Not very helpful in office hours, started to prove a proof and got lost trying to prove his own proof. First midterm was doable with 5 proofs total, and he asked you to prove one. For the second midterm, he made us learn 26 proofs and put 2/26 on the midterm. Class is pure memorizing, lecture goes over one proof a day (far too slow). Do not take.
Maybe he is a good teacher in other classes but avoid 102a with him at all costs. Gives A1 lectures but too bad he only give 3. Spends 35 of 50 minutes having students solve one problem then spends the remaining 15 not being able to finish his own proof. Out of 45+ proofs, his tests will ask you to prove 2 or 3 of them. Class is pure memorization.
Just use the methods he taught you and be careful in tests. He's lecture is clear. You don't need to understand why the procedure works. Students with a good mathematics intuition may find this course easy.
BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD AT UCSB! Very Clear! He cares and wants you to understand the material!
The best professor I have had at UCSB so far. He explains everything clearly and thoroughly. I would love to take another class with him again.
Ograin knows how to teach lower div math students! His lectures are very helpful and not tedious. As long as you go to every lecture and actually pay attention, there is no way you can possibly fail. Tests are very fair and he gives very generous partial credits. Homework was 1 question per week, which only took like 2030 minutes.
Honestly one of the best math professors I've ever head, he allowed students to work through problems during lecture and was always there to help. Lectures were clear and understandable, homework was manageable. I wish I could talk all my math classes with Ograin.
He's a god, super clear lectures, the only professor I've had at UCSB where it wasn't even necessary to read the textbook. As long as you do problems, you'll do fine
Dude was pretty chill. If you went to get help he would definitely be there to help. Class wasn't too bad besides the fact that I still don't really know what group theory is used for. Overall a good professor for this class though, especially because he is very easy to understand.
It is very important to go to class. If you miss one day you'll be behind. Homework was graded easily. One midterm and one final that were graded fairly. Ograin likes group work so expect to work in teams during class. I truly enjoyed this class and professor.
2 midterms and a final. There were only 6 homework assignments that weren't bad. Even though it was confusing at first I enjoyed lectures. Prof is a great teacher and had OH as well as a study session the day before hw was due that way we could ask him questions or collaborate. Final was TOUGH because of all the info you had to remember but doable.
Useless professor, will not help/guide on proofs at all and makes it a point to be as lazy as possible. Students must do all work, study, present on the board, correct board presentations, and if you don't know the answer, sadly he doesn't either. every question gets "that could work" or "I'm not positive, but maybe" and you'll never actually learn
Amazing teacher! Explains everything in detail and with clarity. Will work with you for as long as it takes until you 100% understand the material. I'm a junior, and he has so far been the best teacher I've had at UCSB.
He knows what he's talking about and makes all the material pretty easy to understand. He does really long proofs that end up being irrelevant. If you like that then you'll like him. If you don't, then that's a couple minutes you can space out. The homework was all online and you had infinite attempts. i didn't even buy the textbook and managed.
I didn't like math until he taught it. Best professor I've ever had at UCSB, he actually helps you so much, I didnt even need my textbook that much. His tests are super easy, almost like the example problems he gives in class, If you need to pass math3a or 3b, take him, he is the easiest professor out of all of them.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had! Easy to understand, willing to help, and tells you exactly what will be on the midterms and the final. Overall great class and awesome professor.
Super friendly professor...such a sweetheart. His son was the cutest thing! Back to the important stuff though...Great professor, willing to help, cares deeply for the success of his students, solid curve. HE WILL MAKE YOU ENJOY MATH...beware
this is my ultimate favorite professor! even all my other friends who took him also love the way he teaches. he makes everything easy and if you go to his office hours you will see he is both helpful and nice!
Extremely helpful. Very concise in explanation. WANTS his students to well. Puts in extra effort to assure that students understand material. Definitely best teacher I've ever had in my academic career. His tests are hard but they're pretty reasonable and fair.
He really explains everything, is clear, and is a cool guy. The midterms/final are reasonable, do problems in the book.
Phenomenal professor that clearly and concisely taught the material. I strongly dislike math and he made it worthwhile. One of the best math teachers I have ever had.
Ograin is an awesome teacher. He gives you clear examples that allow you to understand every type of problem. Best math teacher I have ever had.
good professor, if you attend class and explain your work throughly on the midterms and finals you will prevail!
A very good teacher that makes the course really easy and straight forward to understand. He is also really helpful and responds to my email questions very quickly. Exams were straightforward, no unexpected tricky parts. Everything had been told to us before hand, so there were no suprises. Just do all the set homework and you'll do well.
