Literally the Lebron of Profs. Easy class, interesting lectures, extremely helpful, and very personable. I genuinely don't think it's possible to be a better prof than this.
Amazing professor and his lectures are very interesting. However, the exams are pretty difficult and tricky! There's no study guide so canvas / lectures are only the guide. There's a huge paper but it just depends on your TA on the grading.
Great teacher overall; however, the grading structure does make it very hard to succeed if you miss something or don't do well on an assignment. Tests were very wordy and tricky and required a lot of studying. However, lectures were incredibly engaging and useful to the class. Just be prepared to work hard and pay attention.
Love Dr. Elder! Her lectures were so fun and she obviously cares so much about her students. 3 tests throughout the quarter but if you study the study guide given to us they are so easy. Final paper was trickier and my TA wasn't that helpful and confused me more, but I got it done eventually. I recommend for an easy GE!
Extremely nice professor who cares about her students. Her lectures were fun and engaging, and actually showed how concepts are shown in the real world. She had three quizzes, which were light, occasional writing assignments, and a 6-8 paper, which was honestly not that bad. If you want an easy GE, take her.
Grading structure makes it very hard to succeed in this class
My favorite professor so far at UCSB. She is seriously the best, and I learned so much. There is 3 tests throughtout the quarter and a big 8 page final paper. Other small assignments as well
Katie is an excellent professor. Her lectures are engaging and blend key terms with helpful videos that make concepts easy to understand. The class has three tests and one final paper, all manageable if you attend lectures. I'd gladly take another class with her.
Professor Elder was one of the best professors that I've had. The lectures were interesting, and the homework assignments were clear and not too difficult. I would highly recommend her COMM 1 class. You can tell she cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches.
Elder is a super caring professor. The first midterm was super fair for what we've learned. There's 3 noncumulative midterms and a final paper. She's super helpful to her students and makes material easy to understand
I liked Prof Lane's course and it was a class I still enjoyed based on potential learning outcomes. A midterm exam was slightly challenging, luckily, there was extra credit assigned for everyone to improve.
I took COMM 156: Health Promotion with Professor Elder and I absolutely loved the class and her. I had a lot of outside stuff going on and wasn't able to take the midterm on time and she was super flexible and understanding which I was not expecting. Her lectures are super engaging and she makes it easy to do well in the class.
She was great in Comm1. Super sweet and caring. This is the first review I have written for a professor ever. I definitely recommend her!
I LOVED Professor Lane. Yes this is a hard class but he makes it better. For the final paper, make sure to utilize your TA's for help as they are the ones who grade the papers. I ended up getting a 98 on the final paper as I used the advice given to me by my TA. Loved this class.
class involved a couple lecture videos and one in-person lecture a week (plus section). dr. lane's lectures are honestly funny and interesting, and the midterm and final exams are not difficult as long as you actually watch the lecture vids.
Dan lane is the best comm 89 professor! the class is still difficult but posts the lectures on canvas and an easy quiz in class every week. Midterm and final in class. 1 Essay. Love Dan Lane!
Not a good prof, lecture videos arent very helpful & class lectures arent posted so you really have to listen to gain information, which is difficult if you're a visual/hands-on learner. He was insanely inaccessible & if you had a question, he would dismiss you & tell you to talk to the TA. Like dude, YOURE the professor. Overall, did not like him.
Katie is the best professor I have had in my entire college career. She is a fantastic lecturer, she is engaging, funny, interesting, and does a great job integrating course material into conversations of real world situations. She's extremely knowledgeable and is very eager to chat with students. Take her classes! She's the best.
The final and m.t were insanely hard. The grades received were unexpected for amount of studying for these tests. No study guides at all "canvas is your study guide". Was accessible up until one week before the final and the essay, understandable but not responding when students need last min help isn't chill. Start studying WEEKS prior to tests.
Lane is probably the best prof I've had at UCSB! Though, his tests are very hard and require lots of preparation. He is a great lecturer and is super accessible. Really wish he would provide a study guide or sample questions to guide studying. I was very unprepared for midterm.
He seemed like a nice guy overall but he really tried to trick us on exams. He used confusing wording and trick questions. This overall made it very hard to learn and grasp the concepts. He did not provide study guides for the exams making it very hard to study. Overall, if you don't have to take 89 with him, please don't for your own sake.
prof lane has great lecture videos online that provide tons of example to help understand the material. but his midterm and final were so tricky and so hard. the wording was just weird and a LOT of us had a very hard time understanding. just get ready to read a lot and to watch a lot of lectures over and over again to fully understand the material
His wordings are so tricky on both midterm and final. I would say the tests were extremely difficult. The average was really low but he curved it.
I love Professor Lane, as he has helped me so much throughout this course as my TA sucked. He is very helpful and is very flexible with office hours. I learned a lot from this class and, although not the easiest, made me feel more confident in my studies here.
