T Barr has to be one the cutest, funniest, and most caring professors I have had at UCSB. Even though I have no interest in philosophy whatsoever, Barrett made it fun and interesting. Homework more than 50%, midterm/final almost equally the other weight. Study guides given for midterm and final super helpful. TAs very helpful. Easiest GE by far
Gave everyone full credit for the finals 10/10
I don't have enough good words to say about him. Easily the most charismatic, funniest, coolest, and overall best professor I've had here. The class was extremely low maintenance, the TAs were extremely helpful, and the lectures were always a blast to attend even though they were not at all mandatory. I cannot recommend enough!
He is one of the most inspiring, caring, and responsible professors I've met so far. He is very organized and knowledgeable in his teaching. I learned much more than the course materials from him since he always encourages his students to try. Take his class and you won't regret meeting such an amazing professor and person!
Thomas Barrett is genuinely one of the best professors. He love the subject and you can see it in the way he lectures. The lectures are not attendance mandatory but they're a blast to attend. There was HW due every week on Friday. Not difficult but still challenges you to think and apply the material. Overall kind and compassionate guy.
Thomas is so funny and helpful and the grading system and tests are VERY generous. If you try, you will do well.
A king among men.
Professor Barrett's PHIL 124 was honestly one of those classes I would go out of my way to make sure I wouldn't miss because I was so invested in Thomas' lectures. Not only does he make the material extremely fascinating and easily digestible for students, he is also HILARIOUS. The funny stories he'd tell us in class would genuinely make my day.
Best person ever
I took 100F this past fall '23 qtr and it was great! Thomas is my favorite professor at ucsb fs. Attendance wasn't mandatory but it was offered as extra credit at the end of the quarter. The grade was based on 3 "medium" papers, 2 "short" papers, and the extra credit attendance quizzes.
Thomas is such a great guy! I took his 100F class in Fall 2022 and I LOVED it, made me look forward to morning classes even when I was not a morning person. Thomas really does care for his students and is very easy to talk to! Class material was very easy to understand with him around!
goated
As a STEM major, I found the first 2/3 of the class esoteric af & impractical. However, after living in OHs & asking for the core ideas to be explained like I'm five years old, I got a lot out of 100F! Overall: Did 1/10 readings, cried a little, religiously went to OHs (Thomas is wonderful), and wrote some of the best papers of my life
A perfect professor! As a freshman, I just felt a little bit uncertain about my college academics especially considering the fact that I have never taken any PHIL classes before. But his detailed and patented interpretation really made the hard stuff easy and fascinating. He's also quite accessible outside class. Everything are just perfect!
I was always excited to go to class knowing that Thomas would have a funny anecdote or two ready for the class. The reading was very manageable, and the lectures engaging. He truly seems to care about his students and their learning. He asks for students to think for their essays, but ensures everyone has the proper foundation for them to thrive.
Thomas is my favorite professor at UCSB. He grades papers toughly (a primary component of your grade) but his lectures are the best, bar none. In a university of boring and unrelatable lecturers his exuberance and down-to-earthness are heaven sent.
Tells very juicy stories about ancient philosophers. Super cool guy, very interesting lectures and topics, well organized slides, absolutely cannot go wrong.
I mean, he's not a bad guy, but he's super corny. He'll tell the driest stories about some ancient philosopher or about his personal life when literally no one asked. Lectures drag on for hours and the material is unbearable to study.
prof barrett is amazing and i couldn't recommend him more! he's super down-to-earth and really makes an effort to connect with his students which was incredibly nice to see as i took this course online in winter 2021. his lectures are very clear and easy to follow! absolutely take a class with him if you can!
Just great overall. Explains everything well. Interesting lecturing. Very friendly and inspiring. The material is not hard as long as you do the reading and attend the lectures.
Although the subject matter of this class was not inherently interesting or easy, the lectures were never boring and he always explained the concepts clearly. The grade was made up of 5 papers (2 short, 3 medium) that were difficult at times, but were explained well by him and the TAs and were graded fairly. Take this prof if you get the chance!!
All readings are posted online and hes very approachable when you have questions. Thomas is easily my favorite professor at UCSB. I went to office hours to talk about game of thrones and rick and morty rather than the material. If you have the chance, take a class when he doesnt have a TA because he grades the papers himself and is generous.
He is indeed the most interesting professors i had class with. There is not much reading. He is good at explaining Philosophical ideas intuitively, everyone likes him, but he could do even better if: 1: make lectures more compact and concentrate (less videos and demo 2: give more insights of different philosopher 3: not playing inproper music
Best professor I've ever had. His lectures are super interesting and engaging, he is super funny and relatable and genuine. He's also super accessible outside of class and always willing to help. Highly recommend.
