Coburn is easily one of the sweetest and kindest professors, but i was not a big fan of her teaching style. Lectures are very theory based, which doesnt transfer over to the homework and midterm material. The midterm and final are extremely difficult, I got a C on both exams despite studying 20+ hours for each and going to office hours
Horrible course. NO feedback during the whole quarter. You even don't know the grading criteria.
Don't expect an easy class, times have changed. 30% midterm, 30% final, 40% basically guaranteed. Tests were graded nicely, but it was hard to solidly learn any of the concepts at all during lecture. She was a cootie pootootie and really nice and respectable. If she could change her teaching style slightly, learning outcomes would be better.
Exams felt hard, and the slides didn't help me study for them. The only resource that was given is a list of textbook problems, but I would have appreciated having actual practice exams since many times the questions end up being different. HW and quizzes are graded on completion, so if you're unable to keep up, you may end up cramming at the end.
Coburn is an alright teacher but good if you are ready to learn without the pressure of grades. The tests are identical to problems in lecture/homework, and sections are super organized and teach you a lot. Lectures themself went slowly but lots of time was spent on each problem, and it took very little work outside of homework.
120B itself is extremely hard but Prof. Coburn does her best to make it easy on students. Homework is graded on participation, has EC, she's flexible if you're struggling, v helpful in office hours, & puts tons of effort into making clear lecture slides. TAs were awful at grading tho so check your graded midterm. Class moves v fast so study hard.
Seems most people either hate or love Dr. Coburn but as long as you go into it without the notion that you're getting an easy A & actually study - you'll do well in her class. She is a bit tough to reach outside of class & does make calculation errors in her slides but the study guides prepare you well for the midterm/final + cheat sheets allowed
so cutie patootie i love her
Dr. Coburn never cared about the students. Super hard exams and low-quality assignments. Avoid her at all cost.
So many mistakes in her slides. Lecture is a waste of time.
I am not a great fan of unreasonably hard exams, highly disorganized slides, and amateur professorship. Dr. Coburn clearly don't have a good grasp of how to teach. Previously, she gained popularity with easy-A's (which is toxic); now, she tortures the class a lot. I will recommend Mouti or Ravat instead.
I got an A according to my assignment grades + my Gauchospace grade and on GOLD I have a B. I reached out to Coburn about this but she's highly unresponsive so I reached out to my TA TWICE as well. My grade is STILL wrong and probably won't ever be fixed. I just graduated so like whatever but this isn't an issue students should have to deal with.
Baracaldo spends the littlest amount of time possible to tend to her students (Doesnt respond to emails or slack) and downcurved the class. If you're in her class, you're on your own with your peers
This class serves as punishment for many of those who takes Coburn's class because they desire an easy A and don't want to learn.
1. Super hard and long midterm that is impossible to finish within 75min. 2. an average around 68 for midterm, no curve. 3. 10 super hard and time consuming challenge homework questions for extra credit, and only worth 1% applied to homework only (basically nothing). 4. Lecture slides full of mistakes. 5. Impossible to reach.
Never respond to emails and grading rubric is horrible.
Love Coburn so much. I took 120B and 131 with her. She's the best professor in the stats department period!
As the lecturer who received degree in psychology, I highly doubt her ability of teaching statistics. Calculation mistakes appeared frequently in her ppt instead of essential steps, which she clearly ignored. The average of mid was 60% with 36 students failed. Although she does give freebies and extra credits, BE PREPARED TO LEARN BY YOURSELF!
Her lectures and overall the course is very unorganized. She down curved the final grade which is ridiculous.
She is the worst professor I've had at UCSB. She promised a practice final, told us never mind, and then released it after student complaints WITHOUT solutions 1.5 days before a final worth 40% of our grade. She said we would have an extra credit assignment to increase our grade by 5% but then randomly made it 2% until we complained again...
Organized lectures and excellent explanations in class and during office hours. Attending the office hours of professor and tutor is really helpful for homework and quizzes.
Flip-flopped on whether there'd be a practice exam up until the day before the final. We were promised all quarter a 5% extra credit bonus for our final grade, which was then changed to 2% after our final had already passed. Quizzes/homework were pretty easy, but then the final had a class average of 55% and over three-fourths of the class failed.
Professor Baracaldo is not available outside of class, has unresponsive TAs, and reads off of lecture slides. Does not teach that well, and takes forever to grade and reply to students. Ridiculously unorganized and has inconsistent times between assignments.
Overall the lectures are decently clear to follow and definitely make a difference in understanding the material so I wouldn't skip them, but they don't align very well with homework and quizzes, and all understanding of proofs is meant to come from these lectures as well. Attend section and work with the labs as they were the biggest hw help
