she is extremely unorganized in the way she teaches, her lectures could be a lot more straightforward. this class was very frustrating for me even though i did well because i had to spend a lot of time figuring things out on my own. i would not recommend taking her classes, probably one of my least favorite bio classes
Class was very interesting, but the entire grade was from a short midterm and final, meaning each question (even multiple choice ones) were worth around 1.5% of your class grade which is ridiculous. Reuses questions so if you're in greek life and have access to test banks then congrats you have an advantage over everybody in the class.
The entire class is based on a 33/66 structure with 2 midterms and a final. The 2nd midterm is where it gets everyone, the curve is to a C not a B or B-; you have been warned; which means many students got a C in the class, avoid this class if you can or wait for a different instructor other than Dr. Hayes.
Avoid this class if you can, Idk why other people before say its easy; probably before he rewrote his entire test banks to confusing MC and written w/ explanations. Sure wish I didn't listen to you fools on here! It just dropped me from a 3.7 upper div GPA to a 3.0 now...
Montell is a genius, extremely helpful, and a great lecturer. The tests are pretty hard, and test your critical thinking skills, and completely de emphasize memorization (you get a cheat sheet of notes). My advice would be to re-listen to the lectures, and take notes ON EVERYTHING she says, and try to understand it conceptually vs. memorize.
This was an amazing class. I learned an incredible amount, and Prof Montell was very fair and helpful. The tests definitely weren't easy, but if you use all of the resources she provides, it is easy to do well.
I didn't really understand what he was teaching me & at time I don't know if he did either. This class is pretty hard & I didn't really enjoy it, it's a lot of work for a class that is only three units.
If you put in the work you'll do well. She speaks quickly but she records the lecture, so listen to them before the midterm. The class is not just about memorizing, it's about really understanding the material. She's pretty helpful in office hours. Textbook is pretty helpful too.
Overall, I think the organization of her lecture material was optimal for learning. She is extremely helpful in office hours and she is personable, so make sure you get to know her. The class isn't an easy A, but she isn't trying to trick you on test, so study diligently and don't fall behind and you'll be great. I learned so much in her class!
This was her first quarter teaching an undergrad and she got the hang of it by the end. The first midterm was difficult because we did not know what to expect. By the end of the class she had lecture recordings, study guides, and practice questions which were helpful. She is very approachable in office hours and she cares about students doing well.
Awesome prof. The course has a TON of information you need to know but Hayes does a good job teaching. He copies questions from old tests and the practice questions he gives out. Super funny, and a bit of a smart alec, but great for learning microbio. Go to his office hours
Definitely interested in what he is teaching. Sometimes he can get a little boring to listen to but he does convey the information well. Easy midterm and final.
Most intelligent Professor I have taken at UCSB. Very knowledgable and enjoyed the humor brought to the classroom. Definitely recommend this course!
He makes unrelated remarks in class and as not helpful during office hours.
He makes inane comments about literature/the literary nature of a few certain scientists which are unfounded, and dominates the class (it's co-taught). Also, there were many questions on the midterm which were never covered and denied it. Not a hard class, but not worth the time.
there is alot of information that you need to know, but it isnt really hard if you can keep up with the studying. he does reuse all of his exams, so if you can get ahold of them, you are pretty much set. he is funny, and easy to approach. seriously tho, try to get his old exams
his tests are not really hard if you know the material. the only thing that makes this class hard is that there is a LOT of info, and it's impossible to know all of it, so it's hard to know what you will be tested on. you NEED to go to class! write things down, tests on stuff he says in lec.
class is very worth taking.
Challenging but great class. Professor was great and made the class extremely interesting.
Definitely recommend this class! Challenging but enjoyable.
Really helpful to premed students, was an ex-medschool student and will give lots of advice. Approachable. Not an easy class but a good class where you can apply what you learn to the mcats.
s'06 was his first time teaching 108c. he started off timid, but by the end was cracking jokes and making snide comments left and right. made for an entertaining class. he holds review sessions himself, those were fun. His m/c are tricky, tests are tricky. but he's fair in that he only tests what he teaches in class. so take good notes.
Great Professor! I learned a lot and found the techniques that Professor Kosik used in class to be helpful and thought provoking. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who has a true desire to really learn about Biology. Professor Kosik really seems to know his stuff, and presents his knowledge very well to the class.
Class started slow, then picked up towards end of quarter. His first time teaching 108c so we needed to cut him some slack. Really emphasized knowing drugs and medical ailments for those interested in medical professions. Midterm/final reviews always good and entertaining thanks to 'Those guys' for their contributions. Recommended!!
