As you probably can already tell by the other reviews, Thomas is an excellent professor. His grading was based mostly on homework and midterms/finals came straight out of his study guides making it easy if you knew how to do the study guide questions. Very caring about his students and overall great course that I would take again.
I respect and adore Thomas wholeheartedly. He is really passionate about the material and communicates it in a way that I felt was fairly easy to grasp. Grade is based on Homework, midterm, and final; No tricks and no attempt to make students fail, you are given all the resources to succeed in the class. Cannot wait to take another course with him.
T Barr has to be one the cutest, funniest, and most caring professors I have had at UCSB. Even though I have no interest in philosophy whatsoever, Barrett made it fun and interesting. Homework more than 50%, midterm/final almost equally the other weight. Study guides given for midterm and final super helpful. TAs very helpful. Easiest GE by far
Gave everyone full credit for the finals 10/10
I don't have enough good words to say about him. Easily the most charismatic, funniest, coolest, and overall best professor I've had here. The class was extremely low maintenance, the TAs were extremely helpful, and the lectures were always a blast to attend even though they were not at all mandatory. I cannot recommend enough!
He is one of the most inspiring, caring, and responsible professors I've met so far. He is very organized and knowledgeable in his teaching. I learned much more than the course materials from him since he always encourages his students to try. Take his class and you won't regret meeting such an amazing professor and person!
Thomas Barrett is genuinely one of the best professors. He love the subject and you can see it in the way he lectures. The lectures are not attendance mandatory but they're a blast to attend. There was HW due every week on Friday. Not difficult but still challenges you to think and apply the material. Overall kind and compassionate guy.
Thomas is so funny and helpful and the grading system and tests are VERY generous. If you try, you will do well.
He is indeed the most interesting professors i had class with. There is not much reading. He is good at explaining Philosophical ideas intuitively, everyone likes him, but he could do even better if: 1: make lectures more compact and concentrate (less videos and demo 2: give more insights of different philosopher 3: not playing inproper music
Best professor I've ever had. His lectures are super interesting and engaging, he is super funny and relatable and genuine. He's also super accessible outside of class and always willing to help. Highly recommend.
A king among men.
Thomas is my favorite Prof. in the department. He makes lectures interesting, and is very funny. The way the course is graded and is really straight-forward, and he makes it very easy to succeed. Even though some of the content is dense and hard to read through, he makes it interesting. He genuinely cares about his students- it's refreshing.
Do yourself a favor and take his class. I have had him as a professor many times. He is a great lecturer, funny, and so easy to talk to. 2 papers 1 final. You can have your TA read your paper before you even submit it, he gives you the final questions ahead of time. Some work is required to grasp concepts but it's easy to do well in this class!
Excellent professor, very not-condescending and super fun. You're unfortunately up to the mercy of sometimes tough TA's grading papers for 60% of your grade, but the final is very straightforward and easy. Readings useful but you could probably not do them. Up to 5% bump for section participation (nice unless your TA doesn't remember names!)
Thomas is actually the GOAT. Lectures are super important for your papers but he posts all his slides online. Final questions are all on the study guide so you just have to study it and know how to answer the questions and youll pass the final
Gets across complicated topics in philosophy using entraining examples and homemade videos. Lectures feel less like someone throwing information at you and more like you're having a group conversation. Only thing that was occasionally annoying was how often he repeats things, but that also makes sure you know what's going on.
I have taken multiple classes with Prof Barrett, and he is one of my favorites! He really makes an effort to clarify subjects that are often very difficult to grasp. His lectures are entertaining (get ready to hear lots of off-color stories about philosophers), and he is very easy to talk to. Go to office hours! He is super chill!
amazing!! possibly my favorite professor I've had at UCSB so far. he's very kind and repeats himself a lot so as to make sure the students understand the material. often makes jokes and has great stories to tell. graded on 2 papers and a final.
Professor Barrett is a gem of a professor. He is utterly unpretentious and cautious not to talk over students heads. He puts great effort into making his lectures engaging and ensures that nobody in the class in left behind. Additionally, he is the only professor I have had who goes out of their way to introduce themselves and chat with students.
Barrett is one of the best professors I've ever had! He is super clear and entertaining in lectures. He tries to make sure his students understand the concepts before he moves on (even in a large class), and all the assignments are clearly explained. He is also super helpful in office hours! If you get the chance to take one of his courses, do it!
Thomas is THE BEST Best class Ive ever taken
Super super super great guy. Really wants to watch his students succeed. His lectures are really interesting and he makes the material very easy to follow. Lays everything out in a very simple way. Be prepared to hear stories about his wife!
Thomas is easily the best Professor Ive ever had. He explains really well and makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Hes very flexible and works with everyone to make sure that the class is fair. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he is HILARIOUS. Impossible to not love him! Hes very passionate about Philosophy!
