Mercy was a great professor. Honestly, some of her lectures were a little rough around the edges, and we were a bit crunched for time towards the end of the course, but she's easy to find outside of class and very understanding. Quizzes are very similar to worksheets and practice problems. Study the book and your notes a ton and you'll do fine :)
Loved Professor Anyika! She followed the book well so it wasn't the end of the world if you missed class. Also, she was always available for questions. This was her first class teaching at UCSB, so she had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the quarter system and ended up crunched for time at the end, but I think she's getting a feel for it.
Anyika is a quite poor professor and I am tired of acting like she isn't. Her lectures do no better at teaching than the textbook itself, her test averages are consistently significantly lower than other OChem averages, and she fails to prepare students WHATSOEVER for her exams. do well on the first two because the third quiz and final are awful.
This has to be one of the hardest class I have ever taken here at UCSB. The content was already hard and messy but Anyika made it harder by hiding crazy tricks in her tests and I dislike how points were either all or nothing. The final was destructive to say the least but the curve she gave was very generous at the end of the day.
Anyika's tests are very hard and can be demotivating at times, which is the only con I can really make. But this is intrinsic to any O Chem course. However her lectures are very concise and well taught. Almost everything important is covered in lecture, but I recommend reading the textbook for review. Always do the textbook problems and DON'T CRAM.
I have never put as much effort into anything as much as this class, yet the work goes by unrecognized. The midterms were really difficult, but fair and you will do well if you put the work in. BUT be prepared to basically teach yourself the entire course by reading the textbook. Final was HORRIBLE and super unfair, it was stuff we had never seen
This class was the hardest I have ever worked for. Studying 6 hours a day still gets you nowhere. She is condescending when you ask questions, and when she does reply, its usually one word answers. There are things on the exams that were never taught in lecture, and then she is surprised when the entire class average on the exams is 50-60%.
The only class I got a C in. She truly made it that way. Never had a professor I didn't like so much because of how unfair her grading/tests/quizzes were and how much she didn't care about her students.
The class is super slowly paced and easy since it's prep for the first gen chem, and mercy is super personable and teaches very clearly. There wasn't a single time I felt behind, so as long as you go to lectures it's a free A. She's funny too so lecture isn't all that unpleasant.
Definitely wants students to succeed, the class was great preparation for chem 1a, one of the most organized professors I've had so far.
The way she taught and organized her slides were SO thorough and easy to understand. She does not put any concepts on tests that she has not gone over or were not in the recommended book problems/section worksheets. As long as you pay attention AND do the book problems, you will do amazing!! She is hilarious, funny, genuine, caring!!
Class is fast-paced, so I feel as though I grasped the material better outside of class by going over the notes. I appreciate that she does a good amount of practice problems. She has her silly moments too. You will have to put a lot of time outside of the lecture to understand the material.
Definitely recommend this class for people who don't have much previous chem knowledge. I learned a lot from the course and don't regret taking it. Mercy can seem a little intimidating and present concepts in a basic yet overwhelming way but if you do the textbook problems at the end of each chapter (notably the cumulative ones) you will be fine.
Somewhat enjoyed lectures because she's funny and sweet, however the way she broke down topics didn't click for me as I didn't take chem in high school. Very straightforward on expectations and preparing you for Chem 1A. However I didn't find asking for help very useful, when i didn't get a problem she only told me which concepts I need to review.
She was great for intro to chem. Does a good job at explaining chem and setting you up for 1A and how that class runs. She is good at helping you understand topics you need help with. very funny and sweet. def recommend if you know nothing or very little about chem.
Prof can come off harsh, but she is hilarious and genuinely wants her students to succeed. This class is definitely challenging if you don't have much experience in chem. You really need to attend every lecture and section, and go to office hours (can't stress that enough). Highly recommend textbook problems before every exam. Good prep for 1A!
She really does care for you and wants you to learn. There are 3 quizzes and 3 midterms plus the final, make sure to attend lectures (iclickers) and book problems and aleks. Course is honestly easy, just need to review consistently for the tests (and some self-teaching). She is very clear about her grading and expectations, and sets them high!
class was SO hard. i put in hours everyday to do good in this class including going to office hours and talking to my TA and i just couldn't get it. coming from someone who got a 103% in chem in high school it's very humbling to be in this class. the lectures were so fast and everything was just so difficult. 9 weeks is too short for chem. unreal.
I loved taking this intro chem class with her. Very dedicated to ensure we all understood what was expected of us in her course, how to get help, and what to expect in the courses after CHEM-25. Had a lot of personality that made lectures tolerable & she seemed to enjoy her job. Very manageable course if you put in the work. 10/10 experience.
Her lectures are very informative, she has an accent but it never hindered my success. We had homework due every Sunday 3 tests 3 quizzes and a final. The tests and quizzes are not the worst just make sure to study! USE OFFICE HOURS! If you are not confident in your chemistry skills TAKE THIS CLASS since it will prepare you for chem1A! good luck!!!
Great Professor for CHEM 25. Cared a lot about her students and genuinely wanted to help students learn chem. Highly recommend!
She's the sweetest and genuinely cares about her students, I would 100% take her again. I hate chem and it's a hard course but she's a fun professor to take it with. her grading is fair and doing good in homework helps ur grade. it's chem which sucks no matter the professor but she makes it okay, just be prepared to study at least 2 hours a day.
This course is really difficult, but Professor Anyika does what she can. She'll teach you everything you need to know for tests, but sometimes there's exceptions and purposefully difficult questions in there to get you. Class averages for this course are low, but there should be a curve.
I LOVE Anyika. She's sassy, but you can tell she cares about you if you so long you put effort into learning the material. She tests you on things that make you really think cause it's not just practice problems from the textbook. She's totally a fair tester. ATTEND OFFICE HOURS they help so much.
