Funny guy and inspiring to students that as long as you show up and do the work given you'll be fine. Do his practice tests and there's no surprises on exams
I have always had trouble with physics, but Freund made it easier to grasp which was enough for me to pass. literally do all the recommended problems and the practice exams, and you'll do fine because his midterms/final are literally the same. I caught on too late plus I just suck at physics in general, which is why I barely passed, but it's doable
I think that he is very fun and entertaining with his lectures but it can be a bit hard to grasp the concepts. At least he posts lecture videos so you can stay on top of everything. Make sure to do all his practice problems as he copies them exactly on his tests. Main downside is that tests make up 84% of your grade so be careful with them.
I enjoyed his lecture humor and demos a lot. Most of his teaching is completing examples in class. Your overall grade will be determined mainly by tests, and his practice problems are very similar to quizzes and exams, so do them. I wish there were solutions to the practice problems, but repeating all practice problems multiple times helped.
Freund is one of the most caring professors I've had. I ended up having to retake 6A and he was with me every step of the way. He was helpful, kind, and made himself accessible for whatever the students needed. His lectures are a little scattered, but I highly recommend him for the physics series! Such a sweet man and a good professors overall.
great professor. his lectures are a little disorganized, but his personality makes time fly! I thoroughly enjoyed his class and his exams are carbon copies of his practice exams!
Please take any professor over Geller. He provides no practices for the midterms or final, so you have no clue what you are getting into. Additionally, he assigns TONS of homework that benefits in no way, just soley busy work. Lectures are ok, however, he does not provide any practice for the extremely difficult exams.
He explains everything clearly and provides plenty of examples, so go to lecture!!! The tests are not super easy but fair, just do practice problems. The main con is that a few of the homework assignments were unreasonably long and there's a lot of them. Overall a good teacher who is passionate about the subject.
He is not as bad as people say. He really likes physics, and he loves explaining physics. If you do the homework you will get a B or A. Some weird quirks (do not email q's abt exams!!!!!) but you can tell he is a nice guy at heart. People pass off their lack of studying the material he provides as him teaching badly - physics just requires practice
He's a nice guy and his lectures are helpful, if a bit slow. There's lots of homework yes but most of it is helpful, and I found that if I was able to do the homework problems confidently, I'd do fine on the tests. His grading scale is really nice-- homework counts for a lot! I'd still recommend CLAS tho or relying on friends if you can.
Get ready to spend hours on homework that won't help you with the exams. With previous physics experience, the class will be a breeze, but the class is taught very poorly. He's nice and tries to make lectures fun, but honestly, the class is a major pain.Thankful for his grading scale though! Exams are multiple-choice and no partial credit is given.
I took Geller last quarter and I was essentially teaching myself the entire class. His lectures are not near enough of a help to get through the insane amount of homework he assigns so you have to cover most of the class's info on your own time. He makes the class more confusing than it needed to be because of his unorganized lecture style.
You can tell that Geller really tries to help his students understand physics in lectures. That being said, the resources he provides outside of class are not enough. Sign up for CLAS to get extra practice problems and do the Achieve since it's worth a lot. Our class did so bad that he made a 75% on the final a 100%, so there's hope for you.
This guy loves achieve, sometimes assignments almost every day of the week. Basically taught myself through the pre-lecture assignments.
He's the worst
Great guy. Made physics better than I thought it would be. Do your quizzes and practice problems and you are set.
honestly really funny and amazing teacher
Geller's lecture style manages to make concepts that are easy to understand in pre-lecture assignments much harder to grasp during lectures. From my experience, if you ask for help after class he's going to respond as if it's insane you aren't grasping the subject. You're essentially teaching yourself physics which is already hard enough as it is.
He's very funny and great to ask for help from :) Apart from Phys 6A, all the Phys 6B & 6C notes and lectures are posted online, allowing you to learn at your own pace. I found it easier to watch these 5-20 min videos than to attend lecture, since he goes on tangents and does too many examples. As long as you grind practice exams, you'll do great!
Take the PHYS6 series with Freund! He makes it very clear that in order to do well you need to understand his quizzes and practice exams; if you do these problems repeatedly with a general understanding, you are literally guaranteed at least B+. He's really nice and cares about his students as well. Definitely take over Geller!
I adore Geller! there are a lot of topics to cover but he tries to trim down as much material as he can. The final is a heavy portion of the grade and hard. But the midterms are usually easier as he gives practice midterms. Homework problems don't help/aren't on exams but saves your grade as its are worth as much as the final.
He's a funny guy and really cares about his students. Don't be afraid to approach him. Office hours rlly helped me understand the topics and took my grade from a B in 6A to an A in 6B. Lectures are hard to follow sometimes but he has to simplify tough concepts so it's understandable. Overall great prof! Have to put in some effort for an A though.
Very enjoyable experience, one of my favorite professors at UCSB. Funny lectures, sometimes goes on tangents and falls behind, but doesn't put it at the expense of students. You're tested on what he tells you in lecture. Nothing else. Homework is nothing like exams, practice exams are carbon-copies of the tests. Go to office hours if you're stuck!
The physics is tough, but Geller shows true interest in his field is fair with the curve. I personally thought the tests were hard but the online Achieve homework is CLUTCH when it comes to grading. It is a good proportion of our total grade and makes up for the -in my opinion- hard tests. Only issue is that lectures are broad compared to Hw.
