I had her for Chem1C and had the most negative experience but took her again for ochem because people told me she's better at that. she is slightly better at ochem, but that only goes so far. her attitude and teachings are cold and her office hours are pointless. she doesn't care to explain one-on-one and is just not a good quality teacher.
I am currently taking professor anyika for chem 1C and she is great. She is funny yet strict, with an emphasis on book problems, iclicker, exam practices, and quiz practices. If you do the problems for these four categories there is no reason not to do well in her class, they copy practically for the exam. She does not try to trick you! I love her!
I loved Mercy so much and I am taking her again for 109B!! She is the sweetest professor and actually cares about her students and wants them to like what we are learning. She does not try to trick you and is very clear about the quizzes and is so open to taking extra time to answer questions! She is so funny too!! Love my girl mercy <3
She is the sweetest lady! Like the others said, she was adjusting to the quarter system and had to rush towards the end of the quarter, but overall was really good. The most notable aspect of her class is that her tests and quizzes are FAIR! She never tries to trick you, but simply expects you to come knowing the material that she teaches.
Mercy was a great professor. Honestly, some of her lectures were a little rough around the edges, and we were a bit crunched for time towards the end of the course, but she's easy to find outside of class and very understanding. Quizzes are very similar to worksheets and practice problems. Study the book and your notes a ton and you'll do fine :)
Loved Professor Anyika! She followed the book well so it wasn't the end of the world if you missed class. Also, she was always available for questions. This was her first class teaching at UCSB, so she had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the quarter system and ended up crunched for time at the end, but I think she's getting a feel for it.
She made me hate chem and this is supposed to be a pre class. She made me want to jump off the cliff no joke.
this class prepared me a lot for chem1A, however.......prof anyika was highkey mean and i feel like the concepts taught in lectures weren't explained the best they could've been. i definitely learned the majority of the content on my own, from the textbooks. she seems really smart but can be extremely discouraging, unfortunately.
If you have never taken chem before like me, I 100% recommend taking CHEM 25. BUT Mercy is a fear mongerer and not a good teacher and she makes her exams much more difficult than they have to be. Her office hours SUCK she doesn't answer questions directly. She creates a very stressful environment for students, use CLAS! Attendance is Iclicker.
DO NOT take her class. First chem class at university and she gave me the worst impression ever :(
never again
Mercy's class is designed in almost a symbiotic or parasitic way. It felt similar to how Frankenstein designed his monster, and how the monster soon grew an immense desire for a relationship. That relationship was us (the students), and the class was the monster, chasing after us, gripping us by the neck, desperately calling for our engagement.
I really enjoyed her lectures and she was the perfect balance of stern and kind. The tests aren't that hard if you study, which she gives many tips and ideas on how to do so.
Chem 25 should be a good class to prepare for Chem 1A, but having Mercy does not help at all. She only goes through slides during lecture, while solving the easiest example problems, while barely explaining her process. The example problems provided are absolutely nothing like the problems provided on the quiz and midterms.
i have nightmares of this class and professor. her literal agenda is that if you don't dedicate ur life to her class and ONLY her class it seems, then you don't belong there. her passive-agressive, borderline bully-like jokes and comments still ring in my ear to this day. i was so miserable. so miserable.
If you want your first year to be literal hell, take this class. Mercy constantly told us and ENGRAVED in us that we would fail unless we studied the material ALL day and every day. She made her whole personality about chemistry and took a huge toll on my mental health as a first year. I was depressed and her negative comments in class never helped
Never thought I'd write on of these, but she shows 0 compassion for the students and absolutely fearmongers
I am an A student--except for this class. Every test had a class average of ~60% (NO CURVE). Her lectures didn't cover all the information or make sense. Her "practice problems" were WAY easier than the test problems, which led to people doing poorly. She is a fearmonger, excessively hard grader, and dispassionate person. Avoid her...
She is not a kind professor and not compassionate torwards problems outside your control. Creates a stressful learning environment for the course and is very hard to talk to and reach. Although is honest and transparent and explains things during lecture.
She prides herself on being a tough grader, thinking that it also means she's a good professor. She's not. Often incoherent, hard to reach, and tests don't reflect what's assigned or taught in class. I'm sorry I took her class. Avoid if you can.
Her sense of humor keeps class fun. Tests are hard but that obvious, its ochem. I loved her teaching style and think people give her wayyyy too much hate. Take queen anyika if you want to make ochem slightly less painful
Great professor, clearly explains O-chem at the highest level of depth, preparing you for all future coursework. Tests are hard, make sure to take notes at lecture, read the textbook and do all practice problems!
Do not take her for 109C! She is very discouraging and her responses to emails are rude. She acts like she is so wise in terms of the subject, yet she frequency makes mistakes and always has a lame excuse for it. Right before a midterm, she said the test would easier than any English or Spanish test ever. The average ended up being a 65.25%
Anyika is a quite poor professor and I am tired of acting like she isn't. Her lectures do no better at teaching than the textbook itself, her test averages are consistently significantly lower than other OChem averages, and she fails to prepare students WHATSOEVER for her exams. do well on the first two because the third quiz and final are awful.
