Professor Zheng is a great professor whose lectures are easy to follow. You have to listen to the lectures to do well in this class. The reading for section was essential. I particularly liked the debate. The discussion became better and more lively when the professor visited sections. I highly recommend 80!
A very good class. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned Chinese history in an unbiased and comprehensive way. Readings are well-selected and interesting. This class gave me the much-needed break from my STEM classes last quarter. Professor Zheng is a real gem.
Professor Zheng is super nice and kind, super amiable. Her lectures are slide based with some comments along. With an interest in the course I do not feel the lectures are boring. Readings are crucial for sections. The readings are not overwhelming compare to some other humanities courses. There are two papers, weekly forum posts, and no exam.
Enjoying this class now! Lectures are crystal clear and interesting. Well-organized weekly homework. Professor is kind and genuinely cares about students. She provided us a study guide and will hold a review section before the final!
Professor Zheng is truly amazing. This class opens my eyes on so many different disciplines and I am also learning a great deal about research. She is extremely caring and definitely wants you to succeed. Papers are graded by TAs. There is a clear grading standard set up by the professor and the professor sent us multiple emails about it.
Instruction on essays is not clear, with no grading rubric.
She is really nice and understanding if you go to office hours, really knowledgeable and passionate. There's a ton of reading though
Professor reads off slides, literally every single word. Her lectures are extremely dry and boring. She expects you to read almost 150-200 pages per week on top of weekly responses, weekly forum discussions, and weekly graded notes. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE. Midterm 30%, Section 35%, Final 35%. Don't do it
I was so nervous to take this course bc I heard that Zheng is difficult, but it wasn't too bad in the end. Zheng is really passionate about the material and wants you to succeed. Do the readings (don't focus on the minutia) and go to class. A few pop quizzes. Exams and projects weren't as difficult as I anticipated. Still, not an easy class.
Zheng is super passionate about the course material, and I learned way more than I did in all the other GEs I've taken put together. That said, it was an extremely difficult and work intensive class, so only take it if you actually care about learning history. Lots of reading. Tests focus on analysis, not just regurgitation of material.
She is definitely the greatest professor and she is always very helpful, passionate about the class and willing to answer your questions. I recommend all the people who want to get REAL knowledge take courses with her. Not easy, but do the readings, go to lecture, discuss with her, you will get much more than just an A.
Professor Zheng was great. The material for the class was really interesting and she presented it well. She seems a little strict at times but she's super passionate about Chinese history and clearly loves to help out her students. Definitely feel like I took a lot away from the course.
Although her teaching takes a little getting used to,once I was able to keep up with her lecture pace she was a very comprehensive teacher. Attend all the lectures and do all the reading you'll walk away from the class with a great understanding of China. She also is incredibly approachable and will answer any questions if you take the time to ask.
I have to say that I love this class. As a Math major, I took this class for GE and did not expect much at the beginning. But I ended up loving it and I looked forward to her lecture every single week. Take 185B with Zheng, you won't be disappointed!
Had two classes with Prof Zheng. She's a great professor in modern Chinese history. She is very passionate about the subject and she knows a lot. Always helpful during office hour and is willing to answer your questions. You'll learn a lot from her about modern China and historical research. Readings are interesting and not very difficult to read.
I really like her as a professor and want to take all her classes after 4B! She respects students' opinions, always tries to interact with her students, and most importantly, she wants you to learn. I highly enjoyed 4B with Zheng.
I learned SO MUCH from her in this class. Her lectures were interesting, clear, informative, and always in-depth. She is also extremely helpful during office hours. I wish I had gone to her office hours more often!
2 reading response,1 midterm paper, 1 final paper, 1 final exam. lots of reading. Hard final, lots of materials need to memorize. Her lecture is like a history class, don`t take it.
Had three quarters with her and loved every bit of it. Very passionate about her subject and always willing to help. As long as you keep up on the readings-- which there is quite a bit of-- an A shouldn't be too difficult to earn.
Fantastic professor who is extremely passionate about her topic. The class really isnt too hard if you pay attention, and you really learn a lot. Plus shes SUPER cute ^^
Very interesting class! The prof knows a lot, and really cares for her students. You have to work hard for a good grade though--but that's good, because I am learning so much from her!
