Do not take Math 4B with Stopple. Lectures are all over the place and super disorganized. Exam problems are completely different from homework. Study guides are vague and do not have answer keys. No practice exams provided.
Barely gives study guides. So vague
Great professor. Material is well structured and fair paced- Really easy course and exams as long as you understand linearity
Do not take diff eq's with this guy. The guy is lazy. He consistently ends lectures 30 minutes early, doesn't show work or much mathematical reasoning, and he won't give a good response to any kind of question you might have. On top of all of this, the textbook for this class is horrendously difficult to comprehend. The tests are very difficult too
His lectures can be confusing at times but all the notes are posted online and he gives us plenty of practice problems so it's not that bad. While the homework policy was harsh initially, he gave us 2 more attempts after the first chapter, waives 30 points instead of 10 now, and will not count homework in the final grade if it harms you.
I took Math 4B with this professor. You have to pay $80 bucks for WileyPlus for his assignments, and you only had 1 try for each question. Yes, all the questions are graded and they reflect on your final grade. He discourages you from asking questions. I really tried in this class but he was very unhelpful even when I ask questions and TA sucks.
Took this class for 4B and the lectures are all over the place, super unorganized. Had to get an online textbook in order to do the homework which cost 80$, the book wasn't helpful and the homework was completely different from what he was teaching in class. Literally walked out of the first lecture without understanding anything...
Professor Stopple's class is challenging, but if you really try, you will find it really helpful for later courses. He also curves a lot. He also gives very little homework.
His lecture notes are confusing and messy. There is too little homework for review purpose. He is also a harsh grader. His grading policy is absurd.
Professor Stopple is a great teacher and is super accessible outside of class. Lectures are SUPER quick though and you're scrambling to write down a super elaborate proof. He wants his students to succeed and genuinely cares, but therefore he is a tough grader and wants you to follow very specific proof structures.
Prof Stopple will give midterms that may replicate the homework, but his lectures are VERY FAST (like kachOw) and the min you try to process the info, he already has a board full of proofs to write down. He frequently reassures the class that the material is easy but this only makes struggling students feel worse. HW (35%), 3 midterms 1 final (15%)
Lectures are not helpful at all. He just writes based on the textbook. Hard exams. Difficult to communicate with. Tough person.
TBH, the structure of this course is terrible. His handwriting is also terrible. The lectures are kinda messy and it's even better to just read the textbook thoroughly. There's only one exercise hw after each lecture, which is not enough for practicing. Lectures are useless to some degrees. And he didn't even allow restroom during exam.
Jeffrey Stopple is a tremendous teacher! There is a lot of homework/busy-work, but he ultimately wants to show you the bigger picture of mathematics -- to understand it conceptually as opposed to just being good at number crunching. Make sure to do all the homework on web-assign, and save your notes from those homeworks.
Amazing professor, go to his claseeses go to his office hours. You only have yourself to blame if you don't do well. He makes you try. Gives your confidence. He believes in all of his students. A great professor. I've taken three classes from him
Super nice guy and very helpful. Requires students to go to office hours twice and if he knows your name, your grade depends on it. Topics presented well. Know how to do the problems he gives you before exams, the exact questions will be on the exam!! Really nice. Dry speech.
The BEST math professor at UCSB. All you have to do is finish the recommended questions. I got 3 A+ for my 3B 4A and 4B. Definitely recommend him!!!
I love Professor Stopple, he is the best math professor I've had at UCSB. Really helpful if you go to office hours, no surprises--if you do the work and the recommended review problems you'll do well
Great professor ever have in Math. Midterm fair and easy. if do all the homework and recommend problem, will be easy to get an A.
Only had him for math 4A, was recommended by a friend of mine. Really like him a lot! And VERY helpful during office hours, if you don't get the stuff in lecture, go to his office hours! And DEFINITELY DEFINITELY do recommended book problems, they will show up on your midterms and final (this is announced in class and on the syllabus)
One of the best teachers I've had at UCSB! He's a great teacher and is extremely helpful and caring if you go into his office hours andor ask questions. Definitely take with Stopple. The passfail system for tests is a little weird, but he is super clear and helpful about his tests.
Professor Stopple really cares about his students. He won't leave you hanging as long as you utilize office hours and your discussion section. He has a very specific grading system where you have to get at LEAST half of the TOTAL cumulative exam questions fully correct to pass the class, so you'll have to really study hard. Great professor overall!
He was very helpful in office hours. I still keep in contact with him now ever so slightly.
The test is easy. And we can sometimes got a extra credit to replace the questions you got the lowest scores on the test. Prof Stopple is really helpful. He organize the class very well.
