Millner is absolutely awesome!!!! I believe his exams are completely reasonable, and his lectures are jam packed with information that's described in a rather eloquent manner. Im shocked he has such a low rating on rate my professor, those complaining should definitely not be Econ majors! Put in the work, and Millner will match you! 10/10
Horrible.
Prof Deschenes is a compassionate professor, but this class is really just independent work. Do EVERYTHING that is assigned, if not more. The content in this class is straightforward, they just make the class hard to pass with the weights and shortness of the tests. Prof Deschenes is a cool guy, this class is just a pain.
Lectures and book weren't really helpful. DEFINITELY go to CLAS!!!! 2 midterms worth 20% each and final worth 45%. Best way to study is by doing all past exams provided. His teaching was decent but content was difficult.
One of the hardest lower division courses at UCSB for sure. Two midterms and a final make up most of your grade. Lectures are all posted online from when Hartman did the course during covid, content is exactly the same but I would attend lecture regardless. Deschenes is a cool guy.
10A is a hard class, but this prof makes it a little bit easier. Generally cares about his students and wants us to do well. Tests are hard. There will be one midterm that you do well on, the other you will fail, then final is a bit easier. Go to CLAS, office hours, do every practice test and worksheet that is available to you.
For anyone reading these, Prof Millner isn't that bad as a prof. He explains content well and he's very accessible/kind to students. However, he teaches Econ 10a and his version of 10a is going to be VERY difficult. You can do it, you just need to take it seriously. Use CLAS, do every single old exam, and understand that it's a numbers game.
Took this guy last winter and the average for the first midterm was 40%. Made first midterm ridiculously hard for no reason. Didn't pass the class and got an A in spring when I retook with another prof.
Without a doubt the worst econ professor I've had thus far. The econ professor I had in community college is literally leaps and bounds over millner. He uses slides from previous years and tries to be funny by cracking jokes about his microphone and hot dogs. It's like "dude, just do your job." Class avg. for our 1st midterm was a 40%
Millner is a joke, and so is the entire econ department. They're literally sitting back collecting a paycheck while they have their TA's do all the work. TA's are grad students, so their "office hours" are minimal, to say the least. Overall, UCSB and the entire UC system is pathetic and they should be ashamed of themselves.
Mainly have to self-study. In person lectures are basically repeats of prerecorded lectures. Often cuts lectures short (Normally 50 min, sometimes ends at 30 min)
He uses Hartman's lecture videos and shows up for 10 mins to restate what he says and does not answer any questions regarding the material. His quizzes and tests are very hard even for the smartest kids. It is not about studying it is about not picking what you think is the correct answer.
Makes Hartman seem good.
Deschenes is fine however it's really hard to follow his lectures, especially when he rambles and makes jokes. I finally decided to attend a different lecturer after 3 weeks with him. Although he says he adds extra info in his slides, in reality he changed the wording and placement of words. At best he only adds 1 extra sentence of explanation.
Prof. Deschenes taught a difficult class that only a small amount of transfer students were able to pass, but he made the class an absolute joy to be in. His lectures are great at hammering down conceptual material, and his sense of humor kept me sane throughout the very tough quarter. I could not recommend him more, he is by far the best 10A prof.
Mr. Deschenes' 140B was quite enjoyable; the grading is fair and balanced, the content is concise and instructive. Also, he can be pretty funny. Outside of class, he is often willing to speak about econometrics in an engaged and helpful way. Would recommend.
I love Deschenes! If you get the chance, take him for 10A. He explains the material very well, and lectures are entertaining. Yes, this class is a lot of work and the problems can be difficult but Deschenes explains the concepts very well and is super approachable! I hope I can take another class with him sometime.
I took intermediate econometrics with Prof. Deschenes a couple of semesters ago, and he was a great professor. Interesting information, really tried to make sure it was accessible to everyone, good at answering questions. Half the class was lectures and half presentations of a big partner project. Recommend taking 140B with him for sure.
Amazing professor. Actually knows what he's talking about.
Lectures are useless. go to clas. book is useless too. the midterm covers just clas mostly.
Agreed, definitely the choice for 10a. Compared to other professors, he has a more concise and effective was of teaching 10a. Very approachable professor, I would recommend him and hopefully get to take another class with him!
He is definitely the choice for 10A. I did not succeed in his class but that's because I did not put in the work and took his teaching for granted. Compared to Hartman, he is by far the better lecturer and is far more approachable and helpful. 10A is still very difficult though but thank the dept. for that. Go to CLAS and office hours. You got this
What can I say about 10a, it really lives up to its reputation. Deschenes is a good guy and decent teacher, but I really feel it could have been done more effectively. This class is all abstract, impractical theory and really has no bearings on real economics. This class should not be tied to accounting, but that is out of my control
