Prof. Merolla is an AMAZING lecturer, path to an A is clear in this class. exams were all MCQ and very fair, he curves and drops questions, one big theory paper that was worked on throughout the quarter. super engaging lectures, some flipped lectures, can't recommend him enough, great content, opened my eyes to the field of comms.
Best professor ever!! He is so entertaining and upbeat! Definitely cares about all of his students and wants to see them do well. I did not feel overloaded with work in this class and was excited to go to lecture everyday. One 6-7 page paper due at end of quarter, but super easy. Very easy to do well if you attend class!
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. I took him for both COMM 88 and 89 and would absolutely take his class again. Study well for the tests but I seriously have no complaints about his classes. Visit office hours, he's a yapper and loves to talk to students. He's so passionate about the field of communication and lectures show that
Loved taking this class with Merolla, he was clear on what needed to be done and was an amazing lecturer. Class was never boring but the TA's are not that great. Definitely recommend this professor.
With Comm 88 being my first class of the day in my first quarter, Professor Merolla made joining this school way less intimidating. The times I went to office hours were super helpful and the homework actually felt useful in understanding the concept of research. I'd definitely take his class again and am hoping to do so in the future!
I loved taking Professor Merolla's COMM89 class! The class was engaging, with in-person and video lectures and a TA section, although the final paper was worth 40% of your grade. A textbook is not required for purchase; it is provided as a PDF on Canvas. If you plan on taking COMM89, I 100% WILL TAKE IT AGAIN!
Professor Merolla is the most well-spoken and knowledgeable professor I've had. He knows everything about the course and the subject. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, do it. The class is easy to understand, and homework is based on completion. The final paper is challenging, but you won't lose sleep over it.
My favorite comm teacher so far. Merolla truly cares for students and goes out of his way to make sure the material is interesting to learn about by tying teachings into present stories/ trends. Tests online and one easy group project that is super chill and done in sections. I would totally take another one of his classes in the future.
Merolla was a spectacular dude. Made every lecture captivating and connected each theory to timely events / references in order for the class to be engaged. COMM 89 consisted of 4 easy online quizzes and an essay. Every section assignment had room for creativity which I cherished most... Easy money A; Merolla was a chiller and a half too.
4 online quizzes, lowest grade dropped. No other final or midterm. 1 paper worth 40% or smth of ur grade that he and TAs help with a lot via structured assignments. Best lecturer I've had at SB so far. Great speaker. His lectures are engaging and funny. Not a hard class at all. Section attendance mandatory
perfect professor
Great professor I really enjoyed his lectures. He made things easy to understand and was very open to feedback. I would definitely have him as my teacher again.
Prof Merolla is great! Some of the theories taught can be confusing and the concepts can get muddled but he is very open to questions and does his best to support everyone. 1 big paper due at the end of the quarter, weekly readings, and quizzes. As long as you go to lecture and watch pre-recorded lectures you'll be fine.
I loved professor Merolla! His lectures were engaging, so it was worth it to attend class, even though he posted his slides. The whole class was structured around a paper, which was about 40 points of our final grade. He gives a ton of time to work on it and lots of room during lecture for questions. You can tell he is passionate about his work!
Professor Merolla was great! I loved the structure of the class, grading was very clear, and as long as you go to/watch the lectures and take notes, (open-note quizzes) you will succeed! I found his lectures really interesting, and way preferred this class over Comm 1. This class is what made me fall in love with the comm major.
Professor Merolla is the absolute sweetest! It was so fun to learn about new communication concepts and he always presented them in an interesting and cool way. Highly recommend taking Comm 89 with him if you get the chance!
I took this class to retake comm 89 and I really really enjoyed merollas lectures. His lectures were easy to follow and made really good examples and explained the theories really well. I am really sad the class has come to an end because I learned a lot from him and I really liked his teaching style.
Lectures very informative and interesting.
Prof. Merolla assisted Prof. Lane W21. Grading included Intro Video (5%), Weekly Assignments (40%), Paper Outline (10%), Research Paper (40%) and Research Participation (5%). Lectures + reading material was interesting and easy to understand. I recommend Li Qi as a TA.
To be honest, his lectures are very well-organized and thorough so I actually enjoyed going to lectures because I felt like I was actually learning something. However, to be honest I also had a professor crush on him so I WANTED to go to class HAHA. Overall, interesting class and manageable if you go to lectures and keep up with the readings.
Best professor, did research with him and I remember in Comm 89, he was so thorough with every theory, explained everything in a way that didn't bore you but also helped you understand the material (probably why I wanted to join his research). Such a gem professor, take his classes if you actually want to understand the material. Taking his comm111
Andy is the best professor I've ever had. I took this with him as my second attempt at the course after force failing with Dunbar (avoid). But even though I had learned all the material already I still went because he made it so interesting.
Andy is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. Cares about students, interesting and engaging lectures. Exams are extremely lecture-heavy. Do readings if you want an A, but not mandatory. Start paper a week before it's due. Midterm and Final exams are straightforward and easy to understand, start studying 1-2 weeks beforehand.
Andy has been my favorite professor Ive had at UCSB. The first prof Ive seen GENUINELY care about his students. Grades very fairly and the TAs were super helpful. This man is a homie
