This is the worse course I have taken at UCSB. They have subpar lectures, films that you can only see at lecture (you must remember all of it for the midterm including quotes), and they final research paper is ridiculous (Graduate level research). In this course they are absolutely the hardest graders that I have dealt with. Take any other course!
Just do not take her classes. So difficult with extremely high expectations for undergrad. Made the mistake of taking her twice. Tests are 60-80% of grade, writing essays in class. Expected a 20 page paper with 20 references on top of tests and reflections. Just dont
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! SHE IS SO NOT HELPFUL AT ALL AND MAKES IT SO DIFFICULT TO SUCCEED IN THE CLASS. THE EXAMS ARE THREE ESSAYS IN THREE HOURS IN PERSON. THE FINAL PAPER IS 2O PAGES MIN AND 20 SOURCES. DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE!!! AND SHE GIVES NO BREAK IN THE LECTURE.
The class has so much potential but she does a horrible job at teaching the material. She expects so much from students but wont even show up to class on time. Doesn't take feedback well and is a very tough luck professor. You will need to try really hard in the class and basically teach yourself. The only good thing about this course was the TA
Just don't.
Professor Twine sucks. Her class is the most disorganized bs I have ever had to put up with. She doesn't give clear rubrics but still expects an insane amount of specifics. The reading load is absolutely ridiculous and she doesn't talk about any assignments in class. Not accessible AT ALL. Save yourself and DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!
This professor is unorganized. She did not show up at least 3-4 times throughout the quarter. She will blame the TA for being not on top of the grading, but the professor is not up to date with her work. Highly advise not to take her class.
Great Teacher, even if you dont like the material, she will be accommodating and make sure you learn from her course
I was pretty interested in this class going in, unfortunately many aspects of the body were overlooked. Still, the subject matter was interesting. The study guides for the exams were given late and they were graded on a rubric that was unclear at first. I feel the class could have been structured to include more subject matter in men as well.
The course was very interesting and informative. I got an A in the course but I still have problems with how the grading scale and the manner in which the professor changed requirements and handled conflicts with students badly. Study guides were given late when promised earlier, guidelines were not clear. Granted this quarter was a test run.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor! She was so nice and loved this course! I learned so much and wish I had the time to switch my major over to SOC just to be able to take more of her classes! Only downfall was mandatory attendance, but if you let her know, she will excuse the absences. Great person, great teacher! Take her!
The content of this course was extremely interesting and thought-provoking. This is a subject everyone should educate themselves on! The downsides include a lot of work, unreasonable essay grading scales, and the professor is unclear/gives you the wrong information about requirements and communicates badly with the TA.
I was afraid to take a class w/her, but I'm so glad I did! She is the most down to earth, genuinely sweet, passionate Prof! I LOVED this class, it was interesting, and the work expected was fair. You read a book a week & write abt it, easily done! I learned so much about the body and myself. Take a course with her, you be happy you did! Glad I did!
This class was fairly easy. Professor Twine is very thorough and extremely helpful. Tests weren't hard at all because she gives you the study guide a week before. The only thing that I didn't like about the course was all of the reading. You have to read a book a week which can be overwhelming at times. Overall great course!
Be very, very careful with this professor. Graduate students: she will steal your ideas and pass them off as her own. Look at the review on here from 2004. Undergrads: she will constantly change her expectations and then blame you for not meeting them. Unpredictable and deceptive. She no longer cares about teaching and is out of touch. Avoid.
I'm really glad I took this class last spring. The lectures and reading material was really inspirational and I always felt that each class I was walking away with something new. You can tell the professor is an expert in her field and enjoys teaching. I'm not sure where these other ratings are from, she's one of the best teachers I've ever had.
So much reading and writing with unrealistic/unreasonable expectations. This final was the longest paper I have ever been assigned. The concept of this class sounds so cool but the way it is "taught" and a lot of the material given is dreadful.
Unclear grading and really bad at responding to students. Lectures do not include course content, used to talk about how ungreatful the students are and lazy. Interesting course but will not give Twine credit for what was learned. Lots of readings/documentaries she uses rather than teaching us anything. Tests include 3 timed essays over 1200 words.
You're reading all the reviews and wondering, hm should I take her? TL:DR no. Honestly the worst professor I've ever taken at UCSB. She is not accommodating at all and gives her students a tough time about time management yet she always uploaded lectures late and the dates on her syllabus were wrong. if u can DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
No doubt the worst teacher and worst class I have ever taken in my life. Do yourself a favor and never take one of her classes. Extremely tough grader who does not give any feedback. Lectures are extremely boring and filled with her ridiculously biased opinions. Don't make the same mistake I did and take this class.
The least understanding professor I have ever had in my life. Twine kept on changing the rubrics or due dates for assignments, giving us extremely short notice, and not being at all accommodating. She expects students to do everything perfectly and to miraculously understand what she's thinking, but is inconsistent herself. Don't take her classes.
Quite possibly the WORST professor I have had in college. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I saw the reviews beforehand but decided to give it a try because it worked with my schedule. Huge mistake. Watched films, pretty much no lecture, learned nothing, so disorganized, waste of time. It makes me upset that she is even a professor at this university.
To start off, DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES!! I'm taking two of her classes at the same time and it was THE worst mistake of my life. You basically have to read 8 books, 2 midterms, final presentation/20 page paper for this class (imagine this, but times two). Disorganized, inconsiderate, can't get a hold of her. Just don't take it, listen to me
does not lecture, we simply watch films and then discuss them for 15 minutes each class. Professor Twine is honestly a very intellectual person and I have learned a lot from her class but she assigns way too much work. 8 texts, 2 midterms, and a 24 page paper/presentation. The content is so interesting but she has no consideration for her students.
