His lectures are clear. His tests are extremely difficult though and some of the questions on them aren't covered by him. Amusing at times and seems willing to help.

He is a great lecturer honestly just boring most of the time, but if you actually pay attention he is really helpful. I clicker points are really helpful because they replace a quiz score so make sure to go to class . Course is hard but book problems and all the practice exams are great practice for the actual exams, they're truly helpful

Overall a great professors. Puts you to sleep sometimes because of his boring voice, but if you pay attention he's actually a great lecturer. Answer the sent email questions before lecture because they'll prepare for the lecture material. Also, do all the book problems and past quizzesexams to help you prepare for his quizzes and exams.

Terrible professor- spent majority of lecture time explaining material not tested in midterms and ignored going over material that was on them. He was also quite rude to students who came to his office hours for help.

Two quarters with Joseph and I'd argue that he is the best Gen Chem professor at the school. He speaks very clearly and he knows exactly what he's talking about. For the most part, quizzes/exams are fair. He does include tricky questions on pretty much every test, but it's most likely to emphasize the curve (the best get A's and so on).

Great Professor! He has a good sense of humor and can lecture very well. Final was a little tricky, but study up before hand and you should do fine. Best professor ive had for chem.

This class was pretty difficult compared to Chem 1B. But he's a great teacher, explains everything crystal clear and allows time for questions during lecture. The final was really hard though, beats me how's that I got a good grade on it.

Joseph made the lectures all very clear, but when it came time for midterms and finals, he put on a lot of trick questions that we barely went over. It's kind of like Price's tests except Price curves the tests much more than Joseph does so Joseph is actually much harder to pass

Quizzes were straight forward and so was the first exam.However, the second exam was 70% ochem and quite unfair. The final was ridiculous. He grades on a class curve not an individual one. If you average low scores up until the first midterm-drop because your chances of passing are slim. Not helpful at all. Would refuse to answer challenging Qs.

He is good at explaining the concepts, but he likes to use trick questions on his exam. He always makes his finals especially difficult. Other than that, the class is a breeze

So fun and so nice! Has a great sense of humor, and I feel like I finally understood Chemistry with him. Best Gen Chem professor at UCSB, if you have the chance to take his class, take his!

Great teacher! makes chem interesting. His test quizzes are easy, and the test are more conceptional. Make sure to write down even the random things he says, it will be on the test. final was easiest exam compared to the rest.

He is straightforward, but he based his exams around those of professor Price when I took his class so it was a little more difficult than I expected.

Pretty straight forward, I did not study for final got a B without much effort.

Good lectures(definitely go), midterm 1 was like the practice and midterm 2 was really hard( do the homework problems because they help soooo much). He gives a lot of resources to succeed which I recommend using.

The tests are soo hard (esp final) and way different than the practice tests. The book problems are also super hard and there's like 40 for every chapter. He explains things pretty well in lecture so he's good if you learn like that. He's helpful during office hours. The curve is decent.

Had him for 1A and 1B, but he was definitely better for 1A. His 1B lectures only really scratched the surface so homework and book problems were very difficult. I basically had to learn it all myself. Not a bad teacher, but not great for 1B...definitely do all of the book problems

Joseph is the absolute goat. Chem 1A is very difficult course regardless of the professor, but Joseph has great lectures and the tests are fair. Read the textbook if you have the time, but MAKE time for the book problems. Treat them as if they are not optional.

Joseph was a great professor who wants his students to do well by giving lots of resources. Do the book problems and you will do fine.

Workload for this class is insane but if you have done and understand all the book problems (about 40 per chapter) you will do well on the test. Professor explains concepts well so definitely recommend going to his lectures and talk to him when you don't understand. A doable class overall but be prepared for the amount of work you have to put in.

He spends about 15 minutes of every lecture recapping material we've already learned, when we could be learning new content. His tests are also extremely hard, and you have to do a ton of book problems in addition to ALEKs and practice tests to do well. What he goes over in lecture is too basic, and you have to do the learning on your own.

The midterms and final were very hard, but Professor Joseph's lectures were clear and useful. Also, your final grade is curved. Do the book problems and ask questions during office hours.

The best professor for gen chem. Tests are challenging but all the material can be studied from previous and practice tests. Do the homework to understand the material not to study.
