Loved him! Such a great lecturer & so excited about his subject! Several papers & section attendance is mandatory. Grades hard because COMM major is very impacted. Make sure to explain theories clearly in essays.
GOAT. Makes lecture fun and easy. The textbook can supplement lecture but lecture is still worth going to. 1 paper, 1 midterm, 1 final, and section make up your grade. Exams are not meant to be tricky, with a solid understanding of material getting an A is very likely. Best pre-COMM class in my opinion and best pre-COMM professor!
Andy is one of my favorite professors I have ever taken. He is very kind and approachable, but also very knowledgeable and respected. He really knows his stuff, and he is great at making class interesting. I enjoyed going to class and getting the opportunity to learn from him. I hope I get into the COMM major so I can take more classes with him
Fav professor at UCSB so far. A genuine and funny professor, who makes lectures not only interesting but entertaining. Go to lecture, maybe refresh on some topics with the readings.. really straightforward tests + one research paper. You won't regret taking him!!
Andy is so sweet and funny. He is the best pro I've ever had at UCSB. Questions on midterm and final are very straightforward. Don't worry about it, just attend to lectures and read materials. (ANDY, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Andy is definitely the best professor I've had at UCSB so far. He made Comm 89 so fun and it's now my favorite class I've taken so far too. He's hilarious and makes lectures really interesting so the material doesn't feel forced but fun to learn about. If you pay attention in lecture (which is easy) and do the readings it's an easy A!
Andy is the best professor at UCSB!! He honestly cares about his students. His exams were really fair and does not intentionally try to trick you. He's also a super charismatic lecturer. HANDS DOWN BEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN AT UCSB.
Andy is such a sweet guy! I have so far taken Comm 1 with Mullin and compared to her, his tests are way more fair. Just make sure to look at your lecture notes and do your readings and you will be totally fine. But honestly Andy is super nice and clear on what he is looking for. Definitely would recommend to take a class with him!
I LOVE ANDYYYYYY. He's so sweet and charming in lectures, and he always has students interests at heart. What sets him apart from Mullin is that his tests are much more straightforward! Study your lecture notes and the concept guide he posts on gauchospace, and you will definitely get an A.
Andy has been the best professor I've had at UCSB so far. His lectures are super entertaining and he delivers the material in a way that makes yo remember it. His tests do not try to trick you and are very straightforward. He does a good job of understanding his students and making sure they understand the material before moving on.
Such a down to earth, funny guy. Recently came from Ohio State so he's adjusting to UCSB. His lectures are different from Mullin's all the best ways possible; straightforward, and comes straight from lecture/reading. He posts lecture slides online like a real homie. If you put effort in, it's easily best class you'll take that quarter.
Amazing lectures and fair tests. Love him!
If you are a comm major you should definitely take a class with Professor Merolla, he has a really insightful and clear view on communication as a field of study and he's a great teacher. Straightforward lectures and assignments, three online exams that are easy to do well on if you take notes.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Merolla gives great lectures and his courses never fail to be interesting and thought provoking. If you're a comm student, definitely take one of his courses.
This is my second time taking one of Merolla's classes and he has to be one of the best professors on campus if not THE best. He is extremely good at presenting and lecturing about the subjects which makes learning genuinely fascinating. He really cares about his students and it's reflected in his organized class format. I HIGHLY recommend him!
I'm amazed at how organized the class structure was even though it was 3 weeks and my first upper-division comm (A great start to summer classes). Such an inspirational class to learn how to manage conflict and I learned a lot! I also look forward to taking COMM111 in the fall.
Professor Merolla was a great/caring teacher and very knowledgeable about nonverbal communication. Most lectures were interesting but sometimes they could get boring. The quizzes and papers are not hard but you do have to do the work to get a good grade.
Merolla really cares about his students and their experience in his class. He checks in on you throughout the quarter to make sure all is well. He has a few quizzes in his class that are multiple choice and can be stressful if you don't study the notes. Interesting lectures and easy paper prompts. Be thorough and you will be good!
Great class and amazing lectures. All tests are online with days to take it, but they can be challenging. You have to do 2/3 of the papers and those are short and easy. Great prof and interesting class
Professor. Merolla is the best and kindest professor I've ever had at UCSB! He is very professional and kind. And he is a professor who is very valuable to know. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Merolla is easily one of the best COMM professors in the department, and personally my favorite at UCSB. Grading consisted of three online quizzes (18% each), a short writing assignment (16%), and the final essay (5 pages, 30%). Lectures were amazing and the readings were relevant. I highly recommend this professor and any of his courses.
I took this course when a portion of the quarter was online and I thought that the online and in-person lectures were both great! The recorded lectures are very well produced and interesting to watch. There were two written assignments and three quizzes which were open-note! Very easy and interesting class and I would definitely take it again.
I am a senior about to graduate and this class was literally my favorite at UCSB. Merolla's lectures are so organized and concise. He is always available after class to answer any questions. The TA-Rebe is amazing she is very accomodating and is always available to answer questions, and is so helpful during office hours too!
This class was taken through an asynchronous format. Each week there are posted lectures and the most is 2 hours. There is a weekly module assignment due which is around 1 page about the lecture and it is simple as long as you follow all the instructions. One final essay around 4 pages and is easy. Recommend everyone take it since it's relaxing
