Personally Joseph was the best professor I had for gen chem. It is an inherently difficult course however his exam were always fair. The book problems, practice exams, and concepts in lecture were all reflected in the exams if you study right none of the problems were entirely out of nowhere (an issue with some of the other gen chem profs lol)
Joseph's 1C was hardest in the gen chem series for me. I got A's in both 1A and 1B without doing any book problems, which is NOT an option for Joseph's classes. Follow his schedule of relevant book problems for each week, and really practice the ochem concepts (CLAS helpful for practice). Also, the actual tests do not look like the practice tests.
Like any chem class, it is difficult and very time-consuming, but Joseph gives you all of the tools necessary to succeed. It is one of those classes where you get back what you put in. I did almost all book problems (~3/4 hours a week) and studied extensively for exams (~15 hrs each). Fun lecturer and hard, but fair class
Crisjoe Joseph is such a cutie patootie! The class is hard but you can tell he cares. His lectures are funny and he is very honest about what you need to do / should do in order to succeed in his class.
This is a hard course, but I never felt cheated by a test question Joeseph gave. He gives u as many resources as he can for u to suceed: practice tests, book problems similar to the test and plenty of office hours. Joeseph makes this hard course as managable as he can. If taking gen chem I can't reccomend him enough
Really easy professor. Lecture slides and stuff he talks about sometimes don't line up and can be confusing. Wish he did more practice problems in class--book problems are much harder than what's covered in lecture. 2 midterms and final, all mcq. Cares a lot about students and chem.
Good professor, definitely one of the best in the chemistry department for the gen chem series. I feel like the lectures didn't really go deep enough though on the material we were tested on, but it makes sense because there's SO MUCH to learn and it's not really related at all or linear. For that reason, do as many book problems as possible.
Joseph is one of the best gen chem professors. Very clear lectures and great explanations. 1C is the easiest of the series and his tests are very similar to book problems and practice tests. HIghly recommend him for 1C and the gen chem series.
Very clear and straightforward. Lectures and practice tests are available online.
I did all the recommended book probs and practice tests and scored high on midterms but performed significantly worse on the final. I got A grades in CHEM 1AB though, so I would say his exams vary too much. Fortunately, people enjoy how animated he is as a professor like in his intros. Additionally, his lecture quality is not bad, so go to class!
I think he is an all round good professor to take Chem with as his tests and lectures are very straightforwards. The unfortunate thing is that the final is the most important thing for your grade. It sucked how since the 1st midterm average was so high, he had to make the next 2 tests extra hard to bring the average down. Don't procrastinate.
If you are taking gen chem. TAKE JOSEPH. His tests are taken from book problems and he gives plenty of practice test. He does not try and trick you on the test, as long as you put in the work to study you'll be fine. He posts lectures that are really helpful and clear. Definitely the best gen chem professor.
Chrisjoe was a great chem prof. Outlined very clearly how to succeed in class. Missed the first midterm due to COVID but having the final replace my missing score saved me. Do EVERY SINGLE practice book problem; he takes them verbatim onto the midterms and final. Also has online lecture videos on YT so if you miss a lecture it's not a big deal.
All of gen chem sucks and all of the teachers are difficult, but Joseph is engaging in his lectures and you can tell he cares about his students. The tests were hard but just study a lot more than you think you need to. Do the book problems multiple times because he uses some of them on the tests, and keep up with ALEKS.
I had Joseph for the whole gen chem series and I absolutely loved his class. If you want to do well, you have to put in a lot of time and effort. You don't really need to read the textbook as long as you go to the lecture. If you want to do well, do the book problems at least once. Also, take advantage of CLAS and office hours.
He was great for 1A/B and I found it relatively easy w him. But the final for 1C was rough (avg 58%). But because of the curve still got a good grade. It's very important to do book problems as it will help with ur exams (except for chem1C final lol). Overall he is a great choice for the gen chem series.
I've had Prof. Joseph for the whole gen chem series at UCSB and my experience was great.. until our final for Chem 1C. For all the past finals and midterms, to suceed one needed to go over given past practice exams and know the book problems very well, but this final was so obscure to lower the high averages in the 77, 80 range. Go to office hours!
Save yourself the heartbreak and don't take Joseph for Chem 1C. His final was so difficult and not covered in the lectures, that the average was an F. I did great with the other professors, Joseph was unclear in his lectures. His midterms were confusing and the curve was poor. By far one of the worst professors imaginable, try taking someone else.
Joseph is probably the most understanding of the Chem Professors. While other professors were sometimes condescending or flat-out mean, he was more encouraging to students. Most important thing is to do the book problems and Aleksit really helps for midterms. Don't let the midterms lull you into a false sense of securitystudy up for the final.
Joseph is a great professor. Hes very patient and stays over office hours until every single question is answered. Going to office hours helps so much and doing book problems!!! everyones complaining saying the final was hard (it was) but i dont think it should completely discredit him.
The final was so out of pocket, nothing could have prepared me for it. I would have gotten the same score if I took it on the first day of class. I studied all week for the final and did horribly. None of the practice tests or book problems helped on the exam. Our other 3 midterms were bad as well, but nothing could have prepared for the final.
this class was extremely challenging, but exams 1-3 were not impossible if you studied hard. I got an A on the last exam and a 50% on the final. the final literally came out of h e double hockey sticks, nothing could have prepared you. this guy just has a kink for low averages. i did better on the exams than I did in 1a-b but worse overall grade.
Like others have said, I dropped a full letter grade because of the final. The final had questions that combined concepts we had never seen combined before, and doing book problems/practice tests basically did nothing in terms of preparing us well. Kind of ridiculous how the average for the final was in the 50s. I believe this was intentional.
This class was brutal. When you do well on the midterms he gives out the most unfair final I have ever seen to lower the average. His lectures are also just worse than Prices. Take Price if possible.
