He's very passionate about geology and explains concepts well. The weekly labs/quizzes are very reasonable. The final was harder than expected, considering that most students take this as an easy GE, but Eilon gave a very generous curve on both the midterm and final. I had a great time in this class, despite how uninteresting I find geology to be.
He's very passionate about geology, which makes lectures more interesting. All of the information you need to know is taught during lectures, too, so be sure to attend. Midterm and final are difficult but curved, and labs are pretty easy if you have a decent TA. Would recommend! I learned A LOT from this class, I'm a proper rock aficionado now :D
Dont take this for a GE-- the labs are so much work for this class to be considered "easy". The TAs have no idea what's going on and cant answer ur questions. labs need to be dialed down, even my TA said that she doesn't understand why the labs are so difficult/so much work considering most kids take this for a GE. Stay away unless you have to
I'm in my 5th quarter at UCSB and Eilon is hands-down the best prod I've had in every aspect. Amazing and engaging lectures, actually respond to emails (doesn't give you some BS), and a courseload that is respectful of his students' lives. He treats his student's questions as intelligent (even if they're not) and I really looked up to him.
Best professor I have had in the past 2 years at UCSB. Very knowledgeable and explains things very well. If you are interested in geology then it is an easy A because the work he assigns is actually interesting and doesn't feel painstaking.
Engaging lectures, open note tests, weekly labs instead of section, one field trip late in the quarter, no homework or textbook reading. Just show up and pay attention
Had Professor Eilon for Earth 2, the class is really chill, basically no homework except for a weekly quiz which you can retake as many times you want, and all other work is done during the lab. His lectures are really interesting and he does a great job at explaining all the material.
All of the course content is covered in lectures which parallel the optional textbook. Weekly "quizzes" have an unlimited number of attempts, exams are open notes, and labs are collaborative. Speaks at a clear volume, uses diagrams to aid understanding, shares slideshows before class, and uses everyday analogies to explain concepts.
Zach is a really cool prof and he does his best to get the students to understand. There are labs every week, but TAs are more than willing to help you out if you ask. It's best to check them out beforehand to know what you're getting into. The 2 midterms are a bit of a crunch on time but the final does get better which are all open notes. Amazing!
Professor Eilon is awesome! He's incredibly smart, concise, and caring. His class structure was super organized and all of his assignments were clear. He really wants students to succeed and will help you to do it. His lectures are really understandable-- he provides a lot of great analogies-- and he's really easy-going. Totally recommend.
I see why its necessary for earth majors to learn that much, but dont take it if youre looking for an easy GE. There is a lot of work. But he seemed to really care about his students and his lectures were interesting. Exams were fair as well.
COVID, online. Professor Eilon is very friendly, his lectures are fun but there are just too many of them (around 10-15 per week, 10-20 min each). I ended up doing P/NP because the exams were close booked and there were just too many terms. Took this for GE. Interesting contents, interesting teaching. Grade mainly depends on tests and labs.
