Faculty led seminar focusing on graduate student research in various fields of specialization within Economics. Students will typically produce a research draft each quarter. Second year students will be required to produce a formal written proposal for a research paper, which will be evaluated and enforced within the working group structure. Proposal must clearly articulate a research question of interest and the methodological approach. Written proposals must receive a passing grade (B or above) no later than the end of winter quarter of the second year.

CollegeAt the end of the day, Econ 10A is a self-study class, and everything, lectures, CLAS, office hours, is supplemental to the work and time you put in. In terms of W2026, the midterms were very fair, and comparable to and sometimes easier than F2025. The winter finals are very rough compared to fall, but not impossible, just gonna take some work.
Econ 10A is a notoriously difficult class. Deschenes is a good teacher, but my main issue is that he explains the material like we know what's going on. Most of us have no clue what is happening. To further engage with students, I think he needs to tone it down a bit. Less complex wording, and more understanding of us not knowing what is happening.
Before I wasn't sure why he had so many negative reviews on here- the midterms were fair compared to other quarters and he explained concepts pretty well. That was until I just went through all the past winter finals- I would say more than half of the questions have no relation whatsoever to lecture/outside materials.
I can learn nothing from his lectures. His lectures are disorganized and confused. His exams are ridiculously hard, I don't know how the exams relate to lectures.
I thought that he was a great professor for such a notoriously tough class. He definitely tried his best to teach the material to get everyone to a level of understanding. Not much busy work, just be sure to pay attention in lecture and study the practice problems to succeed.
10a is a hard class filled with random information that are irrelevant to life regardless of which professor you have. I can tell he tried his best to make this class more engaging but the content is very dry and hard to understand at many times. Tests are worth 85% of ur grade and the only way to study is to do practice exams over and over again.
