Dr. Matoza is super knowledge in his field, and that shows in his lectures. Most of our class time was spent deriving equations that helped us understand the fundamentals of what we are working on during lab sections. There are no exams for this class, but that means you should dedicate your time into the labs to earn a good grade.

He's very passionate about geology and explains concepts well. The weekly labs/quizzes are very reasonable. The final was harder than expected, considering that most students take this as an easy GE, but Eilon gave a very generous curve on both the midterm and final. I had a great time in this class, despite how uninteresting I find geology to be.

He's very passionate about geology, which makes lectures more interesting. All of the information you need to know is taught during lectures, too, so be sure to attend. Midterm and final are difficult but curved, and labs are pretty easy if you have a decent TA. Would recommend! I learned A LOT from this class, I'm a proper rock aficionado now :D

Dont take this for a GE-- the labs are so much work for this class to be considered "easy". The TAs have no idea what's going on and cant answer ur questions. labs need to be dialed down, even my TA said that she doesn't understand why the labs are so difficult/so much work considering most kids take this for a GE. Stay away unless you have to

I'm in my 5th quarter at UCSB and Eilon is hands-down the best prod I've had in every aspect. Amazing and engaging lectures, actually respond to emails (doesn't give you some BS), and a courseload that is respectful of his students' lives. He treats his student's questions as intelligent (even if they're not) and I really looked up to him.

Best professor I have had in the past 2 years at UCSB. Very knowledgeable and explains things very well. If you are interested in geology then it is an easy A because the work he assigns is actually interesting and doesn't feel painstaking.

Optional midterm, mcq. Weekly homework -- some math! Weekly extra credit for up to 7% on total class grade. Attended section/lecture 1 time each. Stopped attending lecture because prof is very hard to understand -- spoke very quickly w strong accent + lisp. Otherwise highly recommend!! Best science GE for humanities majors :)

Engaging lectures, open note tests, weekly labs instead of section, one field trip late in the quarter, no homework or textbook reading. Just show up and pay attention

Had Professor Eilon for Earth 2, the class is really chill, basically no homework except for a weekly quiz which you can retake as many times you want, and all other work is done during the lab. His lectures are really interesting and he does a great job at explaining all the material.

All of the course content is covered in lectures which parallel the optional textbook. Weekly "quizzes" have an unlimited number of attempts, exams are open notes, and labs are collaborative. Speaks at a clear volume, uses diagrams to aid understanding, shares slideshows before class, and uses everyday analogies to explain concepts.

Zach is a really cool prof and he does his best to get the students to understand. There are labs every week, but TAs are more than willing to help you out if you ask. It's best to check them out beforehand to know what you're getting into. The 2 midterms are a bit of a crunch on time but the final does get better which are all open notes. Amazing!

Pretty cool class! Lectures can get a bit information-heavy and dry at times but overall, a solid choice for a GE. Professor Matoza is super knowledgeable in his field as well. Grading was clear and assignments are manageable!

Professor Matoza is great. His lectures are super clear and concise, and he gets right to the point. He derives a lot of equations, which I think is super helpful, and shows you where he gets all of his information. The labs were pretty dense (lots of hours of work), but they were really cool and applicable to real-life geophysical problems.

Professor Eilon is awesome! He's incredibly smart, concise, and caring. His class structure was super organized and all of his assignments were clear. He really wants students to succeed and will help you to do it. His lectures are really understandable-- he provides a lot of great analogies-- and he's really easy-going. Totally recommend.

I see why its necessary for earth majors to learn that much, but dont take it if youre looking for an easy GE. There is a lot of work. But he seemed to really care about his students and his lectures were interesting. Exams were fair as well.

COVID, online. Professor Eilon is very friendly, his lectures are fun but there are just too many of them (around 10-15 per week, 10-20 min each). I ended up doing P/NP because the exams were close booked and there were just too many terms. Took this for GE. Interesting contents, interesting teaching. Grade mainly depends on tests and labs.

Prof Eilon seems like a nice guy. His lectures, although heavy, are very interesting if you enjoy learning about geology. Take good notes because the tests are not easy. The labs are long and work heavy. There is also a field trip which is interesting but also another thing to worry about. Pre-labs and lab reports were quite annoying for a GE.

He set up his online course very well, and was easily accessible and understanding. A lot of work was required, but I've never learned as much in a GE course as I did in this one. An amazing professor, I would recommend taking one of his courses to everyone!

One of the best professors I've ever had! His class is definitely difficult but he teaches so well and makes the class very fun. a true KING

As someone who is not a science or math person, this class was unbearable. I took it thinking it would be an INTRO level class like it was stated but soon began to suspect that no one informed the professor. The labs were hardly related to the materials learned in class. If you want to do well, you HAVE to research on your own outside of the class.

THIS MAN IS AN ABSOLUTE KING. I took his class during Spring 2020 when classes were online due to covid. He adjusted the class very well and I'm sure his in-person class would've been even better. The content isn't too hard but you have to put in the work. His lectures were very clear and he breaks down the material very well.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! His Earth 2 class was so amazing, he is an amazing prof who can really capture your attention during lectures. He is so good at articulating and making the material easy to understand, and has really good powerpoints. The tests are not difficult if you take notes in lecture and study them. I grew to love geology because of him

You can tell he's passionate about his work and loves to share. His lectures are interesting/informative, but not too overwhelming. The class was intriguing(not to mention the easiest class I've taken at UCSB). Took no notes and never opened the book, just showed up to lecture and paid attention (most of the time); tests are super straight forward.

His lectures are very interesting! He is very patient. His exams are not very easy, but students can get good grades in the lab ( 30% of the final grade ). There is a field trip on weekend! So much fun! Take his class if you can! Great experience!
