Prof. Roberts is a great teacher if you're patient with him. Unfortunately he has a boring voice and struggles with technology, but he makes a clear effort to engage with his students. I recommend going to his office hours and getting to know him. This class is very simple if you pay attention and study a little before the two exams. I recommend.
He is so boring. Graded on an 8 page paper, and midterm and final which are all essay questions. Very time consuming to study for everything and really boring GE class that it's unbearable.
I loved Dr Roberts the class was not hard at all considering he pulls test questions directly from the study guides. There was one 8 page research paper but we had a month to do it and got to choose between multiple prompts. Def recommend
I enjoyed Roberts's lectures and thought he was fun to listen to. There were weekly lecture quizzes (with stuff only said at lecture so you should go), an 1800-word paper, a map you fill out, a midterm, and a final. The study guides given for the midterms and finals have the exact questions on the exam so if you study you will be fine.
The class is boring, but if you're looking for an easy GE def take this class. For the tests, he puts out a study guide and picks questions from it. There is an 8-page paper that takes some work, but only for about a week. You can get by without doing any of the reading from the textbook or PDFs (usually a lot). Roberts is also a genuinely nice guy
history is boring, but he made it tolerable because he was clear on his expectations. one midterm, an 8 page paper, and the final (gives study guides with exact questions). weekly quizzes which are 95% from the slides. I have never once read the book or the pdfs he gave us and I currently have an A, and will probably end with it too. easy GE
Although there was readings that are interesting you don't have to read them fully. But if you want an A do the reading you learn a lot. His lectures are really easy to follow and he specifically explains what he expects on midterms and finals.
Extremely boring. His lectures are given in monotone causing people to fall asleep all throughout the class. People stopped showing up after week 3. Would cause me to leave class midway because he is so exhausting. Expects you to have prior knowledge. Moves through topics extremely quickly. One 8 page paper. Midterm and final.
Great professor!
Witty professor who tries his best to make the class more lively. Aside from being easily accessible outside of class, he gives you amazing study guides for both the midterm and final. (Aka the tests come directly from the study guide questions!) Easy A, and the most enjoyable a history class can get!
Perfect GE! Lectures can get a bit boring but content is interesting enough. Discussion section is mandatory, and counts for participation. The in-lecture review of the previous lecture is extremely helpful. Manageable readings, textbook is good for background but not necessary. He pulls midterm and final questions from a study guide he gives out.
The class could be bit dry at times, and relied a lot on the readings. He pulls questions for the midterm and final directly from the study guides, so just make sure to be thorough. Weekly homework assignments that took 10 minutes or less and an 1800 word paper. Overall a good GE.
He literally gives out a super thorough study guide for all the test. (all the question asked will be on the study guide but the study guide has way more questions than the actual test) so if you study well enough, it's an easy A. Essay grade really depends on the TA. He is a funny dude. If you want a GE for credit, take his class!
Really great class! The textbook readings are really interesting and help a lot with understanding the information for tests. The study guides are basically the tests, just require a lot of time and effort to complete. Professor Roberts really cares about teaching and helping his students. Lecture is very important for completing study guide.
Prof Roberts is pretty knowledgeable but not very organized. His power point slides are kinda a bit here and there and the materials were boring at times. He also spent too much time reviewing the previous lecture. Sections are extremely important because it's 30% of your grade so it depends on your TA really and you have to talk. Not a bad class.
His lectures were a bit dry at times. I also felt that he spent just a little too much time reviewing, but overall it was interesting. I am probably one of the few people that found the reader to be fascinating as well. I loved this class.
Roberts is amazing! I know that most people are doing decent without attending lectures, but I definitely recommend it. He's approachable and willingly admits when he doesn't know information. He provides study guides for both the midterm and final. Very fair grader! Amazing class!
His class is interesting but kind of boring. He is a really nice guy and cares about the things he teaches. One Midterm 2 papers and 1 final, its pretty fair grading
Overall it was a pretty easy class. One midterm, he gives out a study guide that is exactly like the actual test, two papers and a final that is a little bit harder than the midterm. It's not your ordinary history class though, so be prepared to analyze and hypothesize.
I took this class in Fall 2024 and I thought Roberts was an excellent professor overall. His only flaw is that it can sometimes be unclear what you're supposed to gleam from his powerpoint presentations. Other than that, a manageable workload (weekly quizzes + 3 short essays) and a take-home final made this a perfectly doable upper division class.
This is my 4th class with Prof Roberts; he is an awesome professor who is very willing to help. If you complete the readings and attend lectures, you will do well. Workload was a one-page paper due every week, 3 open note quizzes, and a final 9-page research paper (he helps a lot and gives detailed feedback on draft). Go to his office hours!
I LOVE PROF. ROBERTS. Easily one of the most passionate profs ever. I loved taking his class (now taken 2). The layout of the class is great, and the assignments are reasonable. One page every week, but I liked it because it kept me on track with reading. I really enjoyed the lectures because he would always bring things to "show and tell"!
Professor Roberts was great! I took his History of the Samurai class and really enjoyed the content he presented to us. He is passionate about his job and effective in his teaching! Weekly quizzes (you get 2 attempts), 3 short essays throughout the quarter, and a final exam! A little salty because his TA graded my papers harshly (hence my B+)
he genuinely cares about his material. no midterm just essay and final which was alright as long as you study. lectures were boring sometimes but hes such a sweetie. hes funny too. i liked it.
