kind of a weird person. i was expecting a full 10 week metaphysics class but got 8 weeks of metaphysics at which point the class devolved into a gender theory class that was completely unrelated to metaphysics. the saving grace of the class was the GOAT TA Wade Fu

His only flaw is that he is way too forgiving in terms of grading. Just give her the D!

Yes, Falvey does lecture in a stream of consciousness but it is structured and intelligible. If you go to class and do the readings, like for most classes, you'll be fine. He doesn't like to post the powerpoints on his website because he wants students to come to lecture. And his lectures are informative and easy to understand. I loved this class!

Sure he knows what he's talking about but has no idea how to convey it to students. He rambles on and on and goes in circles and gets us nowhere. I couldn't write a paragraph on what I learned from this class.

Lectures very aggressively. Philosophers like him spend their careers coming up with theories and get very worked up when students say anything that gets in the way of that. He yelled in class like 3 times. Very unpleasant, avoid. Material is straightforward if you simply follow him exactly. But if you want something enriching, stay far away.

Hard class, especially if you're new to Phil or not a Phil major, but Prof. Falvey is very engaging and does a great job of clarifying the material, which would be incomprehensible otherwise. OT, his lecture notes are so good, I've since emulated his style for all my other classes. I'd recommend this course to those with good grounding in Phil.

Falvey is an awesome professor - one of the best I've encountered so far at UCSB. I attended lecture regularly, did the readings, went to section and got an A in the class. It baffles me how others didn't...Falvey explained everything clearly and lecture topics were always interesting.

metaphysics is a hard topic to comprehend. the reading is explained very well by him, although he loves to go off on tangents. its imperative to take notes, read, and go to class to have any grasp on what is going on. test are pretty straight forward. class is Ok, TA's make the grading harder.

Some stuff is very interesting, however it is imperative to go to class and take notes every day in order to know what is going on.

Maybe I just had a bad experience but this was the worst class I have ever taken. I am a philosophy major and I hate this class. It was so ridiculously boring I couldn't believe it. We talked for a month about what it meant for an object to be red. Seriously, who the **** cares. Not to mention it was hard as hell. The curve made a B- a 60%.

Falvey rocks, he's super enthusiastic about the material and really easy to talk to outside of class. Metaphysics isn't a subject you can just hang out in and expect to know what the hell is going on, especially if you aren't interested.

He knows what he's talking about. He does a good job of clarifying the abstract subject of philospohy. The T.A.'s do all the grading and mine was a total dumb-"donkey".

this guy breaks into tangents, gets really boring and is weird. his lectures were hard to understand. he's a pretty off the wall kinda guy, and i bet he's pretty cool. he dresses nice, but his lectures bored me and he was kinda hard to follow.

I still don't have my grade. I'm upset because this is literally the last PHIL course I needed to take for my major. I wanted to declare early and nowwwww idk I have a NG now. The Prof was genuinely unprepared most of the time. Pretty sure half the class dropped. The class was repetitive, would have been better with a diff Prof.

Lectures are not helpful, and the notes given along with the reading are disorganized. The course depends heavily on self-study, but the essays are fine as long as one finishes the readings. The most annoying part is that grades are released after the registered ddl without any announcement and with no clear score displayed for one essay and final.

The TA was a logician who graded papers as if there was a numerical scale you could use to evaluate philosophical understanding. Miss one minor concept, and boom, it goes from A to C. Lectures were so removed from the readings that they felt like separate ideas despite being about the reading. Also missed the grade deadline?? All-around messy class

Sent us an email that was very unprofessional towards T.A. because he gave us an "unauthorized extension," implied that he lied about it, and let us know there would be no further extensions in the course, then gave an extension on the next paper. Has now used an unauthorized extension herself in terms of submitting our grades after the deadline.

Not only is this prof easily the worst lecturer I've ever had, but he is also extremely rude and degrading. Our TA screwed up and he sent out a very passive aggressive and unprofessional email to our class singling him out. The TA may have been at fault, but he's trying his best and cares about the students. He did not deserve that humilitation.

Unprofessional. Sent mass email about a mistake our TA made and was very rude about it, singling him out. Our TA plays a critical role in the course and should be shown more respect. Singling him out was unprofessional, and if there is something behind the scenes going on between the two she should consult w/ him or UCSB admin.

His lectures are all over the place, he spends very little time on important topics and then spends too much time on other things. He's really vague on assignments, so you'll rely on your TA for most of that. He doesn't take kindly to questions and refuses to accept viewpoints other than his own. He clearly knows philosophy but sucks as a teacher.

honestly worst lecturer ever. He goes in circles even if you like the topic you can't understand anything he is saying. His voice in lecture isn't clear, and his lectures are extremely hard to follow and very frustrating. If you take this class you have to self study to pass. Extremely difficult because lectures don't help at all.
