Was extremely disorganized, got all information from section. After the quarter ended, she decided that lecture attendance was too low and that she would grade each of the final projects "with a higher standard of scrutiny" and I only got to know this from my TA, after he told us that if we put effort towards our project we would get an A.
I really tried to see the good that all of these reviews were talking about, but I just couldn't. Lecture was disorganized and completely off-topic from the course at times, and Prof. Waid held a fake final exam over our heads all quarter, not clarifying what our final was until week 9. Grades were due on GOLD days ago, but everyone has an NR.
I am so confused by the good reviews. She is kookie and passionate, but I felt her class was disorganized. Course expectations were unclear. I did not know (and still don't) if there will be a formal final exam. I would take a different class if possible.
I had a horrible flu and made plans with her over email. I had just spent an evening in the ER because I was dehydrated and couldn't keep fluids down. In about th 5th email I forgot to call her "Dr prof etc" and she decided like it was the time and place to lecture me over it. Funny how this handily undid any respect or authority her title implies.
One of my favorite professors, I have taken her courses many times. She has such wonderful stories and amazing insights - it is really worth it to read the material before lecture because it really enhances your learning. She is such a kind and caring professor to all of her students and TAs. She is a valuable memory of my experience at UCSB.
Candace is such a wonderful professor and human. She is so passionate and the books she chooses are absolutely amazing, I actually enjoyed reading all of them and it didn't feel like homework. She really wants everyone to succeed and makes accommodations to make sure those who put in effort do. She also brought in AMAZING guest lecturers!
The lectures can seem a bit confusing at first but its best to just sit back and listen instead of writing everything down. Professor Waid is really nutty but you learn to love it. If you do all the reading and show up to lecture you'll likely finish with over 100%. I really recommend listening to audiobooks instead of just reading.
Candace is probably my favorite English professor at UCSB. The books she chooses are all really good - found my new favorite in this class - and grading is fair. But what sets her apart is her sheer passion, kookiness, and kindness. You won't find another professor like her, so I highly recommend her courses!
I love Prof Waid her lectures are awesome and she is so much fun to be around
Lecture is extremely hard to follow, you have to try very hard not to get lost. She rarely talks about pertinent things and says somewhat offensive things at times. Sections are helpful to understanding of lecture. Candace is also very sweet, she just has no filter- could use an on-stage editor.
Her lecture style isn't for everyone, it comes across as disorganized but if you sit through her tangents she has amazing insight into the texts and passion for Gothic Lit. Lots of short story PDFs, no textbooks to buy, but READ. Midterm and final consists of term IDs and passage IDs which are all given in lecture. Get to write your own story too!
Great professor, really amazing woman. She really makes you read but the novels are good and worthwhile. Crammed 5 books in, in the two days before the final but ended up with an A.
Candace is like a mad genius, and incredibly funny, spirited, and SO enthusiastic about the subject matter. This woman loves what she does and it's so nice to see someone who gets so emotional about what they teach! She's super kind, and the only thing that I would say is that sometimes she isn't too clear about things, but just ask!
Yep, Candace is effing nuts. But, that's what makes her great! Her lectures can be a bit tangential but it's when she goes off topic that you gain some absolutely BRILLIANT insight. She is very helpful and accessible outside of class. It is an incredible opportunity to get to study with her. Go talk to her outside of class and she'll inspire you.
Waid is amazing. I love her classes. If you go to lecture and listen and engage with the class, you will be fine. She can be confusing, and she does teach in a very "stream of consciousness" sort of way, but she is so insightful that it makes up for it. My recommendation is to record the lecture(s), and listen to them later to glean the main info.
The bad reviews are correct: CANDACE IS CRAZY. But if you are an English major, you might appreciate it. READ your novels: she personally thanked me once just because she knew I read the books before class. It matters if you speak in class, so if you're going to sit there mute, don't take her. She's like a mad genius - really fun/funny, VERY smart.
My review is similar to everyone else's: Waid is all over the place. Her class held NO structure. She would keep hinting at exams but never had any dates. She would give assignments without due dates, kept changing the syllabus, and never finished a thought. She IS very brilliant at times BUT, even with that being said, I WOULD NOT take her again.
Waid is extremely scatterbrained and hard to understand 90% of the time. However, she has moments of absolute brilliance. Some of the things that she said about certain texts left me in awe and wanting to know more. However, she often got distracted and did not finish her train of thought. However, she is very knowledgeable and brilliant.
Prof Waid is an interesting teacher: kinda crazy, very excited, and hard to understand the majority of the time. Her selection of stories are great for this genre of English (Gothic Horror), but her lectures do not teach to the midterm/final a lot of the time. I loved the readings, but hated her lectures. No textbook (big plus).
Dont listen to the bad reviews. Waid is the best professor I've ever had. Ridiculously kind and helpful. Very sweet and approachable despite her extreme intelligence and success in her career. Not to mention the fact that she is absolutely hilarious and entertaining in class. If you attend class and actually care at all, you will get an easy A.
least fav class i have taken in 3 years. didn't learn a thing, lectures are so frustrating to go to because her thoughts are so scattered and random. avoid if possible. relatively easy A tho.
I'm an English major and I hated this class. The only thing that made it somewhat likable was my awesome TA. I hated going to lecture because Waid was all over the place and confusing, it was hard to stay in there for an hour and fifteen. She knows the subject well, but she doesn't do a very good job of staying on topic or teaching.
She seems to be crazy but extremely entertaining. One of the best classes in all of my college experience thus far.
Waid is very knowledgable in her subject and emphasises what is going to be on the midterm and final. However, her extensive knowledge, for me, lets her down, as she explains too much outside information and confuses the important. If you take a lot of notes and really listen and decipher what she says its a really interesting subject.
