Rawlings is a true 5 star professor. Engaging lectures, good structure of the course, and I thought the material was pretty interesting. This guy is a superstar prof imo and I'd love to take another course he teaches in the future. I also highly recommend Soc110 because it's not super difficult, just show up to class and you'll be in great shape.

Very fun, smart and surprisingly kind of a bro. Very Californian, if you know what I mean. He gets along well with all his students and has a fun rapport with the TA. He likes to talk about himself (and he is pretty interesting so it's not an issue!) so ask him personal questions as a cheat code to get him to like you.

Even in a class of over 100 students, he tries to know everyone's names. Really cares about the material, and makes sure students understand the stuff being taught while not giving too much pressure. Genuinely enjoyable lecturer. When he finished teaching the entire curriculum, he played music and danced to it. Great dancer too LOL

@Duke now! Easily the BEST, most INSPIRING professor I have ever had! Rawlings is absolutely amazing, and it is a blessing to take this class! You WANT to attend lectures because they are fascinating, hilarious, and magical! He is the nicest person you'll meet and accessible out of class. Rawlings changed my life in Soc, and he'll change yours too!

Light workload and interesting lectures. You don't have to read the readings for lectures but only for discussions, but you can still participate without reading all. There is only 1 midterm, 1 short paper, and 1 final, which are all very manageable. Strongly recommend.

Professor Rawlings is amazing! His lectures are clear and entertaining which means that studying for tests outside of class involves only reviewing the information. Grading is very fair, and I learned a lot throughout the class about interesting topics. He does take attendance through a clicker, but this class quickly became my favorite to attend!

Rawlings is freakin awesome. He's hilarious and a genuinely good person. He makes a point to get to know everyone's name and fosters a great classroom environment. I took the class because of the MMS certificate. I really didn't expect to like it. However, I'm really glad I took it with because he made the content fun and useful. 10/10.

What a great guy! Easygoing, very funny and quirky, commands your attention. He genuinely cares about you. Lectures are clear, accessible and probably the most useful soc class at duke. He's new at duke, and I'm sure if he keeps teaching this class it's going to be one of the most popular mms classes. Absolutely necessary to take your core w/ him!

I wasn't excited to take an 8 AM class- I would gladly get up at 8 AM for these lectures. This professor is SO smart, witty, hilarious and down to earth. He explains things very clearly and the concepts are easy to understand but still so fascinating and engaging. He's great to all the students. Everyone should take his class!

An absolutely phenomenal professor! I had minimal interest coming into the class, but he was such an amazing lecturer that I looked forward to coming to class. He captivates his audience really well and his lectures are both informative and easy to follow along to. Make sure you get good notes and do the readings so that you do well in his class

One of the best professors I have had so far at UCSB. It's rare to have a professor who cares so profoundly about his students. As far as the class goes, if you do the readings, it's an easy A. He doesn't post lectures online, though, so take good notes. His lectures are outstanding, though. He is a very interesting and captivating teacher. 10/10

SOC RULES!!! So far it's the best class I've had in college. You have to take Professor Rawlings' class before you graduate from UCSB. That guy is a genius and he made this class so AMAZING! He went to Tisch and he obviously learned a lot of acting there. Only need to participate(i-clicker) 75% of the time BUT you will want to go to every lecture!

I loved Professor Rawlings. He was entertaining & made even boring material interesting since he was so enigmatic. I hardly ever missed class even though it would be easy to & still do well in the course. Definitely recommend

I like him as a person, really nice guy. But I was killed by his midterm and final. I took him because he had good ratings, but I neglect to listen to how people struggle with him. None of his lectures helped, as all were vague, it is all about getting what little info, which may be impossible, you can find in the books. Be cautious of this class.

Rawlings is a great professor. He is energetic and you can tell that he is passionate about Sociology. Make sure to read the book on schedule, otherwise you will cram and get a C+ like me. The material isn't difficult, you just have to know it and be prepared.

Professor Rawlings is very funny and has pretty interesting lectures. You do not have to go to lecture to pass the class because he pulls everything out of the book. However, i-clicker questions are always asked. Attending section is kind of a waste of time, but since is such a large portion of your grade, it's best to go if you want at least a B.

Bar none, my favorite teacher at UCSB. His passion, enthusiasm, and overall personality makes you want to go to class. Whatever class he teaches, you will leave a more well-rounded student and wanted to continue to take his classes. Always available to help and make accommodations ! Best teacher i have ever had. period.

Rawlings is hands down my favorite professor at UCSB. He has a passion for teaching and truly cares about all of his students. Midterm and final are both take home and relatively easy to do. OH, AND HE DOES HANDSTANDS, so go to lecture!

TOOK SOC 108ST with prof Rawlings. Attendance isn't mandatory but it's worth attending. 4 easy take home m/c quizzes and 2 research papers that weren't tough. Dr. Rawlings is a great professor! Funny and engaging. Loved his course. Take it I recommend. Got a B

To this day my favorite class at Santa Barbara. He made 8 am lectures fun and made an effort to get to know people personally in our huge lecture. He's the reason I decided to major in sociology and I would recommend taking any class he teaches!
