Excellent! Her lectures were so well organised and clear. The subject matter gets a little tedious when it all focuses on religion, but that isn't her fault. She's very helpful. Go to her office hours, she seems interested in getting to know her students. I love this class!

When I came into UCSB, I was a Biology major. After taking this class...I have dropped all of my chemistry, biology, physics, and math....and have become a history major. She is by far the most helpful professor on campus.

Professor Bernstein is awesome! Good use of slides and music to complement reading assignments. Pretty interesting speaker most of the time (even with somewhat mundane subject matter).

Professor Bernstein is one of my favorite professors. She assigns a lot of readings, but taking 4b with her is worth it. You have to do the readings and go to class to get a good grade on the tests. The lectures are usually pretty entertaining. I plan to take more of her classes in the future.

ACTUALLY HIST 121R (no option)- hard class, grades assignments tough, gives great feedback, expects lots of participation and groupwork, I spent more hours than I can even estimate on my paper, in the end she graded our final papers exceptionally nicely

Great lecturer and is very concise. Even though attendance is not mandatory, it is crucial to show up to class so you have notes for the three essays you will have to write. If you email her at an appropriate time, she will grant you an extension on an essay. A fair grader but you must put a decent amount of time towards this class.

Professor Bernstein appears to be kind at first, but once you visit her during office hours, you realize she is not. Upon going to office hours, she was quite rude to me when I simply asked about what I missed when I was sick UPON HER REQUEST. Most discouraging professor I have ever had, made me feel like a horrible student. Grades insanely hard.

She is nice and good at explaining things, but she grades pretty hard. Although, you can get extra credit through doing extra papers (which you will most likely have to do). I am usually an A student on essays and other wiring assignments so I was taken a step back. Lectures are not too interesting, and would have to force myself to go.

Have taken several classes by her. Super nice and patient and always accessible any time you have questions. Clear instruction and organization. For upper-division classes, there is a short paper 3-5 pages due every week, but you only need to do 3 or 4 of them, and any extra would add to your total grade. Exams need good notes and reading.

Lectures are interesting, though I would bring some coffee to stay alert. There are six opportunity to write three required papers. And the other three can be taken as extra credit. If you meet her during office hours she will work with you! Great professor.

Nice professor who is helpful, but class is a drag. The papers are somewhat hard, and the tests while they seem easy, are graded a little too harsh. If you enjoy the era (France 1515-1715) you might like it, but I personally wasn't a fan. Regardless, ask her questions in office hrs, she knows her stuff well.

The lectures are fascinating. She can be a bit dull at times but tries her best to make the class interesting. There are 6 essays (3 required, 3 extra credit). She provides a lot of opportunities for extra credit and she's a really nice professor. It's a lot of reading but you can get by if you don't read everything.

Bernstein was very passionate about French History and spoke with so much detail. I truly enjoyed her lecture, she made sure everyone understood before she moved on. She grades papers really tough but is available for office hours to help you improve.

Enthusiastic in lectures, especially as the course covered her specialty. Few graded assignments and mandatory lecture. Lectured off slide too.

Good professor overall. This class is on her specialty so she's passionate about it and lectures are pretty interesting and informative. Go to lectures for the big picture and context, do readings for use in papers and some exam questions are on the readings.

Awesome professor. She actually cares about her students and puts effort into know all the students. Very clear lectures and the test are very straight forward. There is a lot of reading, but she selects very interesting works that are not difficult to read at all. I look forward to taking more classes by her!

Definitely one of the best professors I have had so far. Very sweet lady, puts a lot of care in knowing her students. Lecture is not required but if you dont go you are at a serious disadvantage. There is a lot of reading but the reading isnt exceptionally difficult. A fair grader, and a little on a easy side. Highly recommended.

She's ok. Efficient, fairly typical professor; makes the subject understandable and interesting.

Tries very hard to know each and everyone in the class. Kinda nerdy but very sweet. Readings were kind of confusing but lectures were interesting. Two papers, take home midterm all of which rely on good knowledge of the readings. She can tell if you are BSing the papers so know your stuff when you type. She is very sweet and easy to talk to though

Very clear lectures, a lot of readings though. The assigned books aren't too bad, neither are the two paper assignments. She's very helpful. The tests are somewhat difficult, especially the IDs. She gives you five potential essays to study then puts two or three of them on the test. Would suggest her to anyone, great class.

She uses visual aids to help make the lectures entertaining. I would recommend this class if you are interested in Medieval/ Renaissance studies. Readings are relivant and interesting. A little harder than if you are looking for an easy "A." She starts lectures on time, be there a few minutes early

Great! Very committed to presenting the material in an understandable way so as to gain our interest. Very helpful with the papers, and any questions about the class. Frequently extends office hrs. Even postphoned the due date of one of our papers. Tests sorta hard.Interesting stuff. loves teaching
