where he actually made grammar rules make sense. He will laugh with you instead of laughing at you, I usually hate speaking up and participating but his lectures were more of a brief review then followed by a class discussion.
This class is hard as hell.
Great prof. Very entertaining and full of life during his lectures. Content is not the most interesting but he finds a way to make it interesting. One midterm and one final pretty easy and graded very fairly. Overall a good class.
One of the most teachers ever. Lectures were whatever, he grades the final paper kinda tough, but it's reasonable.
Great Professor! This was my second time taking one of his classes and I just love the vibe he gives off. Easy assignments and open ended essay final. Just go to lecture and you'll be fine.
I LOVED him. Lots of reading but they were super interesting. It's alright if you fall behind there were only two pop quizzes (unbelievably easy) and an online midterm. He's funny, his lectures are easy to follow and he posts the slides beforehand... Definitely recommend!
David is the sweetest professor ever and genuinely cares about his students and getting them interested in the lecture material and books read. There is no homework aside from a midterm/final paper that he helped a lot for, and all you have to do in the class is readings that are genuinely interesting.
David is such an engaging lecturer with a witty sense of humor that isn't painful to listen to. He's a professor that actually cares about his students. He takes time to understand students' schedules and is very accommodating for the midterm (gives you a whole day to do them). 10/10 would take his class again.
He doesn't give grade. All grades are given by TAs. As afrontmentioned by another student, his lectures are boring, but his grading is fair and is not related to your final grade to a great extent. After all he is a nice professor who turned mid term into take home exam just because something went wrong with the submission.
Quite possibly the worst lecturer I've ever had. Extremely monotonous and the content was wildly boring. Either no one showed up or slept during the lectures. Had to go through LOOPS to get an extension on the final paper... Otherwise, midterm and final are graded fairly and other than that, there was no homework. Section attendance mandatory.
Prof. Moak is pretty solid and I don't understand all the really negative reviews. He's a pretty nice guy and wants people to do well in his class. His lectures can be pretty boring, but interesting if you enjoy history (slides are packed). Readings can also be long and boring. Work load consisted of weekly forum posts, 2 essay midterm and final.
I had Moak for HIST 123C during Fall '20. The course was remote but I felt that I learned a lot anyway. Moak structures the course perfectly and his lectures were easy to understand. There were two essays in the course which had fairly easy topics. In addition, there was a discussion board that I viewed as pointless but it not difficult.
As English is my second language, this class requires tremendous time for me to read and understand, and it requires some self-studying. However, the professor is very nice and caring. two papers, no midterm/final.
cool
Super engaging lectures and it's clear he cares about his students and wants them to do well. Likes when people participate, even if they make mistakes. Accessible outside of class to go over feedback and has a lot of resources for studying grammar and vocab. Really goes above and beyond. Enjoyed French 3 and 4, and looking forward to French 5!
Doctor Moak is the best professor at ucsb. He makes every class easier just because he truly explains everything in a way that's easy to understand. I have had other professors who are also highly educated but no one as humble and passionate as Dr Moak.
I genuinely didn't like this class at all. Participation is a big part of the grade yet he won't give full credit even if you participate every class, even if its multiple times each class. Tough grader and seems to use the least convenient ways of explaining grammar, literally chatgpt simplified it SO MUCH and way better... Not a fan.
Enjoyable, knowledgeable, and tries to be funny with (mostly) updated memes. Gayen is very willing to work with you thru any issues or problems in the class.
Professor Moak is very passionate about this class and its topic and this really shows in his lectures. I think this class is a very doable writing elective for non-French or comp lit majors and is interesting to anyone unfamiliar with the topic.
He is such a great lecturer the best one I've had at UCSB. There is a midterm and a final take home paper very fair grader and the midterm has a study guide that is extremely helpful for test.
pretty funny and was a good prof! he teaches fast so be prepared to keep up. also calls on ppl alot but doesnt get mad when youre wrong so dont be afraid to raise your hand
Great professor, funny and explained concepts pretty well. I found the participation grade to be harsh and I was unclear on how to improve it, but I could've used of a few opportunities I missed, extra credit and office hours. Also not great at responding to my emails, but overall a super enjoyable class though. Only 10am I think Id look forward to
Took him for Global 1 when i first transferred here. Very clear instructions for the midterm and final. Funny guy lowk and pretty good lectures
