CHEM110L . Walker F M A Month Ago

Yes, this class is a ton of work but it's unfortunately supposed to be that way, I don't think it's fully Faye's fault. Most labs were well-designed and thorough. Mistakes in the manuals but WAY fewer than last year. As usual with labs, very TA-dependent. Final was absurdly long but difficulty was reasonable. I do wish she connected with us more.

This class was insane. I have never spent so much time on a single class in my entire life. The workload is ridiculous, prof has been made well aware of how horrible this class is for her students, and she does not care one bit.

Expect to learn every concept yourself. Workload is about 6-10+ hours of writing lab reports every week. Final exam (20%) is fair. Lab report grades (60%) can depend entirely on who your TA is. She holds no office hours. Your TA will not be of your help. Effort you put in the weekly report and the grade you get can be totally out of proportions.

2 reports or 1 formal every week, scientific readings that were completely pointless. Reads directly from slides that are just recaps. no interactions with the class just rapid iClickers. Old lab manuals should be redone, full of mistakes and missing details. Overall everything takes longer than it should and is made more difficult than is needed.

Nobody takes 110L by choice, so here's some advice: this class sucks. BUT we were allowed our lab notebook on the exam. YOU'LL NEED IT unless you have a photographic memory. She will ask about very specific details from each and every lab manual on the exam. So just copy everything down, including formulas, reagents, amino acids. It gets granular.

This lab is poorly structured, and it appears that feedback from the students and TAs has not been incorporated to any degree. The work load is excessive, with as many as six lengthy assignments due a week. The procedures can be unclear and full of mistakes and need to be revised.

Way too much work. This lab has so much potential to be interesting but Faye ruins it with so many assignments. She does not care about her students or TAs. 0/10 this lab took over my life this quarter.

AWEFUL. Plenty of busywork, multiple lab reports per week. She seems nice enough but her class is unbearable with the workload. This class singlehandedly dropped my quality of life this last quarter. Also, lab reports given out week 10 and due finals week. I was stressed to get my lab reports done while also trying to study (her class and others).

This class took an excessive amount of time and was THE MOST time-consuming class I've taken at UCSB so far. It's like hazing for biochemistry majors.

As a biochem major (chem dpt.)- this is the hardest class I've ever taken. The material isn't too hard, but the workload is near impossible to keep up with while taking 2 other upper div chem classes + a GE. Think pre labs, post labs, data analysis, 2 ACS lab reports a week, + time spent in lab/studying for quizzes. Lectures aren't very helpful :(

This class is WAYYY to much work. Emphasis on the way. Lab should be more about learning new techniques and less about writing 10 page lab reports sometimes multiple times a week. I will say though, people give her a bit too much hate. She had to adapt the stuff from even worse professors before her. You got this soldier

This course was poorly designed. The lab manuals and lecture slides were full of mistakes, often resulting in confusion for us and the TA's. There is so much work and very little information for help. Unfortunately, the course cannot be avoided and the TA makes or breaks your grade. Mine was a king (thank god), but I know others were not. Good luck

This class was horribly managed, the lectures were disorganized and paced incredibly pooly. The slides were frequently full of errors, the workload of the class greatly exceeds any other class here at UCSB, and the final was full of multiple incredibly irrelevant questions that provide no benefit to the student for knowing.

it's unavoidable to take a lab class with her as the head professor if you're a biochem (chem dpt) major. have fun hating your life in this class! chem 125L gets slightly better but like barely. just get a good TA

Unarguably the worst professor of this department. She has limited understanding on biochemistry and I can teacher better than she. She has been here in UCSB since 2010 and her academic "achievements" contributed little to the field of biochemistry. If she can find a job in university, then I think everyone can.

So disorganized and unclear. Unfair policies about absences for things like medical excuses. Way too much content thrown at us at once without supplemental readings given, the manuals are messy and hard to follow.

Same as the other reviews: unorganized class, confusing lab manuals, labs are unnecessarily long, lectures are not helpful at all. Professor Walker seems to only invest the bare minimum into this course.

Faye is disorganized and disconnected from the class in general. When she lectures, it feels as if she is reading the slides for the first time. In addition, her lectures in no way make lab expectations more clear. On top of all of this, Faye lacks empathy. It seems she doesn't care about this class, and cares less about her students.

This lab series was made much more difficult than necessary due to lack of communication and confusing lab manuals. The manuals are very vague and hard to follow, and the content is not clarified by the professor. The TAs do their best but are given no assistance by the professor. Possibly the worst lab at UCSB and that's saying something.

CHEM110L . Walker F M 1 Year, 2 Months Ago

This class is very unorganized involving labs that cannot be completed during the given lab time. She does not help students succeed or empathize. TAs are just as confused as the students because she is very disconnected from the lab and only shows up to the lectures. Lab manual is copied from previous profs and is horribly written.

Professor Walker is incredibly unorganized, very bad at explaining concepts, and seems to lack the desire for her students to succeed. She is incredibly unhelpful, and there are often discrepancies between her lectures and the procedures undergone in the lab -- it is clear that she doesn't have any idea what is going on in her TA-run lab sections.
